Will Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray Bass Guitar strings work on…?
An Ibanez SRX series bass. And also is it the strings that make the sound different or the type of bass? Thnx Peace
The 2 previous statements are correct but they didn’t answer your 2nd question. The guitar is what makes the difference in sound. But a cheaper way to upgrade your sound would be to upgrade your pickups. I have an Ibanez myself, and I plan on doing the same. Also an amp change could do wonders. If you are playing with an amp that has only one speaker, it needs to be at least 15″, a 12″ won’t cut it. However if you have something like a 4 x 10, you should be good. As far as pickups are concerned, look at DiMarzio or Bartolini.

”Just another one of God’s gifts”: Prince, African-American masculinity, and the sonic legacy of the eighties. $49.99 The popular recording artist Prince is known for his ability to fuse musical styles considered mutually exclusive on the basis of race—funk and new-wave, R&B and hard rock. Prince has also made a name for himself by moving between different identities—sexual savant, devout man of god, androgynous sprite—a strategy that fit the 1980s, an era of shifting identity politics. This dissertation expands on previous scholarly work, which has claimed Prince as a quintessentially “post-modern” figure, by showing how his music manifests a history of the struggle for African-American self-representation. As an artist well versed in American pop history and deeply engaged with the black church, Prince was bringing the liberatory strategies of African-American culture to bear even as he de-constructed gender and sexuality. This dissertation takes a fresh approach to the question of music and identity: by analyzing Prince’s music with an ear for particular genre references, I present a snapshot of racial politics, music, and American society during a time period that few scholars have yet addressed. Musical genre is the discursive arena in which popular musicians navigate identity and history, and in each of my chapters I have focused on how Prince manipulates genre references, taking instrumental idioms as the signifiers of genre and identity. My introduction considers Prince’s use of the guitar, a “white” rock instrument; chapter one deals with keyboard synthesizers, and how Prince blended R&B horn idioms with new-wave music; chapter two discusses the relationship between funk drumming and black identity, exploring Prince’s symphonic transformations of the funk and his ambivalence to hip-hop. Chapter three connects Prince’s vocal styles to gospel music and the cosmology of the black church; and chapter four details how Prince re-integrated horns into his music, engaging with jazz and R&B as a way to reclaim black musical history. ‘89 Live in Japan $9.99 Sometime in 1992/1993 a revamped Quiet Riot featuring vocalist Kevin DuBrow with Bob Rondinelli on drums (around this time Rondinelli had also filled in on an Aerosmith gig one night when Joey Kramer wasn’t available — call him Mr. Fill-In) performed at a little-known club in Billerica, Massachusetts called Mr. Tipps. It is one of those suburban gigs we call “the last rung on the rock & roll ladder” and it’s a pity because Quiet Riot had more than just a clever name, and more than the cachet of being the professional birthplace of guitar wizard Randy Rhodes. To those who don’t know the story, DuBrow faced a mutiny by the band he founded and Pasha Records released an album in 1988 with two different members, titling the disc, interestingly enough, after the first Japanese release by the original group. This DVD, ‘89 Live in Japan, comes from that strange lineup in between and features vocalist Paul Shortino of the group Rough Cutt as well as bassist Sean McNabb and an uncredited Jimmy Waldo — keyboard player from the groups New England and Alcatraz. Why Waldo is treated like a hired hand is one of those unique situations which seemed to develop after Flo & Eddie called Mountain’s organ player Steve Knight “the most useless man in rock & roll.” The statement was far from accurate, of course, but it was humorous and Mott the Hoople and Aerosmith would both push keyboardists to the side and pretty much off-stage after that infamous quip. Though the 1988 self-titled Quiet Riot album faced horrible reviews and little or no commercial acceptance, this DVD is actually quite enjoyable. As a live band, Q.R. had that long-hair-’80s-thing down pat. What replaces original vocalist DuBrow’s personality is a very slick and well-executed heavy metal show. “Stay With Me Tonight” might not be a rock & roll classic, but it comes off well live and along with the nine in-concert tracks there is a bonus of the video shot for “Stay With Me.” This is no mere clone band going t… |

…And Don’t the Kids Just Love It $16.98 The first full album by Television Personalities, recorded after a four-year series of often brilliant D.I.Y. singles recorded under a variety of names, including the O-Level and the Teenage Filmstars, is probably the purest expression of Daniel Treacy’s sweet-and-sour worldview. The songs, performed by Treacy, Ed Ball, and Mark Sheppard, predict both the C-86 aesthetic of simple songs played with a minimum of elaboration but a maximum of enthusiasm and earnestness and the later lo-fi aesthetic. The echoey, hissy production makes the songs sound as if the band were playing at the bottom of an empty swimming pool, recorded by a single microphone located two houses away, yet somehow that adds to the homemade charm of the record. Treacy’s vocals are tremulous and shy, and his lyrics run from the playful “Jackanory Stories” to several rather dark songs that foreshadow the depressive cast of many of his later albums. “Diary of a Young Man,” which consists of several spoken diary entries over a haunting, moody twang-guitar melody, is downright scary in its aura of helplessness and inertia. The mood is lightened a bit by some of the peppier songs, like the smashing “World of Pauline Lewis” and the “David Watts” rewrite “Geoffrey Ingram,” and the re-recorded version of the earlier single “I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives,” complete with deliberately intrusive prerecorded bird sounds, is one of the most charming things Television Personalities ever did. This album must have sounded hopelessly amateurish and cheaply ramshackle at the time of its 1981 release, but in retrospect, it’s clearly a remarkably influential album that holds up extremely well. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi |

1 $14.99 Much of the press heaped upon Simple Kid around the release of his debut 1 recycled the “Dylan of the new generation” clich? , and while that comparison has worked well for Beck, does anyone actually remember other “modern Dylans” like Block or John Oszajca? And truth be told, most of 1 sounds a bit like Beck, but very little like Bob Dylan, so wouldn’t that make Simple Kid a third-generation of Dylan? Either way, it’s no matter because the best moments on 1 are actually where Simple Kid apes a different ’60s figure — Ray Davies — for thrilling tales of mendacity. It’s songs like “The Average Man” and “The Commuter” where Simple Kid establishes his identity as a guitar-based storyteller; one who leans equally on post-alt rock soundscapes as he does on classic Britpop ranging from the Kinks to Blur. He falters when he indulges his sonic experiments, such as in the trippy “Drugs,” or “Love’s an Enigma, which both sound like third-rate Super Furry Animals. It’s the chunky power pop and twee falsetto in songs like “Staring at the Sun that make 1 feel like a celebration of ’90s Britpop, ten years on, only with some modern flourishes sprinkled in. It’s true that the shifting styles make 1 something of a rocky listen — especially when the tempo drags so much in the middle of the album — but the good bits, the truly adventurous bits, are where Simple Kid is content to sit still and write about other people who are also sitting still. ~ Jason Damas, Rovi |

12 Angry Months $12.99 Scott Lucas of Local H is far from the first musician to find inspiration in a bad romantic breakup, and he’s just one of many who has written a whole album about losing someone who was once the girl of his dreams, but the group’s seventh full-length album, 12 Angry Months, is their most ambitious and adventurous work to date, finding new musical avenues to express the many emotions that emerge in the wake of a busted relationship. 12 Angry Months opens with an unusually subdued acoustic guitar and piano prelude before the electric guitars kick in and Lucas and his ex battle over how to divvy up their mutual friends and the CD collection (“Where’s all my Kyuss records? You never liked ‘em until you met me!”), and though Lucas delivers plenty of his trademark meat-and-potatoes hard rock guitar on this album, he also shows a greater willingness to explore other textures. “White Belt Boys” and “Taxi-Cabs” flirt with minor-key Eastern modes (though they seem to be drawn from Led Zeppelin rather than a new interest in world music), “The Summer of Boats” and “Simple Pleas” are rare examples of “power ballads” that sound heartfelt and dramatic rather than maudlin, the sarcastic pop accents lurking below of the surface of “Jesus Christ! Did You See the Size of That Sperm Whale?” add to its bite, and the epic-scaled closer, “Hand to Mouth,” achieves a fitting sonic grandeur. Lyrically, 12 Angry Months runs the emotional gamut of post-breakup resentment, from ranking out on your ex’s new boyfriend (“BMW Man”), wishing misery upon her and her friends (“White Belt Boys”) and bitter resignation that the affair was doomed to failure (“Twenty-Four Hour Breakup Session”) to self-loathing (“Jesus Christ! Did You See…”), foolishly pondering another chance (“Blur”), and clumsily moving on (“Taxi-Cabs”). 12 Angry Months is often funny but just as often cuts deep enough to sting for anyone who has ever has a less-than-graceful breakup (i.e. nearly everyb… |

12 Songs $8.98 One of the year’s most heavily-anticipated new releases, 12 Songs pairs the pop music icon Neil Diamond with legendary producer Rick Rubin. Producing a Neil Diamond album has been a long-time dream for Rubin, whose extraordinary resume spans the history of hip-hop from LL Cool J to Jay Z, the world of hardcore rock from Slayer to System Of A Down, and the pantheon of mythic stars from Tom Petty and Donovan to Mick Jagger and Johnny Cash’s immortal Grammy-winning American Recordings series. Most of the songs were recorded with Neil playing and singing at the same time, said Rick Rubin in a Rolling Stone article (9/22/05) profiling the producer, and it’s a different animal. It’s taking him back to being more of a singer-songwriter. He really blows me away. When it came time to record 12 Songs, Rick Rubin assembled a sympathetic ensemble of musicians to capture the essence of Neil Diamond’s extraordinary new songs, each of them a finely-wrought gem, soul-searching, honest, yearning, and powerful. A core group of musicians made up of Mike Campbell (guitar) and Benmont Tench (piano/organ) from Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers and guitarist Smokey Hormel (Beck, Tom Waits) and other musicians including the renowned Larry Knechtel (piano) and Billy Preston (organ) played on the album. Tracklisting 1. Oh Mary 2. Hell Yeah 3. Captain Of A Shipwreck 4. Evermore 5. Save Me A Saturday Night 6. Delirious Love 7. I’m On To You 8. What’s It Gonna Be 9. Man Of God 10. Create Me 11. 12 Songs $15.98 In the 1990s, producer Rick Rubin (renowned for his work with acts ranging from Run-DMC to Slayer) helped to reinvigorate the career of country legend Johnny Cash by bringing him back to the basics of his sound. On 2005’s 12 SONGS, Rubin facilitates a similar streamlining with pop crooner Neil Diamond, a not entirely surprising move, as Rubin steered Cash toward covering Diamond on AMERICAN III: SOLITARY MAN. The Brooklyn-born performer returns to his singer/songwriter roots, leaving the glitzy bombast of past outings behind, in favor of a warm, organic atmosphere that often highlights Diamond’s own acoustic-guitar playing. This setting allows his emotive voice and distinctive phrasing to carry the tunes, whether he’s pining away on Oh Mary or reveling in unrestrained affirmation on Hell Yeah. Although many of the tunes are strikingly spare, there is room for contributions by stellar backing musicians, including Billy Preston (organ) and Heartbreakers Mike Campbell (guitar) and Benmont Tench (piano and organ). An assured album that features Diamond playing to his strengths, 12 SONGS is a welcome return to form for a beloved American pop artist. |

13 $10.98 Amid all the acclaim that has deservedly seen him canonized as the patron saint of American doom metal, Scott “Wino” Weinrich has arguably never been busier than at the ripe young age of 50 (more like 80 in drug years), which sees him juggling solo albums, recordings with supergroup Shrinebuilder, and even performing reunion shows by ? 80s doom icons Saint Vitus. So the creation of yet another original power trio — this time named Premonition 13 and featuring old personal friend Jim Karow on guitar, Matthew Clark on drums, and no evident bass player — clearly begs two questions: namely, how does Wino find the time? And where does he find the inspiration? Well, in the case of Premonition 13’s debut full-length, 13, the answer to these questions would appear to be a far from romantic “in the rehearsal space” (apologies to anyone who was hoping to hear “at the crossroads”), given the obviously jam-birthed looseness displayed by most of these tracks. Furthermore, apart from a few atypical detours into forceful heavy rock (“Hard to Say,” “Deranged Rock ? n’ Roller,” the Hidden Hand-reminiscent “Clay Pigeons”), 13 is dominated and defined by a series of stoned-out, psychedelic doom jams — the nine-minute introduction of “B.E.A.U.T.Y.,” the cryptic “La Hechicera de la Jeringa,” the dreamy “Peyote Road,” etc. — doused in billowing clouds of guitar psychedelics. As such, Wino’s latest project may find the most favor among fans orphaned by the dearly defunct Spirit Caravan, for obvious reasons. That being said, until further evidence is provided, 13 doesn’t really feel like one of the man’s most inspired or immortality-bound efforts, but rather just another reminder of Wino’s prolific consistency. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi |

16 and Savaged [Bonus Track] $15.98 Silverhead’s second record, 16 and Savaged, finds the unit much tighter, yet like any great rock & roll band, they maintained that all-important swagger. The addition of guitarist Robbie Blunt gives the group an added punch, and he and Rod Davies proved to be one of glam’s best twin-guitar attacks. Vocalist Michael Des Barres steps up as well, and his Steve Marriott-bumping-into-Rod Stewart rasp never sounded better, before or since. The boys come out blazing on the groovy opener, “Hello New York,” nailing the Bolan strut and swiping the “Get It On” licks, while the gleefully sleazy “More Than Your Mouth Can Hold” has a definite Faces vibe, an intro borrowed from “Street Fighting Man,” and all the subtlety of a Gene Simmons lyric. In fact, the near-metal crunch of the album may have been an influence on the still developing Kiss sound. The lights lower for “Only You,” and while Des Barres shines, the song ultimately misses the mark. The newfound intensity of the group is most evident on “Bright Light,” a glam rock boogie monster that chugs along for a few minutes, before bursting at the seams for a photo finish that, paradoxically, sounds very much like a punk Led Zeppelin. The second half of the LP contains some fine and engaging rockers in “Heavy Hammer,” “Cartoon Princess,” and “Rock Out Claudette Rock Out,” but is in desperate need of a ballad to help with the pacing — ideally one on par with Silverhead’s “Wounded Heart” or “In Your Eyes.” Unfortunately, the weaker final numbers are made all the more obvious by this lacking element, keeping the disc a notch below their debut. 16 and Savaged turned out to be their final studio album, and Silverhead have all but been forgotten. Though not without its faults, the album is still one of the most exciting records from the glam period, and it, along with the group itself, should be remembered as one of the era’s finest. ~ Bart Bealmear, Rovi |

1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 1 $9.99 The Velvet Underground were little more than a rumor when Lou Reed left the band in 1970, but by 1974, thanks to Reed’s success as a solo artist, the Velvets had become a bona fide cult item, and that year Mercury Records released a two-record set compiled from tapes from shows in Dallas and San Francisco entitled 1969: Velvet Underground Live. The album featured a generous 104 minutes of music, and when Mercury reissued it on CD in 1988, rather than edit the material or release a two-CD set, they put out the album as two separate discs. While this seemed like a rather curious move, the album’s sequence was such that it divided in half quite cleanly, and while any VU fan will want both volumes, they don’t work half bad as individual albums. 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 1 rocks a bit harder than its counterpart; it opens with a grooving version of “Waiting for the Man,” moves on to a rave-up take of “What Goes On” that features some of Lou Reed’s finest rhythm guitar work, and closes out with passionate renditions of “Rock and Roll” and “Beginning to See the Light.” And where there are a number of ballads on hand (most notably a lovely take of “Lisa Says” and versions of “Sweet Jane” and “New Age” considerably different from those on Loaded), they sound just as committed and compelling as the rockers. While the Doug Yule-era edition of the Velvet Underground often gets short shrift from aficionados, the performances on 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 1 prove this band still had plenty of fire, and was playing at the top of their game. The CD also adds a final bonus track, an unreleased version of “Heroin”; while the same song appears on Vol. 2, this recording is a different (and considerably more aggressive) performance. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

A Friend of a Friend $15.98 Ironically, the most telling line on Dave Rawlings’ first album as a frontman comes from one of the few tracks he didn’t write. On his version of the Bright Eyes song Method Acting, imagine a more direct explanation of A Friend of a Friend’s genesis. Singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer Rawlings has worked with Bright Eyes and Old Crow Medicine Show in the past, and members of both bands return the favor by appearing here, but of course he’s best-known for being Gillian Welch’s musical foil throughout her career. After a decade-and-a-half spent as the shadowy figure in the background, chiming in with those reedy harmonies and concise guitar licks on demand, Rawlings is long overdue for this solo debut. While he has hidden light under a proverbial bushel, he hasn’t been concealing any unexpected predilections — the overall approach here is pretty much in line with that of the albums he’s made with Welch, which makes sense, considering that he was the producer on half of those. The biggest difference is a slightly more expanded sonic palette, a result of Rawlings bringing his aforementioned buddies on board, in addition to Tom Petty’s ivory-tickler Benmont Tench and of course, longtime singing partner Welch. But even though a string section pops up on a couple of tunes, A Friend of a Friend is essentially a low-key, acoustic-based Americana outing that feels more like a 21st century version of the early-? 70s Laurel Canyon cowboy aesthetic than anything else. The old, new, borrowed and blue song selection is balanced to present a quintessential picture of where Rawlings is coming from; he tackles Ryan Adams and Old Crow tunes he co-wrote, covers cohorts Bright Eyes as well as inspirations Neil Young and Jesse Fuller, and rounds things out with a batch of new Rawlings/Welch compositions. And while he doesn’t exactly adopt an in-your-face approach to the leading-man role, preferring to become part of the powerful collective he’s assembled, Rawlings proves himself f… |

A Natural Man $1.87 In this new collection of poetry, National Book Award finalist Gary Soto tackles the shabby reality of the world around him and turns it into vivid poetry. Drawing on the Chicano slang of the barrio, Soto gives authentic voice to portraits of life set mostly in California’s San Joaquin Valley, where he was born and raised. The theme of the poet as troubadour runs throughout the book-there is a wry humor in Soto’s description of the drunken narrator of “The Mariachi Suit,” who, with “spurs jangling music” and a “guitar like a small coffin in my arms,” serenades an audience of cats, “Who yawn, lick the clover pads/Of their salty paws, and prance away.” A delightful poem to Soto’s wife of 23 years (“Meat and Potatoes”) playfully contrasts a miserable bachelor meal with the exotic cooking of the woman next door: “Love was at her table,/A fork going to her mouth and the noodles,/How delicious, easy to swallow.” These new poems will please Soto’s many admirers, and the edgy voice of A Natural Man is sure to convert even more. Author Biography: Gary Soto is one of today’s most celebrated Chicano writers. His New and Selected Poems (1995) was nominated for the National Book Award, and he has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. He divides his time between Berkeley and his hometown of Fresno, California. |

After School Session [Expanded] $9.99 Chuck Berry’s first album boasts a picture of him lifted from his appearance in the 1956-vintage rock & roll movie Rock, Rock, Rock — it’s a daring pose if you look closely, the singer/guitarist/songwriter captured at his most animated, in what was a pretty bold pose for a black artist in an interracial movie, strutting and duck-walking across the screen with his guitar at full…exposure. That said, bold as the movie appearance was and the pose that was reflected in its cover, After School Session came out fairly late, given that his first hit, “Maybellene,” dated from the summer of 1955. This was partly owing to the sheer novelty of rock & roll LPs — during that period, only a relative handful reached the public, and a significant portion of those were the work of Elvis Presley or Bill Haley, whose associations with the gigantic RCA Victor and Decca labels, respectively, put them in virtually a separate universe from everyone else in the field, especially Berry, recording for the tiny independent Chess label. Chess Records hadn’t even issued its first LP until the end of 1956, and that album, the soundtrack LP Rock, Rock, Rock, had included “Maybellene.” After School Session was only the label’s second-ever long-player, and its timing was predicated on the fact that, after “Maybellene,” the rock & roll legend hadn’t charted another major pop hit in almost two years (though he had generated some serious R&B hits, which are included here, among them the blues “Wee Wee Hours” — which was what Berry originally purported to represent as his sound — and the more rhythm-oriented “No Money Down” and “Brown Eyed Handsome Man”). It was the release and hit status of “School Day” in the early spring of 1957 that yielded this album, which is a brilliant compendium of the range, depth, and breadth of Berry’s music across his first two years as a recording artist. The sounds ranged from the pounding, jargon-laden teen-oriented beat of “School Day” through … |

Against the Grain $13.98 After releasing two albums in 1973 and a live, contract-fulfilling disc in 1974, Gallagher returned rested and recharged in 1975 with a new record label, Chrysalis, and a band with almost three years of hard touring under their belts. With its attention to detai, Against the Grain sounds more practiced and intricate than most of Gallagher’s previous studio discs, but still includes some of his most powerful rockers. The supercharged “Souped-Up Ford,” where Rory howls and wails, with his voice and smoking slide, and “All Around Man,” an urgent blues rocker that begins with Gallagher screaming and crying together with just his electric guitar until the band kicks in with a stop-start blues rhythm, are two of the definitive moments. “Bought and Sold” adds congas to the mix to bring a more rootsy and even jazzy feel to Rory’s table. But it’s on the acoustic tracks where the guitarist and his band really lay into the groove. Gallagher’s version of Leadbelly’s “Out On the Western Plain,” with its combination of Indian chords, American Delta folk and cowboy “yippee-ki-yay” chorus is one of the Irishman’s unheralded highlights, and “Cross Me Off Your List” is affecting in its yearning melody, subtle keyboard and minor key. A playful and forceful romp through Sam and Dave’s “I Take What I Want” shows Gallagher’s soul roots. Two bonus tracks from the 2000 reissue and recorded at these sessions are country based jams, but neither is particularly impressive. Not his best album, Against the Grain is still prime period Rory Gallagher. Its well-rounded menu of country, Delta blues, and blues-rock is indicative of his approach; though few of these songs became classics in the guitarist’s extensive catalog, they’re far more mature and eclectic than most blues-rock bands’ best work. ~ Hal Horowitz, Rovi |

Aineen Musta Puhelin (Black Telephone of Matter) $15.99 Best known as one-half of acclaimed techno minimalists Pan Sonic, Mika Vainio also has an impressive r? sum? as a solo artist that stretches back to the early ’90s and his association with influential Finnish imprint S? hk? . Recording primarily under the aliases ? and Philus, and sometimes his birth name (depending on the project), Vainio’s aesthetic mission has been consistently and rigorously defined by an investigation into the materiality of sound. Indeed, just about everything in his catalog evinces a fascination for the physical extremes of frequency range and dynamics, from raw, wrenching bass tones and piercing sine waves to attacking transients and desultory blasts of white noise. Aineen Musta Puhelin (Black Telephone of Matter), Vainio’s fourth album for the Touch label under his name, is similar to past efforts in its ability to wrest dramatic atmospheres from the most errant of sonic gestures. What’s different here, however, is Vainio’s almost complete abandonment of a rhythmic framework to tie those stray elements together. Even as the brittle arctic-industrial grooves of Pan Sonic and ? — reflected in mid-’90s albums like Vakio (1995), Metri (1994), and Olento (1996) — represented the next evolutionary step in techno’s “man-machine” aesthetics, Aineen Musta Puhelin’s ominous electro-acoustic vistas take that idea even further into the realms of the post-human. Largely sticking to a familiar palette of broadband grays and pitch-black silences, along with occasional glints of white-light frequency play, Vainio’s austere approach is loosened a bit on “Swedenborgia” — likely the only track on the album that references an actual instrumental sound. Resembling a musique concr? te-style edit of a doom metal band, Vainio manages to create a remarkably organic, almost improv-like interplay with a few elements (amplified tape saturation, metallic percussion, and a decaying guitar drone) staged through a clever use of basic dynamics processing (volu… |

Air Stereo $14.98 The Damnwells have concocted a sound somewhere between alternative country and alternative rock on Air Stereo, an odd combination of rough and tumble electric guitars and smooth harmony. Perhaps the band’s oddest trademark is its Eagles-style harmony on “Golden Days,” an element that adds a bit of pop sheen to the Damnwells’ sound. The arrangements are fairly straightforward, with guitar, bass, and drums covering the basics while lap steel and piano add a little something extra. Alex Dezen handles the lead vocals, and like a number of his peers, embodies the right mixture of white boy angst and sincerity on songs like “Sell the Lie.” At times, this rustic, anguished approach seems to run against the grain of the happier songs on the album like “I’ve Got You” and “Accidental Man,” and is likewise at odds with the pretty harmony. But the Damnwells, like many other alternative bands, never seem to stay happy for very long. The elliptical “Shiny Bruise” follows a morose tempo that says more than the actual lyrics: this is music to get depressed by. Occasionally, the group’s guitar work — as on “I’ve Got You” — attempts to break out, drawing from classic rock and creating temporary moments of transcendence. But a great deal of Air Stereo, while accomplished, reminds one very much of albums by the Damnwells alternative peers. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Rovi |
