Learn how to buy a saxophone – music advice & buying guide for beginners

Alto or Tenor?
Let’s talk about these two since they are the most popular followed by soprano and baritone. Many people wouldn’t really know the differences between the alto and tenor saxophones if they glanced at them from a distance but there is a big difference between them.

Girls play alto and boys play tenor. When I was in a secondary school band it seemed that’s the way it was. It make sense when you think of the size difference, a tenor sax in it’s original factory case is somewhat heavy to carry, making it very difficult for a small teenage girl to lug it home from school every day.

For a small person, boy or girl it’s not a bad idea to start on the alto sax, it requires less air and the notes are closer together making it easier for small hands to control. Of coarse this is a generalisation and if you’re small and dead set on playing a tenor sax from the get go then do it.

Soprano or Baritone?
One voice higher than the alto is the soprano, and because it’s smaller it does require less air support. This is the good news, the bad news is that good intonation (tuning) will be harder to achieve for the beginner, especially in the higher register. Same thing applies to the baritone sax as far as being difficult to play in tune in the upper register, and the low register requires lots of air… it’s a big horn.

Reeds:
Beginners will start with a #1 or #2 reed. As you get into a more opened mouthpiece and your air support becomes more powerful you’ll most likely get a harder reed, maybe #3 or #4. They come in half sizes as well. Again, this requires a lot of experimenting with reed strengths and mouthpiece combinations. You’ll know whalso en the right one comes along.

Horns:
Selmer Mark VI come recommended. If you can’t get that however, generally speaking the older and more expensive the better. Also recommended: Selmer Paris Mark VI.

To begin with, it is best to buy a Cheap Horn. This is because:

1) You (for whatever reason) might not use it for very long

2) You’re unlikely to get a great tone in the first year or 2 no matter how expensive the horn is

3) It is the reed and the mouthpiece that are the most important part of your set-up rather than the horn itself.

Finding used horns should also be easy. Most music shops offer a good selection of and there are plenty of stores nationwide that specialise in classic professional horns. Also Ebay is a good place to find a used horn, as are online saxophone retailers.

Advantages of buying a new saxophone:

A new saxophone has special appeal. You know this saxophone is ready to play and has no wear, tear, or any defects on it at all. The plating is perfect and and the pads are new. It has a sophisticated design based all of the modern production techniques. A new saxophone also offers support from the factory and/or the music store where you purchased it. This new saxophone also holds it’s value fairly well for the first few months of ownership. Sometimes it’s possible to even get a new saxophone at a very good price. The psychological effect of owning a new saxophone also can’t be underestimated. For beginners and young students, that can be mean a lot. When you are first starting out, the look of the saxophone that matters, rather than how it sounds that matters.

Disadvantages of buying a new saxophone:

Buying a new saxophone can be costly. New horns can be up to 10 times as much as a used saxophone. Also, there are a lot more used horns available for purchase than new horns. If you want a new professional model, you must understand that there are less than a dozen true professional manufacturers out there. Another problem found on many horns is a lack of consistency in quality of manufacture. With mass production, the artistic aspect and attention to detail put into producing a musical instrument is often lost. This approach is seen as labourious and slow, quality is sometimes compromised, all in the name of quantity.

Advantages of buying a used saxophone:

A used saxophone can be an affordable option. Also, the materials and craftsmanship of older used horns is usually very good. Older saxophones tend to have a a lot more engraving and decoration than any other kind of horn. There is more likely to be plating (instead of lacquer) and have much stiffer brass.

Disadvantages of buying a used saxophone
:

The hardest part of buying a used saxophone is determining its true worth and condition. Without this prior knowledge, the person selling is at an advantage if you don’t know what to look for or what you want. Buying horns over the Internet poses another level of complexity since you are relying on a written description or electronic photographs.

This raises another difficult topic regarding buying a used horn from a private individual (and sometimes even music shops). A horn will almost never be in perfect condition when you go to see it. It is very rare that you’ll find a horn looks and plays perfectly. Most of the time, the horn has been sitting for a period of time (usually years) and will leak fairly badly. This horn may also have some minor rod or key damage that keeps it from playing properly. As these ocurrances are regular, you must see if you can get enough of an idea about the horn to decide if you want to buy it. This is yet another case of where bringing someone along to try it is a good idea. Naturally, when buying online, being able to feel and try it out is impossible. That is why it is especially important to only purchase from reputable dealers or people who have clearly documented the positives and negatives.

HOMEWORK
:

Make a list of the ‘must have’ and ‘would like to have’ requirements in your first Saxophone. The ‘must have’ is the most important as this is where you will not compromise and be secure in walking away from something that doesn’t feel right. With the second category be prepared to be more flexible, especially in negotiating with a private seller. However, be wary of online adverts or auctions that don’t clearly detail any damage along with pictures.

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Jam

20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Jam

$9.99

Inexplicably, Universal saw fit to re-release a 20th Century Masters survey of the Jam a mere 18 months or so after its original release. Along with new photography, there’s also a slight modification in the track listing, which is sadly underwhelming and fails to paint a true portrait of the diverse songwriting that the Jam consistently had over the duration of their relatively short career. Gone is the fiery anthem “The Eton Rifles” and in its place is the soft “Butterfly Collector,” which was a B-side. Also conspicuously absent are the anthem “Man in the Corner Shop” and the harrowing “Funeral Pyre.” However, that is not to say this is a bad compilation — far from it. The punk rock anthem “In the City” kicks things off in fine form, and hits like “Going Underground,” “Town Called Malice,” “Start,” and “That’s Entertainment” all make appearances. It’s a fine primer for those previously unfamiliar with their works, but the earlier 20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Jam (the version with the black-and-white photograph on the cover) will serve as a more well-rounded introduction. Die-hard fans will want to check out Snap! or The Very Best of the Jam, Rovi

 23rd & Stout

23rd & Stout

$15.98

After more than 30 years in the music biz, Chuck E. Weiss is still best known (a) as one of Tom Waits’ best friends, and (b) for being the subject of Rickie Lee Jones’ hit “Chuck E.’s in Love.” The latter distinction hasn’t done much for him lately, but he seems to be counting on the former to draw interest in his fourth album, 23rd & Stout. Most of 23rd & Stout sounds like some unreleased Tom Waits album that walks in a Twilight Zone between the Beefheart-influenced throb of Swordfishtrombones and the laid-back beatnik vibe of Blue Valentine. While it’s entirely possible that Waits has borrowed a bit of his buddy Weiss’ schtick over the years, there’s also little argument that Waits is far better at it, and it doesn’t help that Weiss’ band here (headlined by Tony Gilkyson on guitar and Don Heffington on drums) isn’t able to deliver the gloriously strange groove of Waits’ more recent work, though the group sounds great on the jazz-leaning material. When Weiss goes into a shaggy-dog story like the title cut or a lurching stomp such as “Prince Minsky’s Lament,” it’s all but impossible not to compare him to Waits, but in all fairness Weiss is a better than average songwriter, and when he lets his funny side take over (like he does on “Half Off at the Rebop Shop,” “Sho Is Cold,” or “Piccolo Pete”), he’s an enjoyable and absorbing performer. (His sly interpretation of “Primrose Lane” also suggests he could deliver a fine set of standards if he were so inclined.) Too much of 23rd & Stout makes Chuck E. Weiss sound like the Baja Marimba Band to Tom Waits’ Tijuana Brass, and the shame of that is he’s clearly talented enough establish a more distinctive creative identity by now, as the best moments of this album confirm. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

 50th Anniversary Anthology

50th Anniversary Anthology

$19.99

Not to be confused with the Four Tops compilation simply entitled Anthology (which only covers their Motown recordings), 50th Anniversary Anthology is a double-CD set spanning their first Motown hit in 1964 to the late ’80s. Does it include all of the popular numbers that most fans want from a greatest-hits collection? Definitely. Is it as good as Anthology, or slimmer compilations that focus exclusively on their Motown hits from the 1960s and early ’70s? No, because there’s way too much dispensable post-mid-’70s stuff on disc two. Still, for those who want an anthology that includes non-Motown hits (particularly their early-’70s Dunhill singles) and are reluctant to splash out for the four-CD Fourever box set, this is the best available alternative. And unquestionably, the first two-thirds or so of this collection is excellent, including all the big Motown hits; plenty of good, less celebrated lower-charting Motown singles, like “I’ll Turn to Stone” (the B-side of “7-Rooms of Gloom”); and their early Dunhill hits, in which they capably imitated Philly soul stars the O’Jays and the Spinners. But the group floundered as the ’70s waned, and by the time of the ribald 1976 disco hit “Catfish,” they were on the verge of not only losing their personality, but of embarrassing themselves. The proceedings don’t stop there, unfortunately, tacking on a bunch of other small post-1976 hits (“When She Was My Girl” was the only big one), culminating in Levi Stubbs’ gruesome contribution to the Little Shop of Horrors, “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space.” It was a long way from “Baby I Need Your Loving,” though luckily it’s the classic stuff that dominates the program. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

$25.99

The box set contains two CDs and four books, which together tell the story of the Rondos from the period 1978–1980.• CD 1 with a Rondos live concert from 1978 • CD 2 with all the Rondos songs previously released on vinyl between 1978-80• Art in Revolution Calls: 228 page photo book from the Rondos archives• A Black & White Statement: 84 page autobiography (bi-lingual) of the Rondos.• Destroy the Entertainment: 60 page lyric book, in English• Graffiti and Aerosols: 48 page comic book, with two new adventures of Red RatBetween 1978-80, the Rondos did 50 live shows. They released their records on their own independent label, King Kong Records, and together with three other bands (Rode Wig, Tändstickor Shocks, and Sovjets) formed the Rotterdam music collective “Red Rock,” with whom they shared gigs, equipment, and rehearsal space. Punk for the Rondos obviously meant more than “entertainment,” hence their slogan “Punk = Resistance.” Their independently published fanzine Raket (“Rocket”) quickly became the mouthpiece of many Dutch youth who turned their backs on consumerist society. The Rondos operated from the house called Huize Schoonderloo, a building that they saved from demolition and turned into a living and working space. Here they operated a print shop, a rehearsal room, and the alternative bookshop “Raketbasis” (“Rocketbase”). The Rondos gathered a fanatic and devoted following, but unhappy with the fact that this devotion threatened to turn them into punk heroes, which had nothing to do with their own idea of punk, the Rondos called it a day. The Rondos stem from the same generation of bands such as The Ex (in the Netherlands) and Crass (in England) with whom they shared equipment, stages, floor space, and in some cases, band members.

A Grand Don't Come for Free

A Grand Don’t Come for Free

$12.99

Mike Skinner has a problem, and from the sound of it, it’s life-threatening. He opens his second Streets full-length by moaning “It was supposed to be so easy…” as though he’s about to deliver his deathbed confession, the classic tale of a crime gone wrong. Instead, three minutes later, it’s clear what the “it” was: walking down to bring back a DVD rental, taking some money out of the machine, and calling his mother, who he’d just left at home, to tell her he wouldn’t be back for tea. Believe it or not, but that’s just another day in the life of Britain’s favorite bedsit producer cum singer/songwriter. Although listeners may not wonder where he finds his material, they’ll quickly realize that A Grand Don’t Come for Free is just as immediately striking as Skinner’s career-making full-length debut, Original Pirate Material. It succeeds, despite a clear lack of comparable singles, because of its paradoxical concept (and yes, it is a concept album) that a record can be tremendously ambitious even though it charts a very unambitious personality. Skinner’s urban British youth persona is even more fully drawn than before, and this time he delivers a complete narrative in LP form, with characters, conflicts, themes, and post-modern resolution on the closer. He’s sheepish about his utter lack of knowledge about football (and the heavy gambling losses that result from it), unreservedly enthusiastic about his girlfriend early on but later totally disgusted with her (in a blow-up that rivals Dizzee Rascal’s “I Luv U”), not so easily dismissive of a gorgeous show-off in front of him at the kebab shop, and willing to confront anyone who criticizes him for drinking at home until he can set up a row of empty Tennent’s Super cans. Fortunately, he hasn’t reduced the Streets to a comedy act in the process. There is as much tragedy and heartbreak here as there is slapstick comedy. “Blinded by the Lights,” driven at half-speed by a shadowy trance line and Skinner’s disorien…

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Excerpt: Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 February 3, 1959) known professionally as Buddy Holly , was an American singer-songwriter and a pioneer of rock and roll . Although his success lasted only a year and a half before his death in an airplane crash , Holly is described by critic Bruce Elder as “the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll.” His works and innovations inspired and influenced both his contemporaries and later musicians, notably The Beatles , The Rolling Stones , Don McLean , and Bob Dylan , and exerted a profound influence on popular music . Holly was in the first group of inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Holly #13 among “The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time”. Biography Early life Charles Hardin Holley was born in Lubbock , Texas to Lawrence Odell and Ella Pauline (Drake) Holley on Labor Day , 1936. The Holleys were a musical family, and as a boy Holley learned to play piano, guitar, and violin. His singing won him a talent contest at age five. Holly was always called Buddy by his family. In 1949, he made a recording of Hank Snow’s “My Two Timin’ Woman” on a wire recorder “borrowed” by a friend who worked in a music shop, his first known recording. In 1952, he met Bob Montgomery at Hutchinson Junior High School. They shared an interest in music and teamed up as “Buddy and Bob”. Initially influenced by bluegrass music , they sang harmony duets at local clubs and high school talent shows. Hutchinson Junior High School now has a mural honoring him, and Lubbock High School also honors the late musician. Holly sang in the Lubbock High School

 Acid Dreams

Acid Dreams

It’s hard to remember that way back in 1979, long before a zillion 1960s garage rock compilations had saturated the market, there were very few such various-artists albums on which to hear such rarities aside from Nuggets and the Pebbles series (which itself was just getting started). Acid Dreams was one of the first such comps, originally issued, according to the back cover blurb on this 2009 CD reissue, by a Berlin record shop owner who “pressed only 77 copies…aside from shipping to some friends or label owners, it was available only in his store.” As you can guess from the title, it’s a fairly psychedelic-oriented collection as far as ’60s garage rock anthologies go, though it makes room for some more straightforward garage as well. Why someone would want to pick this up on CD 30 years later is a thorny question. Many of the 18 tracks have since become available (sometimes several times over) on other comps and single-artist reissues, and the kind of garage fanatics likely to be interested in these cuts in the first place are likely to have many of them somewhere or other in their collection. On its own terms, however, it’s a considerably above-average garage comp, in part because of its psychedelic orientation, but also since the quality of the selection is pretty good too. A few of these songs (the Mystic Tide’s “Frustration,” Faine Jade’s “It Ain’t True,” Zakary Thaks’ “Can You Hear Your Daddy’s Footsteps”) are out-and-out classics of the genre; some (especially the Unrelated Segments’ “Where You Gonna Go” and the Balloon Farm’s “Question of Temperature,” the latter of which was an actual Top 40 hit) are classics of the more straight-ahead garage idiom; and some others (Teddy & His Patches’ “Suzy Creamcheese,” the Outcasts’ “1523 Blair”) are near-classics. And unlike the aforementioned tunes, a few of the better and trippier garage-psychedelic tracks, like the Velvet Illusions’ anti-drug “Acid Head” and the Beautiful Daze’s “City Jungle…

Rabbit Fur Coat, Lewis’ soulful love letter to the records of her childhood, was released in 2006 to universal acclaim. Similarly, for Acid Tongue, she was drawn by nostalgia, this time returning to the area where she grew up: Van Nuys, California. Lewis set up shop in Sound City Studios, which boasts a world famous live-tracking room that has produced seminal records over generations; from Tom Petty’s Damn the Torpedoes and Neil Young’s After the Goldrush to Nirvana’s Nevermind. Says Lewis, The idea was to go one hundred percent live, including the vocals, and doing as few overdubs as possible. I wanted to use that big beautiful room and get fully realized takes. If the drums bled into the vocal mic and it made for a technically imperfect sound it didn’t matter to me. If it felt right, if the emotion was there, we kept it.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Adelina de Lara OBE (23 January 1872 – 25 November 1961) was a British classical pianist and composer. She was born Lottie Adelina Preston in Carlisle, Cumberland on 23 January 1872 to parents George Matthew Tilbury (aka Preston) of Southampton and Anna de Lara. Her grandfather was the Spanish Count Laurent de Lara. Her mother was the sister-in-law of Sir Landon Ronald. She was given the performing name of Adelina de Lara after a visit to a music shop with her father, to secure her first engagement. The music shop proprietor considered the name Adelina Preston far too ‘English’ to perform under and thus suggested her mother’s maiden name as a suitable replacement. She first appeared in public at the age of six, and gave recitals throughout the UK until the age of twelve.

 Alight of Night

Alight of Night

$25.98

On Crystal Stilts’ first full-length album, Alight of Night, the bandmembers aren’t afraid to rely heavily on their obvious influences. On display for all to hear are the reverbed darkness of the early Jesus and Mary Chain, the twee punk energy of the Shop Assistants, the classic autumnal songcraft of Black Tambourine, and the raw and ragged production values of a hundred bands from the Seeds to Green on Red to Boyracer. Throw in some Velvet Underground, some C86, and some Love, and stir vigorously. What you end up with could be tired and derivative-sounding or it could be a thrilling mess of distorted energy. Alight of Night falls squarely in the latter half of that equation, and this is how they pull it off. For starters, there are the vocals of Brad Hargett. He mumbles and croons in a deadpan voice so mopey it feels like his face would crack if he ever fully formed syllables, much less words. Hargett hovers over the songs like a disaffected ghost, never cracking a smile or betraying any hint of lightness. It may take a spin or two to get past the remote iciness of his singing, but once you do it sounds perfectly appropriate in the context of the music, and his broken soul begins to seep into your brain. Next, they never make a false move musically. There are no lame solos, no lapses in taste, no moments they will wish they had back to do over. The band (wire-tough guitars by JB Townsend, powerful and simple drums from Frankie Rose) rocks hard when the song calls for it and provides the energy and drive that Hargett’s vocals lack. It’s a perfect blend of psychedelic gloom and garage rock punch, of indie pop hooks and girl group drama, of noise and candy. It’s obvious from the first few seconds of Alight of Night that Crystal Stilts aren’t doing anything shockingly new or innovative, and that’s all right. They give the old noise pop formula enough of a kick to make this a very worthwhile addition to any noise pop fan’s collection. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi

 American Pearl

American Pearl

$56.05

With sweat glistening off his tattooed chest under the hot lights of the Viper Room, Kevin Roentgen wails the lyrics to California with a distinctive, ultra-powerful voice and presence that rivals the fervor of the late Bon Scott. The packed club sings along with aggressive American Pearl favorites such as Automatic and sways to the quieter, but no less intense, strains of Bleed as guitarist Kevin Quinn adds his distinctive tones to the band’s driving, precise rhythms. You don’t have to be afraid to say you’re in a rock band anymore, says Roentgen (pronounced rent-gen ), a Los Angeles native who paid his dues and then some on the city’s fickle rock scene. Me and everybody I know have always played rock, though some steered off to the side. I was always stubborn and kept on rocking and now it’s come around to us, the singer notes of American Pearl’s recent signing to Wind-up Records, home to multi-platinum act Creed as well as finger eleven. From forming in late ‘97, to playing with the Cult and Buckcherry, to signing with Wind-up and playing Woodstock ‘99, American Pearl’s story may seem to an outsider like an overnight success, but the L.A.-bred quartet have earned their stripes, often the hard way. Kevin Quinn and I have known each other for like six years relates Roentgen, whose thoughtful and honest lyrics reflect hard living and lessons learned in the underbelly of Hollywood. He tattooed me a bunch of times and he’d come to see my old band; we had a mutual admiration society. When I was looking for a band, he’d decided to pick up the guitar again. The inception of American Pearl was here, Roentgen explains, gesturing around Quinn’s well-known and respected Sunset Boulevard tattoo shop, a spitting distance from where Divine Brown and Hugh Grant rendezvoused, the famed Sunset Grill and Guns ‘n’ Roses’ former rehearsal room. The new band took their name from their songs Savior (formerly American Savior ) and the tune Automatic Pearl .

Excerpt: Tombstone Junction was a small western town themed park located on KY State Route 90 in Cumberland Falls, Kentucky where operation was started in the 1960s and continued uninterupted until the park was heavily damaged by fire in the year 1989. After this first fire the park continued limited operation until completely destroyed by a second fire in 1991. The park featured a recreation of a small western frontier town complete with train station, working saloon, dance hall, jailhouse, shantys, and shops. There was also an outdoor amphitheater which hosted live shows featuring many of the biggest names in country and western music of the period. The biggest attraction at Tombstone Junction was a full sized standard gauge operating steam train which was unheard of in parks, especially one as small as Tombstone. Several things made Tombstone Junction unique among theme parks including its small size and the laid back “mom and pop” way the park was run. The park developed from the building and operation of the “Cumberland Falls Scenic Railroad” in the 1960s. The railroad was built by Millard and Morris Stephens from nearby Whitley City as an attraction to compliment The Falls Motel (which they owned) which was near Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, both of which were a very short distance down the road. The railroad was built and laid around the edges of a large cut between two mountains that had been filled in enough so that a 2 1/2 mile “L” shaped circle of track could be laid. This was almost a copy of the idea behind the “Rebel Railroad” in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee which eventually grew into what is known as the Dollywood themepark today. For the second season of operation the railroad’s developers made in-house additions of buildings, shop… More:

 An Ark for the Listener

An Ark for the Listener

$15.98

Since the 1980s, Philip Jeck has been creating sound sculptures — some of them quite abstract, others structured with beats and audible progressions — using junk-shop record players, outdated Casio keyboards, basses, effects, and other digital and analog miscellanea. An Ark for the Listener started out as a live performance at Kings Place London in February of 2010; after about a dozen more live performances, Jeck took recordings of them back to his home studio, extracted passages from the recordings, and used those extracts to create a new studio version. The seven-part piece was inspired by a Gerard Manley Hopkins poem about a shipwreck in which five nuns drowned, though the music contains no explicit musical or lyrical referents to it. It opens in a dark and arrhythmic mode with “Pilot/Dark Blue Night,” a track that gradually becomes oddly brighter and more open, incorporating what sound like creepily altered radio samples; “Ark” blends chiming bell tones with glockenspiel sounds, and is aimlessly lovely. “Pilot Reprise” and “The All of Water” sound like afterthoughts, with chords and noise carelessly piled on, but “The Pilot (Among Our Shoals)” is especially interesting: faintly sampled beats combine with almost recognizable melodic fragments to create something that sounds like a remix of a Bill Nelson track circa 1983. The album closes with a couple of remixes, both of them quite pleasant. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi

Bhim-tal. Having spent a week on the Naini lake, and drank your fill of the beauties of rock and water and shaggy wood, you will make an early start some morning for Bhim-tal. If I am to accompany you, your start must be an early one. Let the gongs in the lower Bazaar strike six on your ear, as you pass out of the shady valley, and are suddenly bathed in the flood of sunlight breaking over the Nepal hills. There is no more lovely ride in the Kumaun hills than the sinuous path which you will follow round the slopes of Sher-ka- Danda and Lyriakanta, now dipping into a deep gully with its brawling torrent, now lingering in the shade of the oaks and rhododendra, and anon basking in the glorious sunlight as the road glides over the steep grassy slopes of the Eastern spurs of Lyriakanta—all the while you may feast on a glorious view of the Sub-Himalayan Forest and Terai stretched at your feet—wide patches of lovely green fields encroaching on the primaeval forest, a monument to the wisdom and energy of the best man that ever swayed the sceptre in Kumaun. Arrived at the sloping shoulder of the mountain, the road turns downwards to the Bhowali stream, passing Bhowali House about the fifth mile. For about a quarter of a mile after passing the water mill and bnnia’s shop the path keeps the right bank of the little stream, and as you watch the water curling under the banks, brawling over the shallows and eddying round the rocks, your heart will jump to its music, for it recalls the days long fled, when you followed the windings of the burn down the heath covered hill, and through the sweet smelling birch woods—and filled your basket with the speckled trout. The burn is there and the overshadowing trees, and the sweet glints of sunshine sparkling on the

 Anthems: Electronic '80s, Vol. 2

Anthems: Electronic ’80s, Vol. 2

$22.99

Following the success of their first Anthems: Electronic 80s compilation, the Ministry of Sound label returns with another collection incorporating the best synth pop, New Romantic, and indie dance tunes of the colorful and inventive decade. Alongside number ones from the Human League, Kraftwerk, and the Communards, there are iconic tracks from Spandau Ballet, Eurythmics, and Duran Duran, one-hit wonders (Kim Carnes’ “Bette Davis Eyes,” New Musik’s “Living by Numbers”), and less familiar material from the likes of Devo, Laid Back, and Re-Flex. Highlights from the first disc include Talk Talk’s gloriously atmospheric “It’s My Life,” Scritti Politti’s reggae-fused “The Word Girl” and Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s anthemic “Welcome to the Pleasuredome.” Erasure’s infectious hi-NRG pop classic “A Little Respect,” Altered Images’ impossibly uplifting “I Could Be Happy” and the Communards’ chart-topping cover version of “Don’t Leave Me This Way” provide the standouts for Disc Two, while Simple Minds’ Brat Pack staple “Don’t You Forget About Me,” Stock, Aitken and Waterman’s finest moment, Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record),” and New Order’s brooding, bass-heavy “True Faith” are the choice cuts from the third disc. However, as the first compilation gathered many of the decade’s biggest electro hits, this second volume seems to struggle to fill its 60 tracks. Indeed, it’s hard to see quite how the likes of Billy Idol’s “White Wedding” and the Stranglers’ “Golden Brown” fit into the genre, which makes the lack of Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode, arguably two of the biggest synth pop groups of the ’80s, even more puzzling. But even though it suffers from occasional padding, Anthems: Electronic ’80s, Vol. 2 is still a consistently enjoyable retrospective of one of the most influential and innovative musical eras. ~ Jon O’Brien, Rovi

Excerpt: Tekserve – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Tekserve founders David Lerner and Dick Demenus met at the New York City public FM radio station WBAI in 1970, and with engineer Mike Edl set up shop together late in the decade under the name Current Designs Corporation. Their business was electronic engineering and industrial design. They manufactured the indestructible music listening stations to be found at the Lincoln Center branch of the New York Public Library, and early models of the audio listening tours now found in many art museums. “We bought the very first Mac that came out in 1984 for $3,000, and we fell in love with it.” Demenus says, “Weve been loyal ever since.” As Macintosh users and electrical engineers, the Current Designs partners found themselves uniquely qualified to fix their own Macs when they started to malfunction. Tekserve was formed as a “sister company under the same roof” dedicated to servicing Macintosh computers and became Apple-authorized for repair in 1993. Tekserve has occupied four locations on the same side of the same block in Chelsea: a 3,000 foot loft at 115 West 23rd Street; another loft at 163 West 23rd Street (the “Traffic Building”); a larger space on the fourth floor of 155 West 23rd Street, and later expansions to the third floor. In June 2002, the company moved to its present 25,000 square foot storefront location at 119 West 23rd Street, occupying the entire first floor of the Printing Arts Building (which extends through to 24th street). The first three locations were notable for their eccentric decor, including an antique ten-cent Coke machine and a porch swing. The Coke machine remains at the 119 West 23rd Street location, but the porch swing was retired due to the newest space’s s… More:

Excerpt: Ástor Piazzolla Ástor Pantaleón Piazzolla (March 11, 1921 July 4, 1992) was an Argentine tango composer and bandoneón player. His oeuvre revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango , incorporating elements from jazz and classical music . A virtuoso bandoneonist, he regularly performed his own compositions with different ensembles.Biography Piazzolla was born in Mar del Plata , Argentina in 1921 to Italian parents, Vicente Nonino Piazzolla and Asunta Manetti. His grandfather, a sailor and fisherman named Pantaleone Piazzolla, had immigrated to Mar del Plata from Trani , a seaport town in the southeastern Italian region of Apulia , at the end of the 19th century. Ástor Piazzolla spent most of his childhood with his family in New York City , where he was exposed to both jazz and the music of J. S. Bach at an early age. While there, he acquired fluency in four languages: Spanish , English , French , and Italian . He began to play the bandoneon after his father, nostalgic for his homeland, spotted one in a New York pawn shop. At the age of 13, he met Carlos Gardel , another great figure of tango, who invited the young prodigy to join him on his current tour. Much to his dismay, Piazzolla’s father deemed that he was not old enough to go along. While he did play a young paper boy in Gardel s movie El día que me quieras , this early disappointment of
