…And Justice for All $40.99 The most immediately noticeable aspect of …And Justice for All isn’t Metallica’s still-growing compositional sophistication or the apocalyptic lyrical portrait of a society in decay. It’s the weird, bone-dry production. The guitars buzz thinly, the drums click more than pound, and Jason Newsted’s bass is nearly inaudible. It’s a shame that the cold, flat sound obscures some of the sonic details, because …And Justice for All is Metallica’s most complex, ambitious work; every song is an expanded suite, with only two of the nine tracks clocking in at under six minutes. It takes a while to sink in, but given time, …And Justice for All reveals some of Metallica’s best material. It also reveals the band’s determination to pull out all the compositional stops, throwing in extra sections, odd-numbered time signatures, and dense webs of guitar arpeggios and harmonized leads. At times, it seems like they’re doing it simply because they can; parts of the album lack direction and probably should have been trimmed for momentum’s sake. Pacing-wise, the album again loosely follows the blueprint of Ride the Lightning, though not as closely as Master of Puppets. This time around, the fourth song — once again a ballad with a thrashy chorus and outro — gave the band one of the unlikeliest Top 40 singles in history; “One” was an instant metal classic, based on Dalton Trumbo’s antiwar novel Johnny Got His Gun and climaxing with a pulverizing machine-gun imitation. As a whole, opinions on …And Justice for All remain somewhat divided: some think it’s a slightly flawed masterpiece and the pinnacle of Metallica’s progressive years; others see it as bloated and overambitious. Either interpretation can be readily supported, but the band had clearly taken this direction as far as it could. All You Need Is Blood $10.99 The world’s favorite impersonators of Metallica impersonating the Beatles are back with their second release All You Need Is Blood. This time they’ve taken “All You Need Is Love” and replaced the lyrics with metal-themed flair to convert lines like “nothing you can see that can’t be shown” to “nothin’ you can smash that can’t be smashed” in a dead-on James Hetfield imitation. The concept gets heavier, as they encapsulate the Fab Four’s messages of world unity by performing the same song in 13 different versions: English, Portuguese, Estonian, French, German, Hungarian, Hebrew, Italian, Mexican Spanish, Dutch, Polish, Russian, and South Korean. In order to embark on this lofty mission, the band enlisted the help of international Beatallibangers (code for Beatallica fans) to translate the lyrics into their respective languages and then transcribe the song phonetically so lead singer Jaymz Lennfield would be able to pronounce them accurately. From there, Lennfield and studio engineer Flemball Rasmartin faced the unruly task of trying to fit these rough translations, that were often much longer than the originals, into the spacing of the chord progressions. City of Evil $17.98 Avenged Sevenfold’s first two albums had a clear influence from heavy metal, but the California combo also freely incorporated emo, screamo, and post-hardcore elements. The mixing and matching meant 2003’s Waking the Fallen had as many sighing harmonies as it did harmonized guitar freakouts. And yet City of Evil, the band’s third record and Warner debut, is absolutely rife with the imagery and pacing of classic metal. Look at that artwork. It features a skeletal swordsman flying a steed with steaming nostrils over the urban inferno of the title; tattoos, demons, and a skull with flapping wings adorn the lyric book. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal influence is immediate and prevalent, from the maniacally rippling percussion throughout to the triumphantly whining lead guitars in the chorus of “Blinded in Chains,” or the soaring melody in “Burn It Down” that meets its match in Metallica-styled verses. The downshifts into guttural roars are largely gone, replaced by better-integrated atmospheric stretches or the tighter songcraft of a track like “Bat Country,” which intersects punk and pop influences in a manner similar to My Chemical Romance. At over seven minutes, “Wicked End” is a late-album standout. Vocalist M. Shadows rips through couplets like “We’ve grown in numbers, six hundred sixty-six/War breaks, a sign of the end, eternally expelled/Look to the sky for knowledge, the stars align tonight,” guitarists Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance trade off blistering solos, and there’s a full choral interlude in the center, complete with an angelic host and sighing cellos. Which is all totally metal, and refreshingly unmarred by attempts to fit too many jumbled genres in. City of Evil’s ballads are a little trite, and even its double-bass raging doesn’t necessarily break new ground. Famously browbeaten into accepting Lars Ulrich and producers Bob Rock’s dictum that guitar solos were “dated” and thereby verboten for 2003’s St. Anger — a fraught recording chronicled on the 2004 documentary Some Kind of Monster — Metallica’s lead guitarist dominates this 2008 sequel, playing with an euphoric fury not heard in years, if not decades. This aesthetic shift isn’t because Hammett suddenly rules the band: powerless to add solos to St. Anger, he couldn’t reinstate them without the blessing of Ulrich and James Hetfield, the politburo of Metallica. The duo suffered some combination of shame and humility in the wake of the muddled St. Anger and Monster, convincing these two unmovable forces to change direction. They ditched longtime producer Rock — who’d helmed every album since 1991’s breakthrough blockbuster Metallica — in favor of Rick Rubin, patron saint of all veteran rockers looking to reconnect with their early spark. Rubin may be the go-to producer for wayward superstars but as the producer of Slayer, he’s also rooted in thrash, so he understands the core of Metallica’s greatness and gently steers them back to basics on Death Magnetic. Of course, Metallica’s basics are pretty complex: intertwined guitar riffs, frenetic solos, and thunderous double-bass drums stitched together as intricate seven-minute suites. Metallica slowly weaned themselves away from labyrinthine metal during the ’90s, tempering their intensity, straightening out riffs, spending nearly as much time exploring detours as driving the main road, all the while losing sight of their identity.
