Elephant $7.88 Jokingly referred to as the White Stripes’ British album, Elephant is scattered with cultural references that give away the fact it was recorded far from home. Just listen to the lyrics on “Seven Nation Army” (“From the Queen of England to the hounds of Hell”) or the album outro, in which someone chips in, “Jolly good, cup of tea?” But while there are new twists here, from Meg White discovering he… |

Mer De Noms $7.92 “A Perfect Circle is not a side project,” proclaim the members of Perfect Circle. It’s a caution worth heeding, since the most identifiable name in the band is that of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of Tool. On the other hand, one wouldn’t be much inclined to file this one under “side project” anyway. The musicians involved go to great lengths to create something distinctive, and if th… |

Guitars $78.07 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The guitar is a musical instrument of the chordophone family, being a stringed instrument played by plucking, either with fingers or a pick. The guitar consists of a body with a rigid neck to which the strings, generally six in number but sometimes more, are attached. Guitars are traditionally constructed of various woods and strung with animal gut or, more recently, with either nylon or steel strings. Some modern guitars are made of polycarbonate materials. Guitars are made and repaired by luthiers. There are two primary families of guitars: acoustic and electric. ZON Guitars $90.81 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Zon Guitars is a manufacturer of professionallevel bass guitars founded in 1981 by Joseph Zon.The company is highly regarded among bass players for its highend bass guitar models which feature nontraditional designs and materials. The brand is most closely associated with endorser and player Michael Manring, who collaborated with the company in the mid1990s to design the Zon Hyperbass. The Hyperbass is a fretless fourstring model which has a radical body shape featuring an extended cutaway to give access to a threeoctave fretless fingerboard. The biggest departure from traditional construction is the use of four detuning heads (usually basses have at most one) and a unique bridge design, which allows selective tuning changes of one or more strings. This design allows quick changes to a vast selection of altered tunings. The design also incorporates four separate transducers mounted in various locations on the instrument and uses a special output connector to allow access to these individual signals in addition to the signal from the magnetic pickup. Robert Johnson (Guitars) $108.33 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Legendary Mississippi Delta blues man Robert Johnson (musician) has been called the King of the Delta Blues Singers, the Grandfather of Rock and Roll and the most important blues singer that ever lived. …Tick…Tick…Tick $15.98 Songwriter Steve Wynn, the former Dream Syndicate frontman, has been on a tear since 1996 when he offered Melting in the Dark. Since then, his records have featured howling, wailing rock & roll and deep, dark acoustic reflections — all of them bearing his trademark noir-ish lyrics that offer the shadowy side of life, love, and violence. He’s employed a variety of musicians, and they’ve always sounded like hired guns. On …Tick…Tick…Tick he’s got himself a real band. They’re all younger than he is, and they have the hunger it takes to really execute Wynn’s unique songs. Start with drummer Linda Pitmon, who acts as co-producer (along with Wynn and Craig Schumacher) on these sides. Add to this the fact that the entire band (including Dave DeCastro on bass and guitarist Jason Victor) plots the arrangements. Wynn’s willful loss of total control has benefited him in spades. The set jumps out of the gate howling with “Wired,” where it sounds as if Wynn is singing through a megaphone. It’s followed by the creepy rocker “Cindy, It Was Always You,” co-written with ? ber hard-boiled crime fiction novelist George Pelecanos. On “Killing Me,” Wynn employs Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?” guitar riff and mutates it into something utterly unhinged. The shuffle gets moved into overdrive as Victor makes his guitar scream, roar, and squeal while Wynn holds down the rhythm and overdubs a distorted slide. It’s followed by a seemingly simple ballad entitled “The Deep End,” which rises in drama to the breaking point about two thirds of the way through. It’s full of a kind of emptiness and questioning about the experience of loss; it expresses fear at the ensuing emptiness and the apprehension of being in this space. DeCastro’s bass enters about a minute in, and propels the guitars as Pitmon accents every line as if it were the gospel truth — and for the singer, it is. The swirling beauty that rises in the middle of the track transforms the protagonist’s voice, as if by … |

01011001 $19.98 With Ayreon, Dutch multi-instrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen has built a career around massive prog metal opuses with hordes of guest vocalists. Basically, anybody in metal who can hold a tune has sung for Ayreon at some point. 01011001 features Anneke Van Giersbergen (ex-the Gathering), Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Floor Jansen (After Forever), Tom Englund (Evergrey), Hansi K? rsch (Blind Guardian), Simone Simons (Epica), Ty Tabor (King’s X), and Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation), among many others. These singers are the focal points of their bands, but in Ayreon, they’re merely characters in Lucassen’s rock operas. 01011001 is a sprawling two-disc set that one critic called “the longest CD ever made.” Indeed, the album spans 100 minutes, and feels like 100 years. It’s a perfect fit for the Inside/Out label — pristine production, byzantine songs that feel like full albums, hi-tech synths that wish they were guitars. Lucassen really, really likes his synths; in “Waking Dreams,” he entirely forgoes bass in favor of a percolating ostinato that suggests a beefier Kraftwerk. Electronics also pervade the percussion; “Beneath the Waves” is as if Alan Parsons covered the Beastie Boys’ “So What’cha Want.” Ray gun synths, operatic vocals, fake and real strings, and even Celtic melodies adorn this sonic mansion. Its ambition would be laughable if the record didn’t actually fulfill it often. Admittedly, such fulfillment was purchased at Guitar Center (or its Dutch equivalent); the record is most touching when it strips down to acoustic guitar on the gorgeously compact “Web of Lies.” These two discs, subtitled Planet Y and Earth, are about humanity’s disconnect with itself and destruction of the planet. But that’s really not important. Music this over the top almost defies criticism. Reviewing it is like reviewing the world’s tallest building. It doesn’t care; it just goes on and on. ~ Cosmo Lee, Rovi |

114CE Cutaway Grand Auditorium Acoustic Electric Guitar with Gig Bag $849 The Taylor 114CE is part of the redesigned 100 series of acoustic guitars. The Taylor 114EC Acoustic Guitar boasts a bookmatched Sitka Spruce soundboard with Taylors X bracing. The Taylor 114CE also features their Grand Auditorium body style, which is a slightly smaller body that is similar to the classic dreadnought shape of the 110 model, yet delivers that characteristic big dreadnought tone. The back and sides are constructed from African sapele, which possesses a similar aesthetic and tone as mahogany. As a tonewood, Sapele is denser and harder than mahogany, so it has a slightly brighter sound than its more familiar counterpart. Sitka Spruce grows in a coastal "pocket" from Northern California to Alaska. This dense, straight-grained wood has the highest strength and elasticity-to-weight ratio among available tonewoods, an attribute that makes it an ideal material not only for soundboards, but for internal bracing, as well. Sitka produces a slightly brighter tone than does Engelmann. The cutaway body design of the Taylor 114CE allows you to access the upper register notes for when youre reaching for a little extra in your soloing. You will love the ease and playability of the fast, thin profile of the sapele neck and 20 fret ebony fingerboard. When its time to plug in and hit the stage, the Taylor 114CE features the Expression System Transducer, or ES-T, is a single-source, under-saddle transducer with individual elements for each string. The ES-T has an onboard preamp and features a custom-voiced EQ with a simplified volume, bass, and treble control layout. The system is powered by a 9-volt battery, with a battery life LED power indicator. The pickup also has a Phase switch for feedback control, which is located on the preamp board inside the soundhole. The Taylor 114CE is equally at home on stage, in studio, or the front porch. 914CE Grand Auditorium Acoustic Electric Guitar $4299 The sleek lines of the Taylor 914CE'sGrand Auditorium body are accentuated by a softly-rounded Venetian cutaway, complementing its shimmering appointments. The finest Indian rosewood and Sitka spruce deliver a tone that can only be described as "an experience."In fact, every material used on these guitars is premium quality, from the hand-selected Sitka spruce tops to the iridescent pieces of abalone used for the inlay work to the elegant Gotoh tuners. The 900 Series guitars are true Taylor masterworks. It sports the Taylor Expression System to capture every nuance as never heard before. Includes hardshell case.About the Taylor Expression SystemTaylor spent several years researching acoustic amplification and recruited some of the industry's best minds, including Mr. Rupert Neve (inventor of the mixing console). They experimented and tested. Andmade discoveries. The result is an exceptionally-pure reproduction of your Taylor guitar's natural sound. Here's how it works.A patented Dynamic String Sensor mounted in the neck measures string vibrations and converts them into an electronic signal. Two strategically-placed Dynamic Body Sensors capture vibrations in the top of the guitar. All three signals are transferred to the preamp, which was designed by Mr. Neve. Tone controls allow the player to adjust volume, bass, and treble. When set flat, the tone controls add no color and produce the "purest", natural sound. Or, add bass or treble (or subtract) to adjust for the room or personal tastes. The balanced, low-impedance signal the Expression System produces can run direct into a mixer or PA in most situations, and is free of distortion at almost any volume. The Expression System is a revolution in acoustic guitar amplification, and is available exclusively on Taylor guitars in 300 Series and above. AKG C 451 B Condenser Microphone $579 The C451B is an excellent tool for accurately capturing signals rich in transients such as drums, instruments with a percussive sound, acoustic guitar, or for overhead applications. Responding to growing demand, AKG decided to make the C451B with the same acoustic performance as the popular original C 451 EB + CK 1, with dramatically improved specifications. Using an extremely light diaphragm, the new C451B is almost totally insensitive to handling noise. Other features include an all-metal body for excellent protection from RF interference and high reliability for excellent results under almost all conditions. The C451B is a cardioid only design with a permanently fixed capsule (a departure from the previous modular system). The acoustics of the original cardioid-capsule, CK 1, are modeled and matched in the current version, producing the unique overall rising frequency characteristics. The rise is no more than 3 dB and is broadly centered around 12 kHz. Its transformerless preamp uses surface mount technology and, therefore is lighter, yet more rugged than its predecessor. Switchable 10 and 20 dB pads are now integrated. Maximum sound pressure levels in the range of 155 dB (in the 20 dB sensitivity position) can be attained with no greater than 0.5% distortion. A selectable low frequency, or bass roll-off option, provides 12 dB per octave attenuation below 75 or 150 Hz. The C451B, like its predecessor, is most commonly used in studio and tour sound applications such as miking choirs, drums, percussion and acoustic guitars. It operates on all phantom voltages between 9 and 52 volts. The SA 40 stand adapter and W 90 windscreen are included as standard accessories. |

Abnormally Attracted to Sin $17.98 After the high conceptualism that lorded over 2005’s The Beekeeper and 2007’s American Doll Posse, singer and songwriter Tori Amos has decided to return to the relatively simple songs-as-songs approach on Abnormally Attracted to Sin. Those recordings, fine though they may have been, stretched the artist’s reputation and the patience of her fans to the breaking point; based on her record sales, she whittled them down to simply the Tori cult (not a derogatory term, since many of her fans are proud to refer to themselves that way). The scope of this set in comparison with the previous two offerings seems more like a retrenchment than anything else. Not that there’s anything at all wrong with that. There are songs on Abnormally Attracted to Sin that are as strong as anything she’s written. Certainly the opener “Give,” with its trip-hop rhythmic landscape and shifting backing vocals, slippery synth bass, and acoustic piano is beautifully constructed with a melody line that glides along a minor-key slant with a Middle Eastern tinge, and its lyric is both poignant and provocative. But then there is the single, “Welcome to England,” whose 4/4 loop, drifting piano, and blend of guitars (electric and acoustic), strings, and ambient sounds is rudimentary Amos at best, and boring at worst. The refrain creates a bit of a hook, at least enough to catch the ear, but that’s all. “Strong Black Vine,” with its echoes of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” in the intro, tosses Amos back into her Jerry Lee Lewis dilemma: she loves and hates religious faith, and is both ensnared by it and saved by it. It’s a rocker as far as her songs go, and works beautifully. “Maybe California” is a simple, straightforward modern pop ballad. It’s beautifully composed and delivered. The track listing goes on, and on, and on, and on. And if there is a problem with Abnormally Attracted to Sin, this is it: it’s 73 minutes long. At the dawn of the CD era, it made sense on some level to be this “generous… |

Like the traditional electric bass guitar and the double bass, the acoustic bass guitar commonly has four strings, which are normally tuned E-A-D-G, an octave below the lowest four strings of the 6-string guitar, which is the same tuning pitch as an electric bass guitar. Because it can be difficult to hear an acoustic bass guitar without an amplifier, even in settings with other acoustic instruments, most acoustic basses have pickups, either magnetic or piezoelectric or both, so that they can be amplified with a bass amp. Traditional music of Mexico features several varieties of acoustic bass guitars, such as the baja sexto, with six pairs of strings, and the guitarrón or chitarrone a very large, deep-bodied Mexican 6-string acoustic bass guitar played in Mariachi bands. |

Australian Crawl Members $9.25 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Simon John Binks (born 27 November 1956, Mount Eliza, Melbourne) is an Australian rock musician who was a guitarist and singer-songwriter for Australian Crawl from founding in 1978 to disbanding in 1986. Binks was raised in the Mornington Peninsula suburb of Mount Eliza on the outskirts of Melbourne and educated at The Peninsula School. Spiff Rouch was a band formed in 1976, it included Binks and fellow locals James Reyne, Bill McDonough, Guy McDonough, Paul Williams, and Robert Walker. By early 1978, Spiff Rouch had separated and Australian Crawl was formed with Binks (lead guitar), Reyne (lead vocals, piano, harmonica), and Williams (bass guitar), they were joined by James Reyne’s younger brother David Reyne (drums) and schoolmate Brad Robinson (rhythm guitar, backing vocals). Australian Crawl performed their first live gig in October 1978. Bill McDonough (drums) replaced David Reyne within the first year. Binks wrote or co-wrote four tracks for Australian Crawl’s 1980 debut album The Boys Light Up as well as guitars (lead, slide, acoustic) and vocals. Bill’s brother, Guy McDonough (guitars, singer-songwriting) joined Australian Crawl later that year. For their second album Sirocco in 1981, Binks supplied two tracks, and guitar work; the third album, Sons of Beaches in 1982, had Binks providing guitars but no songwriting credits. Drummer Bill McDonough left early in 1983, the Crawl recorded an EP Semantics with Graham Bidstrup on drums. Of the four tracks, Binks wrote “White Limbo” which was also the B-side of the European single release “Reckless”. Mountain climber, Lincoln Hall, quotes lyrics from Binks’ song in his book, White Limbo: The first Australian climb of Mt Everest (1985). The EP Semantics charted on the Australian Singles Char… More: |

BI-WS1000N2 Acoustic Electric Guitar (Natural Carbon/Graphite) $2499 The Black Ice Series embodies Artistry. Each instrument is unique. The soundboard on each guitar is meticulously crafted to achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance without overbuilding it. Each soundboard is individually conceived so every guitar is unique. Unique in design and unique in tone. The WS is a wonderfully versatile guitar. Combining the best qualities of large and small-bodied guitars, this body shape is ideally suited for a variety of musical situations. A large, deep chamber gives the WS strong projection and rich bass. The narrow waist and tight upper bout allow for a ringing treble, good balance and clear definition of individual notes. Overall, the WS is impeccably balanced. The shapely curves and lightweight make the WS a comfortable guitar to cradle or stand with. The extra deep cutaway encourages playing up the fretboard. The N2 neck is a result of extensive, long-term collaboration with the renowned artist Steve Miller and Master Luthier John Bolin. The neck design is based on a modified "U" profile that has been popular in guitars since the 1950s. While the N2 has a substantial feel, it is ergonomically sound and actually results in better transfer of string vibration energy to the soundboard. The N2 features a truss rod that is accessible from the headstock. Graphite does not warp or bow with changes in humidity and temperature. The purpose of the truss rod in the N2 is to allow customization of the relief to suit individual preferences. |

Baby 81 $8.68 Baby 81 is an ambitious, powerful, guitar-driven rock’n'roll record that’s guaranteed to get people jumping and thinking. Sonically it’s a far cry from 2005’s rootsy, acoustic Howl, Baby 81 was born only minutes after the final track on Howl was completed, when Peter Hayes (guitars/vocals) and Robert Levon Been (bass/vocals/keys) were rejoined in the studio by drummer Nick Jago after a brief break up earlier that year. I was almost in tears the whole time, it was very emotional, Jago recalls. That was the most memorable recording session I’ve had. Been felt the same way: After laying down the inspired, hard-charging Took Out a Loan and 666 Conducer, I held onto those two songs for the next year, daydreaming about what would happen if we finished that Been says.Baby 81 is a driving rock’n'roll record that still maintains Howl’s folky core. I see it kind of as the sister of Howl, Hayes says. Lyrically, the group lasers in on a theme they’ve explored before: Personal revolt. It’s gotta start somewhere, and if it ain’t on a personal level, it’s too easy to beat the crap out of governments with words, Hayes explains. Start with yourself and hopefully you get enough people doing it on their own and we can all come together. Track Listing1. Took Out a Loan2. Berlin3. Weapon of Choice4. Window5. Cold Wind6. It’s Not What You Wanted7. 666 Conducer8. All You Do is Talk9. Lien on Your Dreams10. Need Some Air11. Killing the Light12. American X13. Am I Only? |

Bad Man’s Blood $17.98 For decades, bluesman and songwriter Ray Bonneville worked day jobs while playing his songs in coffee houses and house parties at night, eventually earning a place on international festival stages with Muddy Waters and Bukka White long before he had a recording contract. Since 1993, Bonneville’s issued a host of recordings of consistently high quality. 2008’s Goin’ by Feel, produced by Gurf Morlix, scored him a number one at Americana with “I Am the Big Easy,” his tribute to New Orleans (Bonneville lived there before relocating to Austin). Bad Man’s Blood was co-produced with Justin Douglas and Morlix (electric, baritone, and bass guitars and banjo), percussionist Mike Meadows, and saxophonist Dexter Payne, in various combinations. Bonneville plays an amalgam of acoustic and electric guitars, harmonica, and his trademark foot stomp. The blues songs — the poetic, narrative title track (inspired no doubt by hardbitten characters from Gothic American fiction) to raw, skeletal, electric snaky rhythm constructions like “Mississippi,” that addresses the Delta’s tradition in his playing and the horrors of the river flooding in its historical story line. “Night Walker” is a spooky 12-bar, too, but in its acoustic, minor-key architecture, it feels more like a tango. Elsewhere, “Sugar and Riley” has more New Orleans R&B in it, especially with its strolling sax lines and shuffling percussion. “Good Times” and “River John,” though very different songs in feel and melody, come from French Canadian and Cajun folk melodies. “Darlin’ (Put Your Suitcase Down),” with a beautiful harmony vocal by Morlix and his slow, pulsing bassline, offers Bonneville a supporting tightrope to walk on the most vulnerable love song he’s written. “Blonde of Mine” is acoustic Cajun blues at its best, and there are few as good at it as Bonneville. There are no clich? s, just the heart of the music’s grain. “Crosses and Flowers” is knife-edged in its narrative tension. Morlix and Bo… |

Behringer LX1BPRO Bass V-Amp Pro $369.99 The BASS V-AMP PRO’s 32 amp models are organized into three groups: CLEAN, ACOUSTIC and GUITAR. Just twist the dedicated dial to plug into unbelievably authentic simulations of the greatest acoustic and electric bass sounds from the 1950s to today. When you select an amp model, a speaker cabinet model is automatically selected. But if you’d prefer a different model, just go to EDIT>CABINETS, then use the BANK UP/DOWN buttons to navigate through all 15 options. Just like on an actual bass amp, you’ve got a three-band EQ, GAIN, VOLUME and MASTER VOLUME dials. There’s even a COMPRESSOR dial for tight, smooth tone with a variable attack. By holding the TAP button, the TREBLE dial becomes a PRESENCE control. This enables the adjustment of a high-frequency filter that can add or remove a “shimmer” from the BASS V-AMP PRO’s tone. |

Boss RC-30 Stereo Loop Station $418.4 BOSS celebrates the 10th anniversary of the LoopStation with an exciting new lineup of RC-series loopers! First out of the gate is the RC-30, a Twin Pedal multitrack looper with two synchronized stereo tracks and built-in loop effects. Plug in your instrument of choice, or even a microphone; an XLR input is provided, complete with phantom power. Record for up to three hours direct to internal memory, adding effects as you go. The USB 2.0 port lets you save your loops externally, and import/export WAV files. Twin Stereo Loops Create and stack multi-layered loops with twin stereo tracks — each track being independently controllable with dedicated volume faders and track-select buttons. Creating loops is convenient with the Auto Recording feature, which starts recording the moment you begin playing your guitar, bass, keyboard, or singing, or as soon as you start a connected audio player. Count-In mode gives you one-bar of rhythm before recording starts. You can Undo/Redo as you go. The sky’s the limit, with three hours of recording time! Onboard Effects Fans of BOSS’s world-famous effects will be pleased to find a lineup of creative effects onboard the RC-30. Bend Down provides a dramatic pitch-bend effect. Step Phaser changes phase in incremental steps. Sweep Filter alters frequency in sync with the current tempo. Tempo Delay produces a tempo-synced delay effect. Lo-Fi intentionally degrades the sound to create a distinctive character. Dunk your loops in cool effects without the cost and hassle of adding external gear. Mic Input Vocalists can plug a microphone of their choice directly into the RC-30’s XLR microphone input, complete with phantom power if you wish to use a condenser mic. Sing, overdub, and make multi-layered loops of your voice, create vocal sound-effects patterns, or point the microphone at your acoustic musical instruments, or anything that makes noise and turn it into a cool loop. You don’t have to be a musician to get in on the LoopStati |
