All three siblings were highlighted equally in the trio, and their harmonies together were the ethereal kind that can only happen in a family where all involved have grown up hearing each other’s voices and phrasing every single day. The Bey trio recorded very little together, unfortunately, just a single album for RCA in 1961 and two albums for Prestige, Now! Hear!, released in 1964, and this one, ‘Round Midnight, from 1965. Part gospel, part muted R&B, part stylized blues, the Bey trio was also very much a jazz outfit, due in no small part to Andy’s underappreciated piano playing and the presence of bop veterans like Milt Hinton on bass, Osie Johnson on drums, and Kenny Burrell (who appears on about half of the tracks here) on guitar. In essence, the Bey trio sounded like a thinned-out and more jazzy, gauzy version of the Staple Singers. Highlights from this reissue, which is quite short (only around 33 minutes) by modern CD standards, are a wonderfully balanced version of Ray Charles’ “Hallelujah, I Love Her So,” a stirring take on Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child,” the ever expanding and ascending “Feeling Good,” and a fine rendition of the title track, Thelonious Monk’s “‘Round Midnight,” which has never been the easiest song in the world to sing effectively, but the trio nails it here in what might have been deemed a definitive version if it had actually been heard by more than a handful of people. Treacy’s vocals are tremulous and shy, and his lyrics run from the playful “Jackanory Stories” to several rather dark songs that foreshadow the depressive cast of many of his later albums. “Diary of a Young Man,” which consists of several spoken diary entries over a haunting, moody twang-guitar melody, is downright scary in its aura of helplessness and inertia. The mood is lightened a bit by some of the peppier songs, like the smashing “World of Pauline Lewis” and the “David Watts” rewrite “Geoffrey Ingram,” and the re-recorded version of the earlier single “I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives,” complete with deliberately intrusive prerecorded bird sounds, is one of the most charming things Television Personalities ever did. If Chairs Missing was a transitional album between punk and post-punk, 154 is squarely in the latter camp, devoting itself to experimental soundscapes that can sound cold and forbidding at times. However, the best tracks retain their humanity thanks to the arrangements’ smooth, seamless blend of electronic and guitar textures and the beauty of the group’s melodies. Where previously some of Wire’s hooks could find themselves buried or not properly brought out, the fully fleshed-out production of 154 lends a sweeping splendor to “The 15th,” the epic “A Touching Display,” “A Mutual Friend,” and the gorgeous (if obscurely titled) “Map Ref. 41? N 93? W.” Not every track is a gem, as the group’s artier tendencies occasionally get the better of them, but 154’s best moments help make it at least the equal of Chairs Missing. It’s difficult to believe that a band that evolved as quickly and altered its sound as restlessly as Wire did could be out of ideas after only three years and three albums, but such was the case according to its members, and with their (temporary, as it turned out) disbandment following this album, Wire’s most fertile and influential period came to a close. Sadly, their efforts proved unsuccessful as the Les Paul Standard was shelved midway through 1960 to make way for a new design that featured beveled edges, twin cutaways and a much thinner body the guitar known today as the SG Standard.The Les Paul Standards manufactured in 1960 all 635 of them represented the last attempts by Gibson to modify the guitars existing design in an effort to improve sales numbers that had fallen steadily since 1956. The guitars produced during the first half of 1960 were generally considered to be an extension of the 1959 Les Paul Standard, with the majority having thicker, rounded neck profiles (though not as thick as 1958), and many of them experiencing the same fading paint problem with the finish. By mid 1960, however, Gibson had begun manufacturing the Les Paul Standard with a much thinner neck profile, known today as the 60s Slim Taper profile. 1963 Isn’t 1962 $16.98 Bukka White was “rediscovered” — alive and well, despite rumors that he’d died a violent death sometime after his last official recording session in 1940 — by blues enthusiasts John Fahey and Ed Denson. These live tapes, made late that year by Fahey and Denson, were among the first tangible results of that rediscovery. This older cousin to B.B. King still had all of his stuff — he was only in his mid-50s, and unlike a lot of older bluesmen who were well past their primes for the ’60s blues revival, he could still play and sing up a storm. Indeed, he was playing faster and more precise in 1963 than he was in 1940, and his slide work shimmers and glistens throughout this CD, and the voice is superb as well. Opening with “Streamline Special,” he goes through a dazzling display of repertory, sounding like two or three players at once as he works the strings, playing lead and rhythm simultaneously on his acoustic guitar, in pieces running anywhere from a minute and a half to eight minutes or more. King has admitted trying to recreate White’s sound in his own electric playing, but these tapes show just how much of a losing battle that was, against this acoustic guitar virtuoso. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 1 $9.99 The Velvet Underground were little more than a rumor when Lou Reed left the band in 1970, but by 1974, thanks to Reed’s success as a solo artist, the Velvets had become a bona fide cult item, and that year Mercury Records released a two-record set compiled from tapes from shows in Dallas and San Francisco entitled 1969: Velvet Underground Live. The album featured a generous 104 minutes of music, and when Mercury reissued it on CD in 1988, rather than edit the material or release a two-CD set, they put out the album as two separate discs. While this seemed like a rather curious move, the album’s sequence was such that it divided in half quite cleanly, and while any VU fan will want both volumes, they don’t work half bad as individual albums. 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 1 rocks a bit harder than its counterpart; it opens with a grooving version of “Waiting for the Man,” moves on to a rave-up take of “What Goes On” that features some of Lou Reed’s finest rhythm guitar work, and closes out with passionate renditions of “Rock and Roll” and “Beginning to See the Light.” And where there are a number of ballads on hand (most notably a lovely take of “Lisa Says” and versions of “Sweet Jane” and “New Age” considerably different from those on Loaded), they sound just as committed and compelling as the rockers. While the Doug Yule-era edition of the Velvet Underground often gets short shrift from aficionados, the performances on 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 1 prove this band still had plenty of fire, and was playing at the top of their game. 1994 $12.99 When Shawn Camp cut his self-titled album for Warner/Reprise back in 1994, he was riding the coattails of two charting singles from his debut the previous year: “Never Felt So Good” and “Confessin’ My Love.” The artist, management, and industry insiders assumed the set would be a breakout. When it was turned over to the label, however, it was deemed “uncommercial,” and a wave of changes was “suggested.” (This was the era when Travis Tritt, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Trisha Yearwood, and Martina McBride had broken wide open and were topping the charts.) Camp refused and the album was shelved. Fast forward to 2009 when Warner Music Nashville President/CEO John Esposito caught Camp at a guitar pull during a music conference and was impressed. He discovered that the company owned the album, and went through the steps to bring it to market. On the one hand, one can almost exonerate the company for not releasing it at the time. Compared to the aforementioned artists, Camp’s meld of rootsy acoustic and electric instruments playing bluegrass and honky tonk-inspired modern country music was nowhere on the charts in 1994. That said, excellence is excellence: nobody ever told George Strait he couldn’t release a record because he was too country. Camp’s collection of originals and covers is timeless; it sounds “classic,” not nostalgic. Other than the choogling opener “Near Mrs.” with its up-front Telecasters and tight ringing snare drums, everything else here is far more traditional. Whether it’s a moving ballad such as “My Frame of Mind,” the broken-hearted two-step “Little Bitty Crack in Her Heart” with its whinnying fiddles and Dobros, the electric bluegrass in “Stop, Look and Listen (Cow Catcher Blues),” or the midtempo honky tonker “Worn Through Stone,” this album is the place where the history of country music meets the future and melds rather than clashes, for a lone reason: it’s honest. Originally produced by Mason at home in California, additional recording was done in Detroit and Miami. It’s a back to basics, ’70s style rock and Brit soul record. It contains some modern co-production by a number of folks including the Motor City’s Mark and Brian Pastoria (some of the mixing was also done in Detroit). It reveals Mason not only as a solid, focused, and relevant songwriter in the rock idiom, but as an expressive vocalist of uncanny power and depth (he’s actually gotten better over the decades). His guitar playing has continued to develop and grow: he is a far more interesting player than his peer Eric Clapton is at this stage of the game. There isn’t anything showy or hyper-consciously “dazzling” in the presentation, Mason’s always been humble, and he sets his playing and singing to be true to his songs. There are some stellar guests on the set, including Willie Nelson (playing guitar, not singing), and percussionist and vocalist Sheila E. The big surprise is soul/gospel vocalist Beth Griffith belting it out with great firepower. The production is warm, lively, and immediate. It’s not in your face; instead it concentrates on presenting the music as alive dynamically, though it is rich and deep in its textures.The opener, “Good 2 U,” is classic Mason, with a bluesy guitar riff backed by a taut string arrangement. The blues ring out in fills against Mason’s open, emotional baritone. The guitar winds around a funky backbeat on the refrain, complete with a chorus of backing vocalists, a tight snare, and a slithering B-3. “One Day” opens with the same raucous Stratocaster playing a gos…

2X45 $15.99 Collecting two separate sessions, one with Chris Watson and one without (the former also with guest drummer Alan Fish of fellow Sheffield experimentalists Hula), 2X45 shows the Cabs now well on their way to the perversely upbeat yet ominous funk of their early-’80s days. A song like “Breathe Deep” may have things like Richard H. Kirk’s sax and clarinet lines over the stripped-down polyrhythms of Alan Fish and Stephen Mallinder, yet the way Mallinder husks the vocals and the claustrophobic feel of the recording don’t entirely lend themselves to just going ahead and tearing the roof off the sucker. It’s a careful balance the Cabs maintain, but it does work more often than not, while the influence on later industrial-affiliated acts is immediately apparent. Watson’s work in the band at this point isn’t as noticeable as before, but the drop-in samples on “Yashar” of intense voices asking where all the people on earth are hiding give a sense of where he still turns up. The second session, with Nort and Eric Random on drums, guitar, and percussion, is a touch murkier at points but only just. “War of Nerves (T.E.S.)” may start with a tape of a guy talking about tortures involving rats and may have Mallinder’s distorted, demonic vocals in full effect, but the crisp rhythm punch is still predominant. “Wait and Shuffle” is even, dare it be said, perkier, with a brisk, reggae-touched drum and bass combination and some sprightly keyboards playing around with the sax wails and further found-sound oddities. The lengthy “Get out of My Face” concludes the session and release on perhaps the quirkiest note yet. Mallinder’s cryptic sloganeering peppers things throughout, but it’s Kirk’s intriguing guitar and the relentless but still somehow fun rhythm push which define the song best of all. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi

3 $16.98 For their album 3, the self-proclaimed Godfathers of Groove mix it up a bit more within the soul-jazz arena, playing interpretations of pop tunes, some straight-ahead jazz, originals, and in essence the funky music that is at the core of their identities. Bassist Jerry Jemmott was the special guest on their previous album, but here it is the veteran jazz saxophonist Bill Easley, who plays on selected cuts with his usual professional verve, panache, and solid, fluid lines. Guitarist Grant Green, Jr. is coming into his own as heard more clearly, while organist Reuben Wilson and drummer Bernard Purdie continue to stake their estimable reputations on the chitlin circuit music they grew up with. When the band chooses to swing, as on the basic 12-bar groove “My Blues” with its fleet organ solo amidst Purdie’s shuffle beat, or the straight-ahead, uncomplicated, and simple “Down Hill” with Easley’s deft tenor leading the way, there’s little stopping them. A very, very, very slow take of “Stella by Starlight” gives Green Jr. an opportunity to emulate his famous father’s unmistakable snappy technique, pulled off the bone and well done. His singing, a bit gritty, crops up on versions of “Light My Fire” and “What’s Going On,” admirable but not a strong suit. Where Wilson shines is his ability to either shred solos and melodies, as on the head-nodding groove of the delightfully rendered “The Funkster” or on the solid-sending feed he provides during “Groove On” above Green’s overdubbed guitar parts. Of course, there is no more readily identifiable drummer than Purdie when he shakes and bakes the clockwork rhythms of “Monkey Milk,” in an Average White Band “Pick Up the Pieces” mode, or adds his personal and widely copied light contemporary funk to a modified version of “Autumn Leaves.” Purdie also proves he can swing with the best of jazz drummers, an aspect of his personality and career not always given due credit. 3 Rounds and a Sound $9.99 Is Blind Pilot a folk outfit playing indie rock or indie rockers playing folk music? Singer/guitarist Israel Nebeker and drummer Ryan Dobrowski operate out of an acoustic setting but their mellow yet hooky tunes have more in common with indie rock outfits than folky troubadours. This Portland, OR-based group winds up being something like Beck or the Shins doing easygoing folksy tunes or Iron & Wine with a poppier sensibility. Whatever genre equation you want to use to describe them, it’s easy to say that Blind Pilot have come up with a winning music plan. The opening tune “Oviedo” sets the course that they chart throughout the debut full-length. Against some laid-back guitar strumming and gentle drumming, Nebeker warmly sings his hazy but quirky lyrics, which seem like private language of personal confessions (“Four times is once too much for luck and that’s how many times the clock struck/I wandered home saying your name”). As the song easies along, the arrangement gets fleshed out with muted horns and banjo picking. Nebeker nicely doubles his voice at times, but his singing maintains his intimate, hushed tones. In “Paint or Pollen,” he builds a set of beguiling images (“Milk in your water, black in your primer, wood in your brush”) to express that “the best is upon us.” While having an interesting way with words, Nebeker isn’t one for direct sentiment. He is a bit more overt in his affection on the title track, where he sings “My eyes were dark ’till you woke me.” While “The Bitter End” deals with death, it doesn’t dip heavily in morbidity as Nebeker expresses his emotions through personal but semi-obscure references to “hounds-tooth coats and vitamins.” For all of its off-the-cuff musical vibe, Blind Pilot also exhibits a fine sense of craftsmanship. The vibraphone that weaves through “One Red Thread” subtly expands the song’s sonic landscape while subdued horns show up again to bolster the woozy melody in “I Buried a Bone.” “Two Towns fro…

33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals $13.98 Clarence White’s guitar playing was captured on a number of albums and in a variety of styles between the mid-’60s and his early death in 1973. Still, one cannot help but listen to the Kentucky Colonels Appalachian Swing! and want to hear more of White’s fine acoustic work. Now, on 33 Acoustic Guitar Instrumentals, one can. These recordings were captured on a home tape during 1962, featuring no more than White’s lead guitar with Roger Bush playing rhythm. This album, recorded two years before Appalachian Swing!, shows just how far his flatpicking had advanced. Most of the instrumentals are short — from 44 seconds to a little over two minutes — and feature well known tunes such as “Sugarfoot Rag,” “Nine Pound Hammer,” and “Sally Goodin.” Some material — “In the Pines” and “I Am a Pilgrim” — is shot through with bluesy, soulful playing. Even on straightforward material like “Banks of the Ohio” and “Old Joe Clark,” White shows an incredible sense of rhythm, timing, and melody. The oldest of warhorses, “Wildwood Flower,” sounds fresh here, and perhaps it is because there is always a sense of openness and intelligence in White’s playing, something that is absent from contemporary flatpickers who trade style for speed. The liner notes replace the normal biographical information with testimonials of acoustic players influenced by White, including Jerry Garcia, Tony Rice, and Doc Watson.
