What is the best Guitar Amp Head and cab to buy?

Looking to spend around £1000 for both together… I usually play Rock music. I like Orange and Marshall amps generally, but im open to anything new!

Hello there,

While your budget is pretty good, you probably won’t get a vintage Marshall for that. Even used, they still cost. A good substitute is the Marshall DSL. Those have been around for a while and you can get a good used for within your budget. The new Marshall MG series 4×12 cabs should not have the Marshall name on them. Look for a used 1960 cab; it will sound so much better.

Something else to consider? Have you ever tried a B-52? They make a pretty darn good tube head.

Here is the amp in a 2×12

By the way, B-52 makes a good solid state head that is dirt cheap.

I have no objection to the B-52 4×12 cab, but I don’t use one. I have a vintage Marshall 1960 cab that I loaded with a pair of Eminence speakers and a pair of Carvin British Series speakers (the old made in the US ones, not the new made in China crap) that I use with my B-52.
Later,

Hello again,
I do agree with Lucasman (as usual). There is no absolute best. I did not intend to imply such. These are just heads that I think are good values for the price. The brands he named all have some very good heads. However, most of the very good ones will be outside your budget.

If any artist deserved a hagiography it was Jimi Hendrix, and Joe Boyd’s 1973 “authorized” tribute adequately sanctifies the legend. Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, and Germaine Greer are all wheeled out to wax lyrical ab…

Orange Micro Terror - Guitar Amp Head

Orange Micro Terror – Guitar Amp Head

$149

Orange Amplification launches at Winter NAMM the Micro Terror ? their smallest Terror ever! Building on the winning recipe of the rest of the popular Terror series, the Micro Terror retains the beautiful unpretentious design, delivering a classic Orange sound way bigger than it looks, with a size and weight making it the most portable Terror yet! The Micro Terror has a single 12AX7 pre-amp tube with 20 watts RMS of solid-state output. It is powered via a 15 volt DC supplier (international PSU included), features auxiliary input for MP3 player or CD, and can be plugged into to any speaker cabinet with 4 ohm or greater impedance (even a 4 x 12) and you will be ready to rock. With a high tensile steel case it is built to the same rugged specifications as the other members of the Terror family and is incredibly compact and highly portable. This is a true Orange Amp classic, with masses of vintage British character, clean crunch and full-on overdrive sounds. Matching the new Micro Terror is the launch of the new PPC108 cab (pictured below), ideal for building your own mini-terror stack and a perfect partner for the Micro Terror. The scaled down cab, is available to purchase separately and its 8?speaker delivers a punchy tone and sound that has to heard to be believed. Like all Orange speaker cabs it is built to last, with rugged construction and attractive styling Orange?s Tolex and basketweave grill cloth, complete with the legendary crest and badge.

1957 Les Paul Custom 2PU Vintage Original Spec Electric Guitar (Ebony w/Bigsby)

1957 Les Paul Custom 2PU Vintage Original Spec Electric Guitar (Ebony w/Bigsby)

$4699

The introduction of Gibson's Les Paul Model in 1952 marked the beginning of the electric solid body guitar era. The launch of the company's "deluxe" version two years later the Les Paul Custom cemented Gibson's legacy as the industry leader. Nicknamed the "Fretless Wonder" for its low frets, or "Black Beauty" for its rich, contrasting color, the Les Paul Custom was introduced at the same time as the Gibson Les Paul Junior and represented the ultimate in Gibson solid body design at the time.Body Several characteristics continued to set the Les Paul Custom apart from Gibsons other models, including its beautiful gloss ebony finish, which had been one of Les Pauls two original color choices (the other was gold) for the Les Paul Model he felt a guitar players hands would be more visible to audiences against a black background. Additionally, the Les Paul Custom featured a thicker body design and seven-ply body binding on both the front and back of the guitar to create a visually striking instrument, along with a multi-bound headstock with a prominent five-piece split diamond patterned inlay of genuine mother of pearl a design that still graces every Les Paul Custom made today. And while maple tops would come to define the Les Paul Model and subsequent Les Paul Standard, the body of the Les Paul Custom was made entirely from a solid piece of mahogany, with no added maple top. This difference gave the Les Paul Custom a much warmer overall sound, but with incredible sustain and rich, balanced tone.Near-perfect Recreation Todays 1957 Les Paul Custom from Gibson Custom is presented with all the historically accurate appointments and legendary tone of the original. No detail is overlooked, including a solid, non-weight relieved mahogany body with carved mahogany top. The headstock is made from Holly head veneer, as opposed to fiber, just like it was in 1957, and the vintage-style kidney tulip tuners are mounted in a straight line

1959 SLP Super Lead Plexi Guitar Amplifier Head

1959 SLP Super Lead Plexi Guitar Amplifier Head

$2349.99

THIS IS IT! The Marshall 1959SLP 100 Watt Super Lead Plexiglas head of the late ’60s/early ’70s, as used by countless classic bands, reissued in all its glory. The 1959SLP has been in production since the late sixties but with various electrical and cosmetic changes happening along the way. The models produced in the late 1960s/early 1970s however, were the ones that most tone gurus regarded as the finest examples. After much searching Marshall managed to track down two amps from this period that were the finest they’d heard, packed with all the tone and rich velvet overdrive. Marshall gave these two tone monsters to their guitar-playing R&D experts and left them to create a reissue that was so authentic that they couldn’t tell the difference. They succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest dreams – the 1959SLP reissue came to life! Output (RMS): 100W Pre-amp Valves: 3 x ECC83 Power Amp Valves: 4 x EL34 EQ: 3-band Presence Control Dimensions (mm): 750 x 310 x 210 Weight (Kg): 20.5

The 1960 Les Paul Standard comes in a VOS finish and includes the standard Gibson Custom case, custom care kit and Certificate of Authenticity. HistoryIn hindsight, its certainly difficult to fathom Gibsons Les Paul Standard of the late 1950s and early 1960s not appealing to the masses. Yet thats exactly what happened, even as Gibson officials tried desperately to fine tune the instrument and make it suitable to the general guitar-playing public. Sadly, their efforts proved unsuccessful as the Les Paul Standard was shelved midway through 1960 to make way for a new design that featured beveled edges, twin cutaways and a much thinner body the guitar known today as

For their album 3, the self-proclaimed Godfathers of Groove mix it up a bit more within the soul-jazz arena, playing interpretations of pop tunes, some straight-ahead jazz, originals, and in essence the funky music that is at the core of their identities. Bassist Jerry Jemmott was the special guest on their previous album, but here it is the veteran jazz saxophonist Bill Easley, who plays on selected cuts with his usual professional verve, panache, and solid, fluid lines. Guitarist Grant Green, Jr. is coming into his own as heard more clearly, while organist Reuben Wilson and drummer Bernard Purdie continue to stake their estimable reputations on the chitlin circuit music they grew up with. When the band chooses to swing, as on the basic 12-bar groove “My Blues” with its fleet organ solo amidst Purdie’s shuffle beat, or the straight-ahead, uncomplicated, and simple “Down Hill” with Easley’s deft tenor leading the way, there’s little stopping them. A very, very, very slow take of “Stella by Starlight” gives Green Jr. an opportunity to emulate his famous father’s unmistakable snappy technique, pulled off the bone and well done. His singing, a bit gritty, crops up on versions of “Light My Fire” and “What’s Going On,” admirable but not a strong suit. Where Wilson shines is his ability to either shred solos and melodies, as on the head-nodding groove of the delightfully rendered “The Funkster” or on the solid-sending feed he provides during “Groove On” above Green’s overdubbed guitar parts. Of course, there is no more readily identifiable drummer than Purdie when he shakes and bakes the clockwork rhythms of “Monkey Milk,” in an Average White Band “Pick Up the Pieces” mode, or adds his personal and widely copied light contemporary funk to a modified version of “Autumn Leaves.” Purdie also proves he can swing with the best of jazz drummers, an aspect of his personality and career not always given due credit. This is a good recording with many high mo…

When one first glances at the cover of Casey Driessen’s 3D, it’s difficult to know what to expect. Driessen’s red hair is brushed back, and he’s wearing these funky 3D glasses with a “3″ on one lens and a “D” on the other. From this info, one might be prepared for spacey electronic music or perhaps a surrealistic singer/songwriter. But the final clue at the bottom on the cover photo is the head of a fiddle, Driessen’s instrument of choice, which may or may not lead one to guess 3D’s dominant musical style: progressive instrumental Celtic music. Listeners have probably never heard “Sally in the Garden” arranged with drums, programming, and an electric sruti box, though the addition of Jerry Douglas’ dobro, Tim O’Brien’s bouzouki, and Driessen’s fiddle add stable elements. It’s as though the players started with a fairly traditional base of acoustic instruments and then inserted percussion, progressive material, and the occasional electronic element to spice things up. Even on more conservative — instrumentally speaking — tunes like Driessen’s “The Confusion Before Dreams” proves quite compelling, and the vocal numbers, often a distraction on primarily instrumental albums, are fun. There’s a funky take on “Sugarfoot Rag” with Driessen’s ultra-cool vocal and Darrell Scott spunky guitar work. While a number of semi-progressive musicians like O’Brien have gotten lots of credit for pushing bluegrass and Celtic in new directions, the results (as with O’Brien’s dual release in 2005) seem rather tepid compared to 3D. This is fun music that will probably offend a few traditionalists while letting everyone else know that the old music can grow in exciting and unpredictable ways. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi

801 provided Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera with one of his most intriguing side projects. Although the band only played three gigs in August and September 1976, this album captures a night when everything fell right into place musically. That should only be expected with names like Eno and Simon Phillips in the lineup. (Still, the lesser-known players — bassist Bill MacCormick, keyboardist Francis Monkman, and slide guitarist Lloyd Watson — are in exemplary form, too.) The repertoire is boldly diverse, opening with “Lagrima,” a crunchy solo guitar piece from Manzanera. Then the band undertakes a spacey but smoldering version of “Tomorrow Never Knows”; it’s definitely among the cleverest of Beatles covers. Then it’s on to crisp jazz-rock (“East of Asteroid”), atmospheric psych-pop (“Rongwrong”), and Eno’s tape manipulation showcase, “Sombre Reptiles.” And that’s only the first five songs. The rest of the gig is no less audacious, with no less than three Eno songs — including a frenetic “Baby’s on Fire,” “Third Uncle,” and “Miss Shapiro”’s dense, syllable-packed verbal gymnastics. There’s another unlikely cover of the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” while Manzanera turns in another typically gutsy instrumental performance on “Diamond Head.” This album marks probably one of the last times that Eno rocked out in such an unself-consciously fun fashion, but that’s not the only reason to buy it: 801 Live is a cohesive document of an unlikely crew who had fun and took chances. Listeners will never know what else they might have done if their schedules had been less crowded, but this album’s a good reminder. ~ Ralph Heibutzki, Rovi

Norwegian avant-garde quartet Supersilent lost drummer Jarle Vespestad at the end of 2008, and rather than replace him (their music having never been particularly rhythm-driven), they opted to continue on as a trio. However, in so doing they all abandoned their own musical comfort zones to one degree or another. 9 was recorded over the course of three days at Henie Onstad arts center, outside Oslo, and finds each of the three remaining members — Arve Henriksen, best-known as a trumpeter; Helge Sten (electronics, keyboards, guitar); and keyboardist St? le Storl? kken — playing Hammond organ and nothing else. This could be a recipe for ultimate tedium, but it’s not. These guys stray far away from the Jimmy Smith/Larry Young school of Hammond playing, and instead head into a subterranean cave network of near-ambient interplay reminiscent of classic, early Tangerine Dream titles like Zeit and Atem. The disc’s four minimally titled tracks (“9.1″ through “9.4″) offer lots of oozing and throbbing, with just a few hints of melody here and there. Highly recommended even to Supersilent newcomers. ~ Phil Freeman, Rovi

A Drug Problem That Never Existed

$16.98

Between Mondo Generator’s debut, 2000’s Cocaine Rodeo, and their sophomore effort, 2003’s A Drug Problem That Never Existed, the stakes had been raised considerably. Leader Nick Oliveri’s main gig, Queens of the Stone Age, had finally broken on through to the mainstream with their stellar 2002 effort, Songs for the Deaf, so expectations for Drug Problem definitely ran high. But with a stellar supporting cast that contained much of the QOTSA posse (Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, Joey Castillo, etc.) and equipped with a strong set of raw, Mot? rhead-worthy material, Oliveri hit the nail right on the head. If you’re expecting an album as diverse as the average QOTSA release, you may be disappointed. But if it’s an album chock-full of the aggro punk metal that became Oliveri’s trademark on R and Songs for the Deaf (“Tension Head,” “Six Shooter,” etc.), then you’re in luck, as evidenced by such standouts as “Here We Come,” “So High, So Low,” and “F.Y. I’m Free.” That said, Oliveri does sneak in a surprise or two, such as the acoustic guitar-based, Wild West-sounding “All I Can Do” and “Detroit,” a heartfelt tribute to Oliveri’s late grandfather. But the best is saved for last, as ex-Screaming Trees/part-time QOTSA frontman Mark Lanegan guests on the poignant album closer, “Four Corners.” A Drug Problem That Never Existed proves once and for all that there’s much more to Oliveri than merely being a bass player. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

 A Place to Bury Strangers

A Place to Bury Strangers

$19.98

From the opening blast of overdriven guitars and hyperkinetic drums it’s apparent A Place to Bury Strangers, self-described “loudest band in New York,” want to pummel you into submission with their unique take on white noise-derived guitar splendor, but then a hypnotic single-string riff takes over to briefly deliver a respite from the assault, recalling the classic era of shoegaze. The swirling atmosphere of guitar feedback and reverb-drenched vocals immediately bring to mind the most obvious comparison: vintage Jesus and Mary Chain. And while the Mary Chain circa Psychocandy evoked the Beach Boys on bad acid or the the Shirelles gigging poolside at the Manson family compound, A Place to Bury Strangers also evoke a host of noisy early-’90s British bands like My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Ride, Chapterhouse, Pale Saints, and the Catherine Wheel without sounding exactly like any of them. These bands knew how to cloak their essentially straightforward and anthemic rock songs in layers upon layers of guitar effects to lend an air of psychedelia and psychosis to what without that noisy dressing would strip down to candy-coated pop confections. And what A Place to Bury Strangers indeed do is write pop songs, with simple, traditional arrangements, primarily in slightly menacing minor keys, and saturated with their own unique brand of sonic mayhem. This is facilitated by the fact that their guitarist/singer designs his own effects pedals at his day job, allowing for a trademark-able and wide variety of signature bombastic sounds (he also does custom work for illustrious members of other similarly minded space rockers). Many songs, like the obvious single “To Fix the Gash in Your Head,” feature a pile-driving drum machine enhancement which adds to the multiple layers and recalls a time when dark dream pop (Curve, Slowdive, the Telescopes) and dancefloor-friendly goth rock (Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, early New Order) were club mainstays. And aside from the lone d…

A Rush of Blood to the Head

A Rush of Blood to the Head

$11.94

After touring in support of their debut album, Parachutes, Coldplay was personally and professionally exhausted. Frontman Chris Martin insisted he was dry; by the time they closed their European tour in summer 2001, he hadn’t written a song in months. The U.K. music press immediately pounced on the idea of Coldplay calling it quits, but somewhere lurked the beauty of “In My Place.” The spirit and soul of this ballad allowed Coldplay to pull it together to make a second album. What came from such anguish and inquisition was A Rush of Blood to the Head. Coldplay has surely let it all go on this record. Acoustics are drowned out by Jon Buckland’s riveting guitar work, and vocally, Martin has sharpened his falsetto, refining his haunting delivery. It’s a strong album; you can feel, hear, and touch the blood, sweat, and tears behind each song, and that’s exactly what Coldplay was going for. Co-producer Ken Nelson and mixer Mark Pythain (the team behind the blissful beauty of Parachutes) allowed Coldplay to make an album that’s initially inaccessible, but that’s what makes it intriguing. Lush melodies and a heartbreak behind the songs are there, but also a newfound confidence. From the delicate, shimmery classic “In My Place” to the piano surge of “The Scientist,” Coldplay exudes an honest passion. The disco haze of “Daylight” and the love-drunk ballad “Green Eyes” are divine examples of solid lyrical arrangements, but “Politik” and the stunning guitar-driven “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face” project a nervy edge to the band. Echoes of early post-punk showcase Coldplay’s ballsy musicianship. Don’t fret — it’s not exactly rock & roll, but Radiohead, Echo & the Bunnymen, and the Smiths aren’t exactly rock & roll either, and they’re well loved. “Yellow” didn’t follow the rock formula, but it sold well, and similarly A Rush of Blood to the Head might not instantly grab listeners, but it’s not tailored that way. It pushes you to look beyond dreamy vocals for…

 A Song for All Seasons

A Song for All Seasons

$13.98

The next to last album by Renaissance as a full-time, ongoing group, A Song for All Seasons was a courageous effort in its time, wearing its classically based progressive rock colors proudly on its sleeve amid the punk and new wave booms that were sweeping across the musical landscape. Vocalist Annie Haslam and pianist John Tout generated some memorably beautiful moments, ably supported by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor/arrangerHarry Rabinowitz. The first two tracks, “Opening Out” and “The Day of the Dreamer,” ultimately promise a little more in the way of classically based lyricism than the album delivered; and the harder rocking moments are only fitfully interesting, despite the best efforts of bassist Jon Camp and guitarist Michael Dunford. But the pop tracks here, most notably “Northern Lights,” “Back Home Once Again,” and the acoustic guitar-driven “Closer Than Yesterday” are appealing on a level that was mostly new to the group. A few more numbers like those, interspersed with the more ambitious works on this album, and Renaissance might have found that wider following that always eluded them. But ultimately the album pulls in one or two too many directions at once, especially on the moody “She Is Love.” For a finale, the title track, “A Song for All Seasons,” (clocking in at almost 11 minutes) plunges us back into heavily orchestrated art-rock head-first and several yards deep, and succeeds better than most of the group’s ambitious suites and song cycles of the second half of the ’70s. The album has some gorgeous moments, but coming out at the end of the ’70s, it was timed about as poorly as any LP ever issued, in terms of finding an audience — which doesn’t stop modern audiences from savoring its appeal or those moments, three or four decades on. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

AC15HTVH Hand Wired Guitar Amplifier Head

AC15HTVH Hand Wired Guitar Amplifier Head

$899

The AC15HTVH delivers all the great features of the AC15H1TV combo in a 8 or 16 ohm selectable head. Rather than just a typical reissue where a vintage amp is dusted off and copied, this amplifier, like the others forthcoming in the Heritage Collection, transports you through the golden age of VOX tone, combining the prized EF86 preamp channel of 1958 with the 1963 Top Boost channel all in one amplifier. Add in some modern tone shaping control enhancements and the result is perhaps the finest VOX amplifier in the company’s 50 year history. The EF86: The magical VOX tone. But what is it that makes EF86 based VOX amplifiers some of the most collectible in the world? Maybe its the way the amp naturally overdrives, almost breathing with a life of its own. Perhaps its the transparency of tone that flatters a premium quality guitar, or the way it dynamically responds to the subtlety of your picking. Or maybe its the raw power of the creamy distortion as you crank the amp all the way up. Whatever it is, there is an undeniable magic about this period of VOX amplification – an age when the most simple of circuits produced some of the most complex and musical of tones. Now in short supply, the EF86 Pentode tube is at the heart of this elusive tone. Fifty years later, the magic returns. The AC15H Head & Cab: A detailed look. The 15-watt AC15 Hand-wired head features two channels of unmistakable VOX tone driving a single 12 Celestion Alnico Blue speaker housed in a separate, matching speaker cab. The valve complement is made up of 1 x EF86, 3 x ECC83/12AX7, 2 x EL84, and 1 x EZ81 (rectifier). Channel 1 is the EF86 Preamp channel, and features two inputs wired in the traditional way providing a 6dB gain difference between them. A two-position BASS SHIFT switch is included, with position 1 voiced to the original vintage-correct bass response and position 2 voiced to tighten the bass response and reduce any muddiness during high volume use. He has written or co-written every song in the Alice In Chains catalog except for “Queen of the Rodeo “, “Hate to Feel “, “Angry Chair “, and “Head Creeps “. Jerry is currently on tour in North America supporting Alice In Chain’s first new studio album in over 14 years, Black Gives Way To Blue . Early life Cantrell noted in an interview that he was “raised on country music ” as a youth and that he admires the emotion conveyed in the genre. He also considers himself “half Yankee and half redneck .” However, hard rock music caught Cantrell’s interest predominantly, and he bought his first guitar in his mid teens. It wouldn’t be until the age of 17, however, that he began seriously playing the instrument. Cantrell would later cite musicians like Jimi Hendrix , Heart , Black Sabbath , and Queensrÿche as major influences. Cantrell attended junior high and high school in Spanaway, Washington and was a member of the high school choir which attended many state competitions. Cantrell was president of the choir in his senior year. The quartet would sing the national anthem at basketball games and win competitions with the highest marks achievable. According to Cantrell, his choir teacher and drama teacher were, early on, his two

With epithets pouring out of Blaze Bayley’s mouth about 13 minutes into the DVD, this crunchy batch of hard metal gushes from the screen in beautifully filmed movie-like form. The menacing image of the ex-Iron Maiden lead singer who fronted Wolfsbane as far back as 1988 on theLive Fast Die Fast album is in fine form on March 24, 2007 in Katowice, Poland for the Metalmania festival. The veteran may not be a household name, but his prowess is impressive and the DVD is full of fury and brimstone. Metal Mind Productions and MVD give Bayley the star treatment and he deserves it, both on the cover of the DVD and with a colorful eight-page insert chock-full of photos of bandmates Rich Newport on guitar, second guitarist Nick Bermudez, David Bermudez on bass, and Rico Banderra on drums. Sometimes the band runs away with the music, as on “Two Worlds Collide,” which could be the musicians playing on two different planets on a collision course, but since attitude and feeling is what this genre is all about, the chaos works to Bayley’s advantage. That tune is also on 2003’s As Live as It Gets from the band Blaze (totally different set of musicians from this outing) and an album with less than half of the songs overlapping due to the fact that Bayley has a very deep catalog. He calls the band “incredibly sexy,” but the fact is the lead vocalist could be a sad cross between Meat Loaf and Lemmy from Mot? rhead, definitely a frightening thought…you wouldn’t want to meet him in a dark alley, and that ominous and imposing look lends itself quite well to the music generated by this crew. “Kill and Destroy” smashes out of 2002’s Tenth Dimension album as do two other titles from this 15-song set, opening number “Speed of Light” and that disc’s title track. Metal Mind does a super job with these DVDs and this package contains an interview with Blaze, an interview with the band, photo gallery, desktop images, and all sorts of goodies including the bonus video “Hollow Head.”…

Countless fans have been introduced to Krishna Das through yoga classes, where his soothing rhythmic chants, preformed in a deep, rich timbre, complement instruction on the spiritual element of the exercise. Only those students inclined toward extra credit, though, are likely to know that the former Jeffrey “K.D.” Kagel, renamed Krishna Das after years of studying alongside his guru, Mahara ji, in India, is a one-time rock singer from Long Island, N.Y. All One, Krishna’s ninth CD, delivers inward-looking listeners that much closer to recognizing the chant master’s unlikely background on their own, though. Essentially an hour-long melodic recitation of the name Hare Krishna set to accompaniment that ranges from Indian to classical to rock in style, the disc makes use of several rock & roll heavy hitters. Co-produced with Walter Becker (Steely Dan), Jay Messina (Aerosmith), and David Nichtern (who wrote “Midnight at the Oasis”), All One finds Becker on bass, Nichtern on guitar, and Def Leppard’s Rick Allen on drums. Which accounts for why, even on more sedate tracks, a certain rock energy seeps through. That Krishna Das manages that influence without allowing the disc to become a mongrelized slab of meditation-lite — it’s quite listenable in a head-clearing sort of way — is a testament, maybe, to the concept that his burnished, entrancing voice comes from a place purer than most. ~ Tammy La Gorce, Rovi

 Anthology

Anthology

$25.99

Sony’s third anthology of Return to Forever guitarist Al di Meola’s Columbia Records years hits most of the bases and scores extra points by adding four previously unavailable live tracks that account for a whopping 40 minutes of playing time. The double disc features 16 songs from di Meola’s seven albums for the label from 1975-1983 and successfully covers highlights from the jazz guitar fusionist’s eclectic styles during his early career. Only 22 when his first solo album, Land of the Midnight Sun, was released, di Meola had already cut his teeth for three years with Chick Corea’s Return to Forever, and although his style owed a lot to Corea’s vision, he had already defined his sound. The guitarist’s precise attack, staccato playing, furious speed, and heavily percussive arrangements would serve him well throughout these formative years. Even though he was often criticized for playing too many notes (just listen to the frantic, head-spinning beginning of “Suite: Golden Dawn” from Land of the Midnight Sun), di Meola’s more subtle roots in Latin, flamenco, funk, and rock are evident in almost all of his work. He even incorporates strains of the world music that later became the dominant force in his recordings. Although there is evidence of a softer approach, the majority of Anthology concentrates on the hyperactive fret-hopping ability of the young di Meola as he tries to prove he’s the fastest guitarist in the world. Even on the acoustic, newly released live tracks from 1978 like the 11-minute “Medley: Short Tales from the Black Forest/Fantasia Suite for Two Guitars,” the results are anything but laid-back. Oddly, the disc does not include anything from di Meola’s two predominately unplugged trio albums, when he partnered with John McLaughlin and Paco de Luc? a for a tremendously successful guitar summit. With three tracks off Tour de Force: Live and another four from concerts in 1982 and 1978, this disc includes almost an hour of di Meola and his versatile…

 At His Best: Live

At His Best: Live

$17.98

Atlanta’s Landslide label only released two of Sean Costello’s four albums during his life, but has been the most aggressive at maintaining, and perhaps even elevating, his profile in the blues world with two posthumous collections. The first wrapped up some previously recorded tracks, both studio and live, with a smattering of rare material. This is the second and, as the title specifies, it captures Costello on-stage with 18 heretofore unavailable-on-CD performances. The audio varies wildly from near professional quality to what sounds like a pretty good cassette recording at Buddy Guy’s Legends club, but the playing is uniformly supercharged. Costello, who passed away on the eve of his 29th birthday in 2008, had toured relentlessly and really was at his best in front of an audience as these recordings, grabbed from 2000-2007 but never intended for release, clearly show. Along with his blistering blues guitar as evidenced on “T-Bone Boogie” and Magic Sam’s “All Your Love,” Costello loved soul and funk, and half of this collection features his versions of relatively obscure R&B material that feels as natural as the more rootsy Chicago blues he’s best known for. Covers of Bobby Womack’s “Check It Out,” the Tyrone Davis classic “Can I Change My Mind,” and Johnnie Taylor’s “Doing My Thing” crackle with tough, occasionally playful energy and enthusiasm. Blues fans naturally gravitate to Costello’s reverential yet fluid guitar work, but these songs show him to be a riveting singer with a gruff voice that sounded far older than his birth year would indicate. When he lets loose on Johnny Guitar Watson’s “Motor Head Baby,” he sounds possessed and his workout on Robert Ward’s “Peace of Mind” takes the original and shoots it full of adrenaline with a guitar solo that’s tense and brittle. He even gives the great Mike Bloomfield a run for his money when he tackles Bloomfield’s “You’re Killing My Love,” a tune he likely learned from Otis Rush’s version, and u…

 Atom Heart Mother

Atom Heart Mother

$18.98

Appearing after the sprawling, unfocused double-album set Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother may boast more focus, even a concept, yet that doesn’t mean it’s more accessible. If anything, this is the most impenetrable album Pink Floyd released while on Harvest, which also makes it one of the most interesting of the era. Still, it may be an acquired taste even for fans, especially since it kicks off with a side-long, 23-minute extended orchestral piece that may not seem to head anywhere, but is often intriguing, more in what it suggests than what it achieves. Then, on the second side, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Rick Wright have a song apiece, winding up with the group composition “Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast” wrapping it up. Of these, Waters begins developing the voice that made him the group’s lead songwriter during their classic era with “If,” while Wright has an appealingly mannered, very English psychedelic fantasia on “Summer 68,” and Gilmour’s “Fat Old Sun” meanders quietly before ending with a guitar workout that leaves no impression. “Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast,” the 12-minute opus that ends the album, does the same thing, floating for several minutes before ending on a drawn-out jam that finally gets the piece moving. So, there are interesting moments scattered throughout the record, and the work that initially seems so impenetrable winds up being Atom Heart Mother’s strongest moment. That it lasts an entire side illustrates that Pink Floyd was getting better with the larger picture instead of the details, since the second side just winds up falling off the tracks, no matter how many good moments there are. This lack of focus means Atom Heart Mother will largely be for cultists, but its unevenness means there’s also a lot to cherish here. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Snare:Start with the f5 about 2 inches above the head and aimed towards the center of the drum. For more rim effect, the f5 can be aimed less towards the center and more towards the rim. It is not uncommon for engineers to place the mic practically right on the drumhead to achieve a very tight, cracking sensation. Toms, congas:Similar to snare. For tighter sound and more attack place, the mic closer to the head. For more decay and overtones pull the mic further away from the head. Guitar cabs: The f5 can be placed within 1-2 inches of the grill cover at a 90 angle pointing directly into the speaker. Automatic

Automatic

$13.96

The Jesus and Mary Chain’s third studio album was a mixed bag, a touch rougher and more aggressive-sounding than Darklands, but still not the equivalent of Psychocandy for sheer kicks. Part of the problem was the actual studio setup; while soon-to-be superstar producer/engineer Alan Moulder did a great job on the sound, finding a way to mix thick guitar rumbles without sounding uncommercial, the fact was that the band was really just the brothers at this point. Like on Darklands, all drumming was courtesy of machines, and here the approach often felt monotonous; Bobby Gillespie’s approach, for better or worse, really was distinct and individual, fitting with the style of the band beautifully. Meanwhile, much of the bass was also created via keyboards, another unusual switch. When Automatic was on, though, it was on, especially courtesy of another blazingly brilliant single. If “Sidewalking” was a T. Rex homage, “Head On” paid tribute to rock’s eternal image of supercharged cool; one can almost smell the black leather as Jim Reid delivers the ultimate “Break on Through” lyric: “Makes you wanna feel/Makes you wanna try/Makes you wanna blow the stars from the sky.” The music sure didn’t hurt either; even the synth bass sounded perfectly right. Other songs, like the brawling “Blues From a Gun” and the aggro-sneer of “Her Way of Praying,” suggest a new energy on the part of all involved, though likely enough they came across better live in the end with the Reids’ then-touring band of the time. Meanwhile, there are definitely some sharp individual moments: the sudden massive feedback clang during the instrumental break on “Coast to Coast,” the “Sweet Jane”-inspired melody on the nicely moving “Halfway to Crazy,” and the hint of strings on the brief “Drop.” ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi

 BBC Sessions [Deluxe Edition] [2CD/1DVD]

BBC Sessions [Deluxe Edition] [2CD/1DVD]

$22.99

These are the recordings that Jimi Hendrix made for BBC radio in the late ’60s. As such, they’re loose, informal, and off-the-top-of-his-head improvisational fun. These versions of the hits “Foxey Lady,” “Fire,” two versions of “Purple Haze,” and “Hey Joe” stay surprisingly close to the studio versions, but the tone of Hendrix’s guitar on these is positively blistering and worth the price of admission alone. There’s also a lot of blues on this two-disc collection, and Hendrix’s versions of “Hoochie Coochie Man” (with Alexis Korner on slide guitar), “Catfish Blues,” “Killing Floor,” and “Hear My Train a Comin’” find him in excellent form. But perhaps the best example of how loosely conceived these sessions were are the oddball covers that Hendrix tackles, including Stevie Wonder’s “I Was Made to Love Her” (featuring Wonder on drums), Dylan’s “Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?,” the Beatles’ “Day Tripper,” and, in recognition of his immediate competition, Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love.” No lo-fi bootleg tapes here (everything’s from the original masters and gone over by Eddie Kramer), the music and sound are class-A all the way, making a worthwhile addition to anyone’s Hendrix collection. [The 2010 version contains another version of "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" from Top of the Pops as a bonus track as well as a DVD that tells the story of the BBC sessions featuring interviews with some of the original BBC producers and engineers. There is also a live version of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" and his legendary appearance on The Lulu Show.] ~ Cub Koda & Sean Westergaard, Rovi

 Bad as Me

Bad as Me

$17.98

Bad as Me is Tom Waits’ first collection of new material in seven years. He and Kathleen Brennan — wife, co-songwriter, and production partner — have, at the latter’s insistence, come up with a tight-knit collection of short tunes, the longest is just over four minutes. This is a quick, insistent, and woolly aural road trip full of compelling stops and starts. While he’s kept his sonic experimentation — especially with percussion tracks — Waits has returned to blues, rockabilly, rhythm & blues, and jazz as source material. Instead of sprawl and squall, we get chug and choogle. For “Chicago” — via Clint Maedgen’s saxes, Keith Richards’ (who appears sporadically here) and Marc Ribot’s guitars, son Casey Waits’ drums, dad’s banjo, percussion and piano, and Charlie Musselwhite’s harmonica (he appears numerous times here, too) — we get a 21st century take on vintage R&B. Indeed, one can picture Big Joe Turner fronting this clattering rush of grit and groove, and this album is all about groove. Augie Meyers appears on Vox organ and Flea on bass to guide Waits’ tablas and vocals on “Raised Right Men,” a 12-bar stagger filled with delightful lyrical clich? s from an America that has passed on into myth — Waits does nothing to de-mystify this; he just makes it greasy and danceable. The slow, spooky “Talking at the Same Time” is still in blues form albeit with ska-styled horns to make things more exotic, as Waits waxes about the current state of economic affairs. He showcases history’s circular nature as he bridges our national narrative from 1929-1941, and up to the present day: “Well it? s hard times for some/For others it? s sweet/Someone makes money when there? s blood in the street…Well we bailed out all the millionaires/They got the fruit/We got the rind…” Rockabilly rears its head on “Get Lost,” with David Hidalgo strutting a solid ’50s guitar snarl above the horns. Bad as Me [Deluxe Version]

Bad as Me [Deluxe Version]

$24.98

Band of Gypsys

Band of Gypsys

$16.98

Band of Gypsys was the only live recording authorized by Jimi Hendrix before his death. It was recorded and released in order to get Hendrix out from under a contractual obligation that had been hanging over his head for a couple years. Helping him out were longtime friends Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on the drums because the Experience had broken up in June of 1969, following a show in Denver. This rhythm section was vastly different from the Experience. Buddy Miles was an earthy, funky drummer in direct contrast to the busy, jazzy leanings of Mitch Mitchell. Noel Redding was not really a bass player at all but a converted guitar player who was hired in large part because Hendrix liked his hair! These new surroundings pushed Hendrix to new creative heights. Along with this new rhythm section, Hendrix took these shows as an opportunity to showcase much of the new material he had been working on. The music was a seamless melding of rock, funk, and R&B, and tunes like “Message to Love” and “Power to Love” showed a new lyrical direction as well. Although he could be an erratic live performer, for these shows, Hendrix was on — perhaps his finest performances. His playing was focused and precise. In fact, for most of the set, Hendrix stood motionless, a far cry from the stage antics that helped establish his reputation as a performer. Equipment problems had plagued him in past live shows as well, but everything was perfect for the Fillmore shows. His absolute mastery of his guitar and effects is even more amazing considering that this was the first time he used the Fuzz Face, wah-wah pedal, Univibe, and Octavia pedals on-stage together. The guitar tones he gets on “Who Knows” and “Power to Love” are powerful and intense, but nowhere is his absolute control more evident than on “Machine Gun,” where Hendrix conjures bombs, guns, and other sounds of war from his guitar, all within the context of a coherent musical statement. The solo on “Machine Gun” t…

 Bare Trees

Bare Trees

$9.99

Arguably the first consistently strong album Fleetwood Mac ever recorded — all the way back into the Peter Green/Jeremy Spencer era, the Mac’s albums had previously consisted of individual moments of brilliance in a sea of uninspired filler — 1972’s Bare Trees is also the album where the band finally defines its post-blues musical personality. Low-key but less narcoleptically mellow than 1971’s sleepy Future Games, Bare Trees is a singer/songwriter album in the traditional early-’70s style, backed up with just enough musical muscle to keep from sounding like weedy soft rock in the manner of Bread or Cat Stevens. This is the one Fleetwood Mac album on which singer/guitarist Danny Kirwan is the dominant figure, writing five songs to Chistine McVie and Bob Welch’s two apiece. Impressively, all three writers get off a small masterpiece on side two; McVie’s “Spare Me a Little of Your Love” sounds like a dry run for the string of hits she would start writing with 1975’s Fleetwood Mac, and it’s her first really good pop song. By comparison, Kirwan and Welch’s best songs are all-time career highlights. Kirwan’s “Dust” combines a gentle, gliding melody with resigned, melancholy lyrics and his most memorable chorus. Welch’s “Sentimental Lady” was, of course, his first solo hit in its 1977 re-recorded version, but this original take is far superior, and one of the great lost pop songs of the early ’70s. Outfitted with a terrific vocal melody, hooks galore, and an impressive tremolo guitar solo, “Sentimental Lady” is perhaps a little trite lyrically, but it’s a heartfelt and lovable tune regardless, and the best thing Fleetwood Mac did in the years between “Albatross” and “Over My Head.” The rest of the album is less magical, but the instrumental “Sunny Side of Heaven” and the downright funky “Danny’s Chant” are impressive in their use of atmospheric arrangements and so point toward the subtle but effective production choices that would make Fleetwood Mac a…
