No Pain, No Gain – Learn to Play Guitar
Guitars are among the coolest musical instruments out there. If you like to learn a trick that can impress or if you simply want to know one of the easiest ways to discover your hidden musical talents, then you definitely have to learn to play guitar.
The most important thing you have to know when you want to learn to play guitar is that it requires patience – a lot of it. Although a guitar is portable and very chic looking, playing it can literally hurt you, especially if you’re a first-timer. Your fingers fall prey to the merciless friction from the strings and they end up red and painful at the end of the day; unless, of course, you opt to use a pick to pluck the strings with. But you can never really know how it feels like to learn to play guitar without using your fingers. Never using your fingers to play the guitar is like not experiencing how to drive a car with manual transmission. No pain, no gain.
So, first things first, get on the right playing position. Have the guitar rest on your lap. If you are right-handed, the guitar’s neck, or its long part, should be held by your left hand. Position yourself comfortably. Playing the guitar requires a lot of back hunching and arm moving so be sure that you are comfortable.
Now try plucking the strings without using the frets (the spaces between the metal strips that are line the guitar’s neck) and listen closely to the sound they make. This is called playing it “open.” The thickest string, the 6th, should make the lowest sound. It is an E note. The 1st string, the thinnest, is also an E note, however, it makes the highest sound. If you are right-handed, the 6th string should be the top string and the 1st should be the bottom. The order of the strings from top to bottom is: EADGBE. Try making a mnemonic device to help you memorize the string order.
Now, try to use the frets when plucking. Do this by pining down a string to a fret with the tip of your finger then pluck the string’s extension. Begin with the first fret, which can be found near the headstock, or the place where the tuning keys are located. Continue with the following frets and with different strings. Take note of the different sounds you create – they are the note sounds. Also, be sure to keep your finger right at the middle of a fret so that you’ll create better sounds.
After learning how to make individual note sounds, you now have to study playing chords. Chords are groups of two or more notes that sound better than individual notes. The most common major chords are: CAGED.
Learning the guitar can be a tough job. So it is important to devote time in practicing. Yes, by the end of the day you will probably have to nurse both your fingers and your self-confidence back to life, but that is all part of the process.
Remember: no pain, no gain.

‘Til Shiloh [Expanded] $11.99 1993’s Voice of Jamaica was a stellar set, an aural collage of the island, with its swirl of diverse styles, sounds and themes. Bringing dancehall to the wider world, that album was a revelation, and to attempt to better it would have been futile. And so, Buju Banton didn’t try, instead he moved in a new direction. After the completion of Voice of Jamaica, two of the Banton’s friends were killed; their murders prompting him to re-evaluate his own life, leading to his conversion to Rastafarianism, and bringing to an end his glorification of the gun. These life-changing events are reflected throughout much of ‘Til Shiloh, which proves a much more introspective set than anything heard from Banton before. This is most evident on the haunting sufferer’s song “Untold Stories,” as Banton reflects on the world around him, beautifully accompanied by a gentle rhythm and Glen Browne’s evocative acoustic guitar. But Jah now sustains him, prompting the artist to open the album with the brief a cappella psalm, “Shiloh,” then launching into “Til I’m Laid to Rest,” which revisits the sufferer’s theme, but intertwines it with an homage to Africa and his faith in the promised land. Still, Banton has not yet found peace, and his inner turmoil is at its rawest on “Murderer.” Written in the aftermath of the aforementioned killings, the Banton struggles with his grief and fierce desire for vengeance; all else pales before this most emotionally powerful of songs. It’s “Not an Easy Road,” as Banton vividly relates on that song, and he has been left vulnerable. Still, he opens his soul on “Wanna Be Loved,” and exposes his loneliness on “What Ya Gonna Do” joined by Wayne Wonder. “Complaint” has Banton toasting over this fabulous Garnett Silk number, praising Jah and scattering the heathens before him. “Chuck It So” takes a similar stance, as Banton takes on a Big Man, with the 2 Friends Crew sweetening his ferocious assault. It’s a heavy-hitting album, with only “Hush … |

…And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness $16.98 They must be putting something in the water over there in Iceland that makes musicians work in unexpected ways. Their biggest pop and rock exports — Bj? rk and Sig? r Ros, respectively — have borne very little relation to what the rest of the world thinks of as pop and rock, so why should their most promising young neo-classical composer be any different? At an age when most young men are still trying to decide between grad school and the night shift at Denny’s, Olafur Arnalds has already made a name for himself as a musical maverick who skirts the edges of the classical, rock, electronic, and avant-garde worlds with enthusiastic ease, a Nico Muhly with a higher tolerance for cold weather, if you will. On his second full-length release, Arnalds moves further away from electronics to embrace a more acoustically oriented approach centered on piano and strings. Electronics do play a supporting role — they’re simply used to enhance the atmosphere here and there, but in the main, Arnalds is creating 21st century chamber music here, as the piano makes simple, elegant statements whose harmonic possibilities are further fleshed out by the strings. And Arnalds may be a modernist in terms of pushing stylistic boundaries, but he still has some old-school, downright romantic notions about melodic movement — you won’t find any polytonality or serial music among these tracks. Arnalds prefers instead to repurpose old-school harmonic conventions in a new context, offering the listener a readily accessible emotional connection but still breaking new ground. And on the few strategic spots in the album where Arnalds drops in drums and/or electric guitar and repetitive motifs, the effect is not dissimilar to the headier moments of the aforementioned Sig? r Ros, or perhaps early-? 70s Pink Floyd at their most ethereal, showing the rock crowd that they too have a point of entry into this music. ~ J. 1960 Les Paul Standard VOS $5699 HistoryIn hindsight, its certainly difficult to fathom Gibsons Les Paul Standard of the late 1950s and early 1960s not appealing to the masses. Yet thats exactly what happened, even as Gibson officials tried desperately to fine tune the instrument and make it suitable to the general guitar-playing public. Sadly, their efforts proved unsuccessful as the Les Paul Standard was shelved midway through 1960 to make way for a new design that featured beveled edges, twin cutaways and a much thinner body the guitar known today as the SG Standard. The Les Paul Standards manufactured in 1960 all 635 of them represented the last attempts by Gibson to modify the guitars existing design in an effort to improve sales numbers that had fallen steadily since 1956. The guitars produced during the first half of 1960 were generally considered to be an extension of the 1959 Les Paul Standard, with the majority having thicker, rounded neck profiles (though not as thick as 1958), and many of them experiencing the same fading paint problem with the finish. By mid 1960, however, Gibson had begun manufacturing the Les Paul Standard with a much thinner neck profile, known today as the 60s Slim Taper profile. Body and FinishThe 1960s Standard changed the pigment in its Cherry Sunburst finish to a brighter, fade resistant red, known today in many circles as Tangerine sunburst. The change in pigment, along with Gibsons continued used of bookmatched maple tops with flamed or figured patterns, combined to produce some of the most visually appealing Les Paul Standards of the era.HardwareOf course, the rest of the 1960 Les Paul Standard embodied all of the changes of the previous three years changes that had transformed the guitar into the iconic model that it would eventually become some years later. Among the modifications were Gibsons legendary Patent Applied For humbucking pickups with metal covers, and jumbo-sized frets, all of which still adorns todays Les Paul Standard. 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 2 $9.99 Maureen Tucker once said that one of her greatest regrets about her tenure in the Velvet Underground is that the band didn’t record their shows, and while the live tapes that do survive of the group’s performances document an extraordinary band, sadly there aren’t very many of them. 1969: Velvet Underground Live, a two-record set released in 1974, is the best and most compelling (legally released) document of the band’s powers in concert, but given its length (over 104 minutes), when Mercury Records reissued the set on CD in 1988, they opted to send it out as two separate single-disc albums, rather than as a two-disc set. The three long songs that open 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 2 (they were the whole of side three on the vinyl release) capture the Velvets at their most hypnotically beautiful, easing from the slow but dramatic ebb and flow of “Ocean,” through the lovely melancholy of “Pale Blue Eyes,” into the slow, unbearable build to manic frenzy of “Heroin.” The disc’s second half finds the band in more conventional but no less satisfying form, shifting back and forth between mid-tempo numbers like “Over You” and “Some Kinda Love” and charging rockers such as “White Light/White Heat” (a fine version of “I Can’t Stand It” has been added for the CD issue). While Lou Reed’s passionate vocals and guitar work are front and center throughout, the rest of the band is in equally superb form, especially Sterling Morrison, still the finest foil Reed ever had on guitar, and Maureen Tucker, whose subtle, highly musical drumming is at once minimal and superbly intelligent. If you care at all about the Velvet Underground, both volumes of 1969: Velvet Undergound Live belong in your collection, but Vol. 2 is the one to get if you want to know how much more this band could do than create bracing noise. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

50th Anniversary Jazz Bass 4 String Bass $1999.99 The Fender Jazz Bass guitar was first delivered to the world in 1960. If the Precision Bass was a muscle car, the new Jazz bass was a sports car, and it proved incredibly popular with bassists of all styles worldwide.Although remarkably unchanged since its introduction half a century ago, the Jazz Bass did see a very gradual succession of subtle design refinements over the course of the past five decades. Accordingly, the limited edition 50th anniversary Jazz Bass is a truly distinctive instrument in that it boasts design touches from several periods in Jazz Bass history, including '60s-era lacquer finish, headstock logo, chrome bridge and pickup covers; '70s-era thumb rest and bridge pickup positioning; and modern-era high-mass bridge and graphite neck support rods.Includes a deluxe black hardshell case containing a cable, strap, polishing cloth and collectible 50th Anniversary Jazz Bass brochure. |

801 Live $11.99 801 provided Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera with one of his most intriguing side projects. Although the band only played three gigs in August and September 1976, this album captures a night when everything fell right into place musically. That should only be expected with names like Eno and Simon Phillips in the lineup. (Still, the lesser-known players — bassist Bill MacCormick, keyboardist Francis Monkman, and slide guitarist Lloyd Watson — are in exemplary form, too.) The repertoire is boldly diverse, opening with “Lagrima,” a crunchy solo guitar piece from Manzanera. Then the band undertakes a spacey but smoldering version of “Tomorrow Never Knows”; it’s definitely among the cleverest of Beatles covers. Then it’s on to crisp jazz-rock (“East of Asteroid”), atmospheric psych-pop (“Rongwrong”), and Eno’s tape manipulation showcase, “Sombre Reptiles.” And that’s only the first five songs. The rest of the gig is no less audacious, with no less than three Eno songs — including a frenetic “Baby’s on Fire,” “Third Uncle,” and “Miss Shapiro”’s dense, syllable-packed verbal gymnastics. There’s another unlikely cover of the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” while Manzanera turns in another typically gutsy instrumental performance on “Diamond Head.” This album marks probably one of the last times that Eno rocked out in such an unself-consciously fun fashion, but that’s not the only reason to buy it: 801 Live is a cohesive document of an unlikely crew who had fun and took chances. Listeners will never know what else they might have done if their schedules had been less crowded, but this album’s a good reminder. ~ Ralph Heibutzki, Rovi |

Later reissues of 801 Live added two more Eno songs as bonus tracks, “Golden Hours” and “The Fat Lady of Limbourg,” tilting the album more toward the singer/synthesizer player. ? dmenn $19.98 ? dmenn were a short-lived Icelandic hard-prog band; they released only one album before disbanding. But it was quite an album — a double disc, now remastered and fit onto a single CD, it encapsulates both their abilities and its time period quite well. There’s a single, “It Takes Love,” which is the only song out of 15 sung in English (and good English at that); tasteful organ and jazzy drums shadow the vocalist for a midtempo three-and-a-half-minute journey that skirts the territory explored by the Doors and the early Moody Blues. The lyrics aren’t the only thing that make this song stand out from the rest of the album, though. ? dmenn were primarily a boogie band with some artistic pretensions, and the rest of these songs are almost proto-metal at times, with plenty of distorted guitar solos and hard riffing. “Betri Heimur” is built on a hypnotic, caveman-simple bassline that’s not far away from what the Swedish band November were doing at the same time. Some songs, like “? ? r Sviku,” have the feel of electrified folk music, with a particularly energetic drummer (his work is excellent throughout, and his drum solo on “Frelsi” is well deserved). “Frelsi,” the last song on the disc, occupied all of side four on the original vinyl; it’s a sprawling, nearly 19-minute epic of the type nearly every rock band attempted at the time, but it’s got more cohesion and artfulness than most managed. The Shadoks label has taken as its mission the urge to prove that great rock can come from anywhere. With ? dmenn, they’ve made their case once again. ~ Phil Freeman, Rovi |

A Boy Named Goo $9.99 Produced by Lou Giordano with his trademark full-bodied, immediately accessible, but never washed-out sound, A Boy Named Goo finally got the band across to a wide audience, and deservedly so. Right from the start, the Goo Goo Dolls sound perfectly on the right track after Superstar Car Wash’s OK but ultimately go-nowhere feeling — “Long Way Down” is another stone-cold classic of wounded romanticism wedded to catchy Cheap Trick-tinged punk-pop, Rzeznik’s singing the not-so-secret weapon. Hearing him on the descending chorus, matching the just sad enough guitar crunch, makes one realize that there’s always hope for full-bodied rock & roll. The eternal Replacements tag now makes less sense than ever — the Goos have their own enjoyable sound, Rzeznik’s a more individual singer than ever, and all three rock out accordingly. Takac similarly has his own sonic improvements, his formerly rasped high register now just a little more controlled but no less affecting, as winners like “Burnin’ Up” and “Somethin’ Bad” easily demonstrate. Rzeznik-sung highlights are equally everywhere — the commercial but never stupid “Naked,” with a great chorus and immediately radio-friendly music, the equally sharp “Only One,” and the mighty fine “Ain’t That Unusual.” There’s no question what the highlight is, though — however untypical of the rest of the album’s mid-range feedback fun, “Name,” with its sweet but sad acoustic arrangement, made perfect sense as the Goos’ long-delayed radio breakthrough. Rzeznik’s empathetic vocal, delivering one of his best lyrics on favored subjects of friendship, loss, and fame, matches unfolky strumming and quiet energy, creating a song that feels like both a farewell to the American Dream and to a long-lost partner. All this without sounding a Bruce Springsteen sermon — a rare thing indeed. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |

A Christmas Album $11.99 At the age of 22, Amy Grant took another step in her career by issuing her first Christmas album in 1983. It was a logical-enough release for a Christian performer, but also one that suggested she was an established headliner, an artist whose versions of standards like “The Christmas Song” and “Little Town” (aka “O Little Town of Bethlehem”) would be interesting to listeners because she was singing them. In her carefully planned march to mass popularity, the album represented at least one tentative outreach in a musical direction Grant would not pursue. The leadoff track, “Tennessee Christmas,” found her husband and co-writer, Gary Chapman, playing a pedal steel guitar on a song that seemed intended to probe the country market and that actually earned some country radio play. But despite being a scion of the Nashville aristocracy (i.e., the wealthy families that long predated the rise of country music in the city), Grant was never really a country artist, and the rest of the album, cut at James William Guercio’s Caribou Ranch studio complex, reflected the increasing influence of West Coast pop on her sound, with Los Angeles studio aces like Lenny Castro, Bill Champlin, Victor Feldman, Richard Page, and Dean Parks among the credits. Also increasing his influence was songwriter/keyboardist Michael W. Smith, who contributed such songs as “Emmanuel,” a synthesizer-heavy pop/rock track that could have fit on one of Grant’s regular albums. So could some of the other material, in fact. A Christmas Album was a record for the audience Grant had attracted with her 1982 breakthrough (and about to be gold) LP, Age to Age, an audience of Christian rock fans attracted by her personal approach to faith. It looked forward to her straddling of secular and CCM music, and as her star rose, it sold well perennially, eventually achieving multi-platinum status, helping associate Grant with the Christmas season as she went on to record more seasonal albums and tape holiday sp… |

A Gathering of Promises $22.98 Recording for International Artists Records, the crazed Texas label that brought the world such acid-damaged visionaries as the 13th Floor Elevators, the Red Krayola, Lost & Found, and Electric Rubayyat, the Bubble Puppy seemed by comparison to be a beacon of semisanity — a rather typical psychedelic band of the period who seemed more interested in having a good time and cranking up the amps than in reimagining the size and shape of the inner cosmos. But that’s not to say they weren’t a good psychedelic band — the band’s best known tune, “Hot Smoke and Sassafras,” was a charging guitar-heavy rocker that deservedly became a hit single, and its flip side, “Loney,” was nearly as good. Truth to tell, those two songs are the most interesting tracks on the Bubble Puppy’s first album, A Gathering of Promises, but the rest of the material is certainly more than just filler — softer tunes such as “It’s Safe to Say” and the title cut show off the band’s surprisingly strong harmonies and folk-rock influences, while the interlocking guitars of Todd Potter and Rod Prince drive “Beginning,” “Hurry Sundown,” and the epic “I’ve Got to Reach You.” The Bubble Puppy could write and play like seasoned pros, and with the exception of “I’ve Got to Reach You” they had the sense to wrap up their tunes in three or four minutes, so that this album actually manages to end before it wears out its welcome. It’s not exactly a work of life-changing genius, but A Gathering of Promises is still a noticeably stronger and better crafted album than most bands of their time and place were turning out, and if it had enjoyed wider distribution (and another song or two as good as the single) who knows where they could have ended up. [The 2004 reissue tacks on monophonic single mixes of "Hot Smoke and Sassafras," "Lonely," "Hurry Sundown," and "Beginning," as well as four songs from non-LP singles; the mono mixes certainly boast a lot more punch than the often eccentric stereo v... |

A's, B's & EP's $10.98 The Animals' output on EMI has been so heavily reissued and recompiled so many times that none of it is especially rare, or notable for that reason -- it just stands up as music, especially the singles, which are what we have represented here. The compilation CD A's B's & EP's is a handy way of taking a tour of the group's early sound, up through the middle of 1965, boiling down their singles, B-sides, and EP's in excellent sound. It took the group a few tries to really master the art of making a strong album from start to finish, but -- as we're reminded here -- their 45s were beyond reproach, exciting, bold, and daring, and all memorable. Hearing Hilton Valentine's guitar crunching and chiming away on "I'm Crying," or John Steel's drums up close and personal on "Boom Boom," supporting Eric Burdon's voice and juxtaposed with Alan Price's organ, is still a bracing experience 40 years later -- and on this master, Valentine's trip down the fret board and Price's keyboard flourishes exude rippling energy and a bracing presence -- even on cheap speakers, Steel's snare is distinguishable from the rest of the rhythm section; and on "It's My Life" you can practically hear the action on his kit. And this disc is also a good opportunity for low-level fans to discover obscurities such "I'm Gonna Change the World" which, with its ambitious lyric and form, sort of anticipates the later compositions that Burdon would cut, on his own and away from virtually all help. The annotation is nothing special, the packaging has its weaknesses (in terms of the original releases of the songs), and EMI's Complete Animals still runs circles around this CD, but it's an okay piece to have and easier to find than that double-disc set, as of 2004. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi |

Above All $14.98 Don't let the murky sound quality, almost certainly a result of imperfect source tapes, fool you; Above All is an above-average slab of snotty garage psychedelia. The cloudy sound actually enhances the album in certain ways. The stab at "Da Blues" gives the song not exactly an authenticity but a grittiness that gives the performance the sound and texture of a live recording. The psychedelic cuts, on the other hand, have an enveloping claustrophobic sound that traps the listener beneath the music. While probably meant to be experienced under the influence of certain chemical enhancers, the music is trippy enough on its own to send the listener on a trip of sorts. That wouldn't matter, of course, if the songs were not strong or were less than fully formed, but that is not the case. The album opens with a fuzzed-up version of Lieber and Stoller's "Poison Ivy," but the rest of the album is given over to standout originals by Stack, with lead guitarist Rick Gould penning five of the nine cuts. "Only Forever" is a power pop/psychedelic hybrid with some nice fuzz guitar by Gould, and Bob Ellis' vigorous, potent drumming is perhaps the band's secret weapon. Buddy Clark's robust bass, too, is terrific and helps songs such as "Cars," "Everyday," and "Valleys" get completely inside the listener with uncommon force. On top of the psychedelic cacophony, Bill Sheppard's vocals simply wail. Stack was obviously skilled, as their resum? bears out, and it is apparent through the subpar sound that the band could be quite powerful. Gear Fab's CD is well worth hearing for fans of garage and psychedelia and may even qualify for the top echelon of unearthed psychedelic obscurities. ~ Stanton Swihart, Rovi |

Ace of Spades [Bonus Tracks] $18.99 With the 1980 release of Ace of Spaces, Mot? rhead had their anthem of anthems — that is, the title track — the one trademark song that would summarize everything that made this early incarnation of the band so legendary, a song that would be blasted by legions of metalheads for generations on end. It’s a legendary song, for sure, all two minutes and 49 bracing seconds of it. And the album of the same name is legendary as well, among Mot? rhead’s all-time best, often considered their single best, in fact, along with Overkill. Ace of Spades was Mot? rhead’s third great album in a row, following the 1979 releases of Overkill and Bomber, respectively. Those two albums have a lot in common with Ace of Spaces. The classic lineup — Lemmy (bass and vocals), “Fast” Eddie Clarke (guitar), and “Philthy Animal” Taylor (drums) — is still in place and sounding as alive and crazed as ever. The album is still rock-solid, boasting several superlative standouts. Actually, besides the especially high number of standouts on Ace of Spades — at least relative to Bomber, which wasn’t quite as strong overall as Overkill had been — the only key difference between this 1980 album and its two 1979 predecessors is the producer, in this case Vic Maile. The result of his work isn’t all that different from that of Jimmy Miller, the longtime Rolling Stones producer who had worked on Overkill and Bomber, but it’s enough to give Ace of Spaces a feeling distinct from its two very similar-sounding predecessors. This singular sound (still loud and in your face, rest assured), along with the exceptionally strong songwriting and the legendary stature of the title track, makes Ace of Spades the ideal Mot? rhead album if one were to choose one and only one studio album. It’s highly debatable whether Ace of Spaces is tops over the breakthrough Overkill, as the latter is more landmark because of its earlier release, and is somewhat rougher around the edges, too. Either way, Ace of Spades rightl… |

Activity Center $15.98 Where on their last album, 2005? s Fosbury, Tahiti 80 slicked up and focused their sound considerably and made a beautifully shiny modern dance-pop album, on 2009? s Activity Center you can hear right away that the band has shifted directions. ? 24 x 7 Boy? comes charging out of the gate sporting garage rock chord changes, crunchy guitars, and an exciting energy that is both surprising and welcome. Indeed, much of the album has a loose and fun feel that? s inspired by mid-’60s rock and pop, dominated by short, snappy tunes, and brightened up by the frequent use of parping organs, sunshiney vocal harmonies, and tambourines. That? s not to say that the group has made a slavishly obvious ? Sixties? throwback album. There are still plenty of modern textures and sounds everywhere, and there? s a sparse cleanliness to the group? s playing and arrangements that would have them thrown out of any garage. It? s the combination of eras, styles, and sounds, as well as the evocative nature of the song structures, Xavier Boyer? s sweetly heartfelt vocals, and energetic restraint the band utilizes that make the album work. It also helps that Boyer and the group have written their strongest batch of songs yet. There is no filler to speak of, and just about every song would sound great coming out of a jukebox. Or car speakers? or anywhere. The track list plays out like a classic rock check list that touches on doo wop (the lilting “Fire Escape”), laid-back country rock ( “Dream On”), funky horn section rock (“Come Around”), soft rock (“Tune In”), and a lot of catchy, Strokes-y guitar rock. The end result is a complete departure from Fosbury, and the rest of their previous output, too, but it? s a move that will please fans of very poppy, hook-filled tunes played with style, economy, and plenty of energy., Rovi |

Africa $16.98 In the early ’70s, the Southern African nation of Zambia was mired in political instability and dire poverty with little if any outside assistance, so the mere fact that the country had a rock music scene is remarkable, let alone that any recordings have survived of Zambian rock bands of the era. Amanaz were a five-piece combo from Lusaka who traveled to Chingola (one of Zambia’s biggest cities) and recorded an album titled Africa in 1973; almost 40 years after the fact, their sole album has finally made its way to the West. On first listen, what’s most surprising about Africa is that most of it doesn’t sound especially “African”; this music is based in deep, bluesy grooves (anchored by bassist Jerry Mausala) with a strong psychedelic undercurrent and thick layers of fuzz guitar from Isaac Mpofu and John Kanyepa, and though flashes of traditional influences can be heard in Watson Lungu’s drumming and Keith Kabwe’s vocals, it’s clear that American and British rock of the late ’60s and early ’70s was what fueled Amanaz’s imagination. (Three songs are performed in the African language of Bemba, but the rest are in English.) If the flaws in the recording and mix tend to send the guitars into the distance and flatten out the sound of the rhythm section, Africa does confirm that Amanaz were a talented band with a unique and powerful style; “Amanaz,” “Making the Scene,” and “Big Enough” are tough, primal rock tunes full of raw and fuzzy lead guitar, “Khala My Friend” recalls Jimi Hendrix’s more introspective moments, and “Sunday Morning” and the title cut turn down the tempo without sacrificing the emotional force of the music. Amanaz were a group that eagerly embraced the music of the West, but just enough of their own sound and perspective comes through to make Africa compelling listening as well as a fascinating artifact of an almost unknown rock scene. It’s good enough to make the band’s short lifespan seem like a sad, almost tragic waste of talent and p… |

Agents of Fortune [Bonus Tracks] $16.98 If ever there were a manifesto for 1970s rock, one that prefigured both the decadence of the decade’s burgeoning heavy metal and prog rock excesses and the rage of punk rock, “This Ain’t the Summer of Love,” the opening track from Agents of Fortune, Blue ? yster Cult’s fourth album, was it. The irony was that while the cut itself came down firmly on the hard rock side of the fence, most of the rest of the album didn’t. Agents of Fortune was co-produced by longtime Cult record boss Sandy Pearlman, Murray Krugman, and newcomer David Lucas, and in addition, the band’s lyric writing was being done internally with help from poet-cum-rocker Patti Smith (who also sings on “The Revenge of Vera Gemini”). Pearlman, a major contributor to the band’s songwriting output, received a solitary credit while critic Richard Meltzer, whose words were prevalent on the Cult’s previous outings, was absent. The album yielded the band’s biggest single with “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,” a multitextured, deeply melodic soft rock song with psychedelic overtones, written by guitarist Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser. The rest of the album is ambitious in that it all but tosses aside the Cult’s proto-metal stance and instead recontextualizes their entire stance. It’s still dark, mysterious, and creepy, and perhaps even more so, it’s still rooted in rock posturing and excess, but gone is the nihilistic biker boogie in favor of a more tempered — indeed, nearly pop arena rock — sound that gave Allen Lanier’s keyboards parity with Dharma’s guitar roar, as evidenced by “E.T.I.,” “Debbie Denise,” and “True Confessions.” This is not to say that the Cult abandoned their adrenaline rock sound entirely. Cuts like “Tattoo Vampire” and “Sinful Love” have plenty of feral wail in them. The 2001 remastered edition contains four bonus cuts: an early version of “Fire of Unknown Origin” and unreleased demo versions of “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,” “Sally,” and “Dance the Night Away.” Ultimatel… |

Ain’t Got No Home: The Best of Clarence Frogman Henry $9.99 Scoring an unexpected novelty hit with the title track in 1956, Henry disappeared from the charts for four years before roaring back with two smashes in the early ’60s, “(I Don’t Know Why) But I Do” and “You Always Hurt the One You Love.” Actually, Clarence recorded a fair number of singles for Chess’ Argo subsidiary between 1956 and 1964 in the relaxed New Orleans R&B styles of his big hits. Ain’t Got No Home includes 18 of these sides, most of which were previously unavailable on U.S. album. Henry developed slightly over the course of his career, adding beefier horn sections that occasionally reached back to the spirit of Dixieland. Crescent City legends like saxophonist Lee Allen and pianists Allen Toussaint and Paul Gayton crop up on these sessions; when Henry traveled to Memphis for a session, he was backed by the all-star band of Bill Justis (guitar), Boots Randolph (sax), and Floyd Cramer (piano). A bit more eccentric and unpredictable than Fats Domino, not as contemporary or inventive as, say, Lee Dorsey, Henry’s vocals were consistently warm and humorous, his recordings always polished. That said, the hits remain the standouts on this collection. The rest is pleasant and fun, but don’t vary much from the prototype or cause exceptional interest. A couple tracks worth noting are “I Love You, Yes I Do,” an R&B ballad subsequently covered by several acts during the ’60s, and the 1964 single “Long Lost and Worried,” written by a young Dr. John. The informative booklet includes a neat photo of Clarence with the Beatles, ironic considering that the British Invasion made types like Clarence an anachronism. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |

Alcohol Fueled Brewtality Live!! $17.98 Former Ozzy Osbourne axe-slinger Zakk Wylde rose to international guitar acclaim for the better part of the 1990s after helping co-author Ozzy’s No Rest for the Wicked, No More Tears, and Ozzmosis. From there, Wylde formed Pride and Glory, a Southern-fried combo that released a disc and then yielded the hammer and thunder of Black Label Society, whose incorrigible, heavyweight riffs and rhythms are showcased here on the band’s completely live, un-overdubbed Alcohol Fueled Brewtality Live!! Most of the material resides somewhere between the chugging, lugubrious redneck metal of Pantera and labelmates Crowbar, and the more Southern approach of latter-day Corrosion of Conformity — in other words, super-heavy, down-tuned riffage. What obviously sets this apart is Wylde’s lightning-fast leads and sheer six-string ability. The songs may be little more than basic collections of riffs, and Wylde far too often entreats the crowd to “make some f*cking noise!” but this is a testosterone-fueled sound often rejected by the mainstream press and heartily embraced by an aggressive listenership. Black Label Society does this as well as anyone out there, and it’s heartening to see four guys on a stage hammering it out, riff by riff, beat by beat. Add Wylde’s raw, bluesy baritone — at times reminiscent of Jerry Cantrell or Layne Staley — on top of that, and you’ve got a hearty meal. The second disc treats the listener to five slightly quieter, somewhat acoustic tunes, including a cover of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold.” ~ Patrick Kennedy, Rovi |

Amen Corner $16.98 Railroad Earth made its name on the jam band circuit with their hard to classify amalgamation of bluegrass, folk, Celtic, country, jazz, and rock, although the band itself says they’re acoustic rockers. There’s no denying that they rock hard, but on Amen Corner they sound most like a country band with a bluegrass accent. Todd Sheaffer the band’s lead singer and main songwriter has a pleasant country/folk/singer/songwriter voice and a knack for crafting subtle melodies that give the rest of the band — Tim Carbone, fiddle, John Skehan, mandolin, Andy Goessling, guitar, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, penny whistle, and sax, Carey Harmon, drums and percussion, and standup bass man Johnny Grubb — plenty of room to stretch out. Skehan’s mandolin and Carbone’s fiddle play a beautiful harmonic hook to open “The Forecast,” a tune that talks about a coming storm but Skehan’s mandolin sprinkles that track with flurries of shimmering, sunshiney notes. “All Alone” sounds a bit like the Band with a slow, mournful backbeat, lonesome banjo, and Sheaffer’s keening vocal. It sounds like a prayer offered by a man with no hope of being answered by friend, lover or god. Goessling’s dobro adds slow wailing notes to complement the music’s bluesy, hopeless vibe. “You Never Know” sounds like the last song of the night at a dusty honky tonk full of lonely men. It has a sad singalong chorus and the playing remains understated until Carbone’s fiddle and Sheaffer’s wordless yodel drive it home with a jaunty, if desperate coda. “Been Down This Road Before” has a nice bouncy bluegrass feel to counter its melancholy melody with a lyric of lost love staggering through the drunken shadows of the early morning hours. “Right in Tune” is an ode to true love that doesn’t ignore the bumps in the highway, but celebrates the feeling you get when the sun is bright and everything’s in tune. Goessling’s dobro and Carbone’s fiddle lift your spirits with their breezy instrumental flights. The alb… |

American Bullfighters $8.69 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Joseph Patrick “Joe” Escalante (born January 30, 1963) is an American musician, record label owner, radio host, film and music video director, and amateur matador, as well as a former television executive and entertainment lawyer. He is most widely known as the bassist for the punk rock band The Vandals, the owner of their record label Kung Fu Records, and the host of Barely Legal Radio on the Los Angeles/Orange County radio station Indie 103.1 FM. Escalante was born in Long Beach, California to a Mexican father and Irish mother and grew up in Rossmoor, California, an unincorporated area of Orange County. As a teenager he learned to play drums and began performing in local garage bands. After graduating from Los Alamitos High School in Orange County, Escalante received his Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA where he specialized in Old Norse. After doing graduate work at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík, he entered Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and received his Juris Doctor, specializing in anti-trust litigation. In 1980, at age 17, Escalante joined the punk rock band The Vandals, becoming their first permanent drummer. He would remain the sole constant member of the band throughout the rest of their career. They released their debut EP Peace Thru Vandalism in 1982 through Epitaph Records. In 1984 Escalante and the other band members appeared in the Penelope Spheeris film Suburbia and released their first album When in Rome Do as the Vandals. In 1987 they appeared in another Spheeris film, Dudes. By 1989 Escalante had moved from the drums into the bass guitar position, and fluctuations in the band’s membership had left him as the only member remaining from the original recording lineup. In order to continue the band, … More: |

Are You Experienced [CD/DVD] $14.99 On Are You Experienced — one of the most stunning debuts in rock history and one of the definitive albums of the psychedelic era — Jimi Hendrix synthesized various elements of the cutting edge of 1967 rock into music that sounded both futuristic and rooted in the best traditions of rock, blues, pop, and soul. It was his mind-boggling guitar work, of course, that got most of the ink, building upon the experiments of British innovators like Jeff Beck and Pete Townshend to chart new sonic territories in feedback, distortion, and sheer volume. It wouldn’t have meant much, however, without his excellent material, whether psychedelic frenzy (“Foxey Lady,” “Manic Depression,” “Purple Haze”), instrumental freak-out jams (“Third Stone from the Sun”), blues (“Red House,” “Hey Joe”), or tender, poetic compositions (“The Wind Cries Mary”) that demonstrated the breadth of his songwriting talents. Not to be underestimated were the contributions of drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding, who gave the music a rhythmic pulse that fused parts of rock and improvised jazz. Many of these songs are among Hendrix’s very finest; it may be true that he would continue to develop at a rapid pace throughout the rest of his brief career, but he would never surpass his first LP in terms of consistently high quality. The British and American versions of the album differed substantially when they were initially released in 1967; a subsequent reissue does everyone a favor by gathering all of the material from the two records in one place, adding a few B-sides from early singles as well. And the 2010 Legacy Edition adds a short documentary DVD featuring interviews with Chas Chandler, Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding as well as Eddie Kramer in the studio with the multi-track masters. The footage with Kramer and the multi-tracks is absolutely fascinating as he isolates different parts of “Purple Haze,” “May This Be Love,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” and “Are You Experienc… |

Arizona Motel $17.98 Frontman and co-founder Chris Gaffney’s untimely death in April 2008 ensures that Arizona Motel is the final release from this rootsy country-soul quintet. Unfortunately, the band was just starting to receive national recognition due to constant touring when Gaffney was diagnosed with liver cancer. At least they had time to record a final set and leave on a high note, as this album is a logical continuation of the two previous studio projects and one live disc. Gaffney is in fine form, singing the majority of the songs and infusing them with his heartfelt honesty. Opener “A Lot of Days Are Gone” is particularly affecting, especially in retrospect. On it, guitar-slinging shotgun rider Dave Gonzalez trades lead vocals as Gaff sings “There was always time, but now it’s slipped away” for a honky tonk ballad that can also be seen as a moving summary of Gaffney’s life. The legendary Dan Penn, who produced both previous studio sets, returns for five (of the 14) tracks, and he wrote two of those, including the closing “Break Free,” which features one of Gaffney’s most emotional vocals. The rest are credited to the band, which keeps the sound appropriately stripped down yet not raw. The twangy R&B approach is best captured on the ballad “Ordinary Soul,” a weeper that hits the sweet spot between genres as effectively as any in the group’s catalog. It’s highlighted by guest Joe Terry’s (Dave Alvin, the Skeletons) piano, a subtle yet essential addition to the majority of these songs. The members get a rare chance to solo on “Light It Again Charlie,” the only instrumental and one of the few instances where Gonzalez opens up on guitar. “Soul Mountain” balances between country, blues, and gospel on an upbeat shuffle offset by the rest of the typically slower tunes. A few covers highlighted by Connie Smith’s “I’ll Come Running” and Hank Williams’ “When You’re Tired of Breaking Other Hearts” pepper the disc, and Gaffney dips into George Jones’ expressive territory… |

Art of Two Line Improvisation $140.23 This collection of etudes, written during the 1970’s, was composed as a reult of Jimmy Wyble’s explorations into the musical worlds of counterpoint, harmony and chord melody improvisation for the jazz guitar. The right and left hand fingerings presented in this book were also developed as techniques needed to improvise jazz in two lines. Jimmy uses very standard jazz guitar chord shapes in these etudes; however, these shapes move through the harmony in lines rather than block chord structures. This broken chord technique creates a unique contrapuntal sound that separates Jimmy from the rest of the fingerstyle jazz guitar world. It is hoped that jazz and classical guitarists playing and working through these etudes will see many familiar chord shapes moving in new ways and creating new sounds. These new harmonic sounds combined with beautiful melodies will inspire any quitarist to new levels of musical creativity. Written in notation and tablature. 92 pages. |

Axl Badwater Capricorn Electric Bass Guitar Crackle Brown/White $217.49 The Badwater Capricorn electric bass has all of the custom-shop vibe of a vintage bass without the huge price tag. Each bass is hand-distressed with Axl’s award-winning Badwater finishes, so every single instrument is one-of-a-kind just like you! The original design of the Capricorn bass combines classic elements with modern appointments to appeal to players who appreciate vintage style but want a bass that sets them apart from the rest. The Badwater Capricorn Bass (AJ-820) has an offset alder body, a maple neck, and rosewood fretboard. The industry-standard 34 scale length helps ensure excellent tone and intonation, while two single-coil EMG-designed alnico pickups provide round low end with plenty of midrange punch. Independent volume controls for each pickup make it easy to dial in a range of tones, from warm and fat to crisp and aggressive. The antiqued two-piece pickguard is reminiscent of classic designs, but adds a subtle modern edge, and the vintage-style bridge and elephant ear tuners complete the vibe of a bass that bridges the gap between vintage and modern.Distressed, solid alder double-cutaway body Maple neck Rosewood fretboard 2 EMG-designed single coil alnico pickups Antiquated hardware with vintage-style bridge 34 scale length Two-piece pickguard Elephant ear tuners |

Baby Snakes $25.99 This short but delectably sweet release is for most intents and purposes the soundtrack to the Frank Zappa concert film of the same name. Both were captured on location at New York City’s Palladium (formerly the Academy of Music) in 1977, during the artist’s brief yearly residency in the Big Apple in and around Halloween. By the time of these concerts, Zappa was embroiled in all manner of unpleasantness with Warner Bros. Records — a fact not lost to listeners as he comments upon their tumultuous relationship during some off the cuff dialogue with Terry Bozzio (percussion/vocals), as heard on “Titties and Beer.” That behind-the-scenes drama certainly didn’t best the perpetually resilient Zappa as he, Bozzio, Adrian Belew (guitar/vocals), Ed Mann (percussion), Patrick O’Hearn (bass), Tommy Mars (keyboards/vocals), Peter Wolf (keyboards), and vintage Mothers of Invention member Roy Estrada (not so sexually aroused gas mask/vocals) are joined by some of “New York’s finest crazy persons” for half an hour-plus of musical madness as only Zappa could deliver. The “Intro Rap” features a brief dressing-room dialogue between Zappa and one of his longtime enthusiasts who just happens to be Warren Cuccurullo. If the name sounds familiar, it might be because he would serve a tenure in Zappa’s late-’70s lineup as a guitarist before becoming a co-founding member of Missing Persons alongside other Zappa alumni Bozzio and O’Hearn, prior to settling into the re-formed Duran Duran in the mid-’80s and 1990s. Although the title track, “Baby Snakes,” is essentially the same studio version that graced 1979’s Sheik Yerbouti, the rest of the material is live. “Black Page, No. 2″ is a jaunty instrumental that Zappa had composed specifically with Bozzio in mind. It then developed into a full-blown ensemble piece, and in the context of both the film and aural companion was used to accompany an enforced recreational audience-participatory dance contest. “Jones Crusher” is a hard-… |

Back Breaker $13.99 On the third full-length by the Showdown, 2008’s Back Breaker, the fun-lovin’ lads from Tennessee add some mythology to their metal, as each of the album’s 11 tracks goes by two titles — one that is straight out of Greek mythology, and another that is much more of the metal variety. Musically, the band still touches upon all the prerequisites of most up-and-coming metal bands roaming the earth circa the early 21st century — Iron Maiden-like guitar bits, Metallica’s chug-chug riffery, Pantera-esque shouted vocals, etc. Back Breaker is one fierce beast from start to finish, especially on such brutal selections as “[Hephaestus] The Hammer of the Gods,” “[Achilles] The Backbreaker,” and “[Aries] I Am Vengeance.” There may not be a lot to musically differentiate this quartet from the rest of the metal pack, but Back Breaker does certainly succeed in capturing the roaring power of the Showdown. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi |

Bad Bad One $3.56 On her Gold Circle Records debut album Bad Bad One, singer-songwriter Meredith Brooks immerses listeners in resonant waves of pop and soul-steeped rock ‘n’ roll. Featuring twelve diverse original compositions, the new album finds Meredith reinventing herself while retaining the engaging musical sensibilities that have made her one of contemporary pop’s most acclaimed performers. Ever since she exploded on the scene with her multi-platinum 1997 debut album Blurring The Edges and the worldwide hit single Bitch, Meredith has earned the praise of the music industry’s toughest critics. Indeed, she ranks among a handful of female guitarists to grace the cover of the trade magazine Guitar Player. Never one to rest on her laurels, Meredith ups the creative ante on Bad Bad One. She wrote or co-wrote all twelve songs and produced the album with David Darling. Taking hands-on creativity to new levels, Meredith engineered, edited and programmed much of the album, in addition to playing all rhythm and lead guitars. The result is a lovingly rendered self-portrait that reveals previously unknown aspects of Meredith’s musical character. For her part, Meredith describes Bad Bad One as unafraid –a reference to the fearless creativity that fuels her new recording. |

Band-Stop Filter $46.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! In signal processing, a band-stop filter or band- rejection filter is a filter that passes most frequencies unaltered, but attenuates those in a specific range to very low levels. It is the opposite of a band-pass filter. A notch filter is a band-stop filter with a narrow stopband (high Q factor). Notch filters are used in live sound reproduction (Public Address systems, also known as PA systems) and in instrument amplifier (especially amplifiers or preamplifiers for acoustic instruments such as acoustic guitar, mandolin, bass instrument amplifier, etc.) to reduce or prevent feedback, while having little noticeable effect on the rest of the frequency spectrum. Other names include ‘band limit filter’, ‘T-notch filter’, ‘band-elimination filter’, and ‘band-reject filter’. |
