Their biggest pop and rock exports — Bj? rk and Sig? r Ros, respectively — have borne very little relation to what the rest of the world thinks of as pop and rock, so why should their most promising young neo-classical composer be any different? At an age when most young men are still trying to decide between grad school and the night shift at Denny’s, Olafur Arnalds has already made a name for himself as a musical maverick who skirts the edges of the classical, rock, electronic, and avant-garde worlds with enthusiastic ease, a Nico Muhly with a higher tolerance for cold weather, if you will. On his second full-length release, Arnalds moves further away from electronics to embrace a more acoustically oriented approach centered on piano and strings. Electronics do play a supporting role — they’re simply used to enhance the atmosphere here and there, but in the main, Arnalds is creating 21st century chamber music here, as the piano makes simple, elegant statements whose harmonic possibilities are further fleshed out by the strings. And Arnalds may be a modernist in terms of pushing stylistic boundaries, but he still has some old-school, downright romantic notions about melodic movement — you won’t find any polytonality or serial music among these tracks. Arnalds prefers instead to repurpose old-school harmonic conventions in a new context, offering the listener a readily accessible emotional connection but still breaking new ground. And on the few strategic spots in the album where Arnalds drops in drums and/or electric guitar and repetitive motifs, the effect is not dissimilar to the headier moments of the aforementioned Sig? r Ros, or perhaps early-? 70s Pink Floyd at their most ethereal, showing the rock crowd that they too have a point of entry into this music. ~ J. …As It Never Was $15.98 The more musical and nuanced bands in extreme metal do not live by volume and brute force alone. Those are the bands that have enough going on melodically and harmonically that they would still sound good even if they opted to unplug and perform in an acoustic environment — which, in fact, is exactly what Eluveitie did when they recorded Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion in late 2008. Minus the crunching metal guitar they usually favor, Eluveitie provided an acoustic-oriented folk-rock album that wasn’t as heavy or hard-driving as their other releases, but was quite edgy nonetheless. Everything Remains (As It Never Was), however, marks their return to full-fledged metal, and the blend of forcefulness and musicality that served them well on previous electric albums also serves them well this time. The Swiss folk metal/melodic death metal unit’s interest in Medieval and Celtic music goes beyond the superficial; it is an integral part of what Eluveitie does. So on Everything Remains (As It Never Was), bruising metal guitar, thrashiness, and death metal-growling vocals are right at home with flutes, pipes, whistles, and other instruments traditionally used in European folk. This is an excellent CD that manages to be dark, menacing, and enchanting at the same time. Granted, Eluveitie’s blend of death metal and Euro-folk elements won’t appeal to death metal purists, but for those who do appreciate folk metal, Everything Remains (As It Never Was) is exactly what the Medieval doctor ordered. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

12 Gauge $14.98 As one of heavy metal’s most popular subgenres, melodic death metal has seemingly had every possible angle covered, but Finland’s Kalmah have arguably challenged that assumption with their late-? 00s efforts, after striking upon a style enhanced by an unconventional blend of serrated thrash riffing and swirling synthesizers. This blend is once again showcased in impressive fashion by the group’s sixth full-length, 12 Gauge, which, if anything, is even more aggressive than its immediate predecessors, on the strength of raging moshers like “Bullets Are Blind,” “Hook the Monster” and “Godeye.” Yes, those aforementioned keyboards continuously shadow the frenzied guitar action (notably on “One of Fail”), and Antti Kokko’s inspired solos and occasional acoustic intros see (“Rust Never Sleeps,” the title track) bring frequent melodic contrasts to the table, but brutality ultimately reigns supreme as the dominating emotion here. Actually, even vocalist Pekka Kokko seems to put a little more “GRRR” into his growls this time around, and he certainly digs deeper in his bowels than on Kalmah’s most recent release, 2008’s For the Revolution, to help give the band’s more extreme-minded supporters exactly what they wish for with this excellent album. On this album Kidjo pays tribute to the people who inspired her career, including her mother, Miriam Makeba, and American R&B artists like Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and Otis Redding. And while the tunes Kidjo tackles may be familiar, her arrangements turn them inside out and shed new light on their African roots. “Cold Sweat” gets a take that salutes the Afro-beat of Fela Kuti, who used Brown’s funk for his own music. The rhythm-heavy track swings like mad, with Kidjo’s powerful vocal climbing the scale and weaving in and around the backbeat. She bases her version of “Mbube” (better known in the U.S. as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”) on the singing of Makeba, and uses the original Zulu lyrics. A simple acoustic guitar and percussion arrangement gives Kidjo room to show off her impressive range and emotional skill. Kidjo used to make up words to the American songs she couldn’t understand, and sings Yoruba lyrics to Otis Redding’s “I’ve Got Dreams to Remember.” Its Memphis-meets-Cotonou approach is intensified by the female backing vocalists and Kidjo’s wailing high end. Bollywood tunes were also a big part of Kidjo’s upbringing. On “Dil Main Chuppa Ke Pyar Ka,” a hit by Mohammed Rafi, Steve Gorn drops a flute solo that recalls a Zulu pennywhistle into a Congolese rhythm track. Are You Experienced [CD/DVD] $14.99 On Are You Experienced — one of the most stunning debuts in rock history and one of the definitive albums of the psychedelic era — Jimi Hendrix synthesized various elements of the cutting edge of 1967 rock into music that sounded both futuristic and rooted in the best traditions of rock, blues, pop, and soul. It was his mind-boggling guitar work, of course, that got most of the ink, building upon the experiments of British innovators like Jeff Beck and Pete Townshend to chart new sonic territories in feedback, distortion, and sheer volume. It wouldn’t have meant much, however, without his excellent material, whether psychedelic frenzy (“Foxey Lady,” “Manic Depression,” “Purple Haze”), instrumental freak-out jams (“Third Stone from the Sun”), blues (“Red House,” “Hey Joe”), or tender, poetic compositions (“The Wind Cries Mary”) that demonstrated the breadth of his songwriting talents. Not to be underestimated were the contributions of drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding, who gave the music a rhythmic pulse that fused parts of rock and improvised jazz. Many of these songs are among Hendrix’s very finest; it may be true that he would continue to develop at a rapid pace throughout the rest of his brief career, but he would never surpass his first LP in terms of consistently high quality. The British and American versions of the album differed substantially when they were initially released in 1967; a subsequent reissue does everyone a favor by gathering all of the material from the two records in one place, adding a few B-sides from early singles as well. And the 2010 Legacy Edition adds a short documentary DVD featuring interviews with Chas Chandler, Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding as well as Eddie Kramer in the studio with the multi-track masters. B? b? Mo T? nd? $16.98 It’s been ten years since King Sunny Ade last released a studio album, so this is a welcome return for Nigeria’s finest, backed up by a vigorous young band on a double-CD set that gives him plenty of time to stretch out. There might not be too many tracks, but that’s because they all receive plenty of air, especially the half-hour-plus of “Baba Mo Tunde,” which takes wing halfway through and soars like a Grateful Dead jam for the remaining 15 minutes. The production is lovingly crisp, with the percussion well to the fore. King Sunny Ade himself seems happier to play a background role, although there are moments when he comes to the fore and his delightfully incisive guitar work rolls out like a bell, as on part of “Eyi Ma Dun To.” That’s one of two jokers in the pack here, beginning in a very folksy way, with plentiful flute, before capturing the eternal groove. The other anomaly is the King Britt remix of “Baba Mo Tunde,” shorter than the original and eminently dispensable next to the real thing. Americans Wayne Horvitz and Joe Doria both add keyboard, with “Oro Yi Bale” a virtual Hammond-fest that adds Transatlantic soul to the Yoruba mix. This is Ade at his finest, not even losing a yard of his pace over the last decade. Now we should all just hope that we don’t have to wait ten more years for his next work. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi

BBC Sessions [Deluxe Edition] [2CD/1DVD] $22.99 These are the recordings that Jimi Hendrix made for BBC radio in the late ’60s. As such, they’re loose, informal, and off-the-top-of-his-head improvisational fun. These versions of the hits “Foxey Lady,” “Fire,” two versions of “Purple Haze,” and “Hey Joe” stay surprisingly close to the studio versions, but the tone of Hendrix’s guitar on these is positively blistering and worth the price of admission alone. There’s also a lot of blues on this two-disc collection, and Hendrix’s versions of “Hoochie Coochie Man” (with Alexis Korner on slide guitar), “Catfish Blues,” “Killing Floor,” and “Hear My Train a Comin’” find him in excellent form. But perhaps the best example of how loosely conceived these sessions were are the oddball covers that Hendrix tackles, including Stevie Wonder’s “I Was Made to Love Her” (featuring Wonder on drums), Dylan’s “Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?,” the Beatles’ “Day Tripper,” and, in recognition of his immediate competition, Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.” No lo-fi bootleg tapes here (everything’s from the original masters and gone over by Eddie Kramer), the music and sound are class-A all the way, making a worthwhile addition to anyone’s Hendrix collection. Bach: Sonatas & Partitas, BWV 1004-1006 $21.98 Clapton is God!” was the well-known graffiti scrawled across 20th century London, praising the Englishman’s fiery guitar playing. Based on Isabelle Faust’s blazing accounts of Bach’s sonatas and partitas on this 2010 Harmonia Mundi disc, one might expect to see the graffiti “Faust is God!” scrawled across 21st century Paris. Rather than play all six of these canonical works of the solo violin literature, Faust has chosen the D minor and E major partitas and placed the C major Sonata between them. All three are tremendously difficult both technically and expressively, but starting with the D minor Partita with its celebrated Chaconne was particularly audacious. Faust rises to the challenge with an utterly devastating account of the work. Playing with only a dab of vibrato but a boatload of virtuosity, she overcomes every technical hurdle in this surpassingly difficult work. She saves the best for last, and her Chaconne is stunningly powerful, as well as amazingly nuanced and profoundly moving. Her other two performances are equally impressive, especially the opening Adagio and Fugue from the C major Sonata, which builds from a whisper to a shattering contrapuntal climax. There have been other great recordings of these works, but Faust’s surely belongs among the best. Harmonia Mundi’s sound is close but not overly intimate. ~ James Leonard, Rovi

Why this now-marginalized genre — born in the ’20s and popularized in the ’60s via acts such as the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and the Even Dozen Jug Band (of which Muldaur was a member) — was never marketed with kids in mind is a good question, but Muldaur hits the perfect note with this collection. Played on washboards, spoons, kazoo, and other fun instruments — as well as guitar, banjo, bass, fiddle, et. al. — these old songs, with titles like “I Love to Ride My Camel” (wonder if it’s the same camel Muldaur sent to bed on her ’70s hit “Midnight at the Oasis”), “Under the Chicken Tree,” and “Singing in the Bathtub” are whimsical and silly, yet never condescending as so much children’s music tends to be. Muldaur’s voice is huskier than it was back when she was making her popular albums in the ’70s, but it’s well-suited to these tunes. This is what she started out doing half-a-century ago, and adults with a soft spot for the jug band-folk style, and for Muldaur’s output in recent years, will undoubtedly enjoy this music — much of it from the traditional folk canon — as much as their little ones. ~ Jeff Tamarkin, Rovi
