That 1960 slim profile neck with a special long neck tenon has a 24 -scale length and is 1 11/16th – inches wide at the nut. It is one-piece mahogany supporting a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with the guitars namesake pearloid block inlays and a single-ply cream binding. Theres a handsome holly veneer on the headstock and vintage tulip shaped tuners.Theres a single-ply cream binding on the top and back. It has the same solid maple center block that gave the original 58s their feedback resistant qualities and contributed greatly to their unique tonal characteristics. The body is closer to the slightly smaller 1959 Fat Neck design at 16 inches wide and 19 inches long, but sports the original 58s depth of 1 3/4 inches.Like all of the Gibson Custom Shops top-of-the-line guitars, it also comes with a Custom Shop case, a custom care kit, and a certificate of authenticity. 777: The Desanctification $14.98 Late in 2010, France’s Blut Aus Nord announced they would be following Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue with the Stars with a sequel to their classic 2003 offering, The Work Which Transforms God. What’s more, it would be a conceptual trilogy furthering the concept of the number 777 that the former album addressed philosophically. Predictably, expectations were high. The first volley, 777: Sect(s), featured a six-track suite in which all tracks were entitled “Epitome.” It was a brutal, blastbeat-laden assault that sounded as if it were recorded live in the studio. It still contained BAN’s atmospheric spacious and ethereal touches, but it felt immediate (even if the often frenetic drums were mixed much higher than the guitars and the vocals — the latter were almost buried). It also seemed to embody aspects from all of the band’s previous offerings — if only for a few minutes at a time. Part two, 777: The Desanctification, is almost a mirror image of 777: Sect(s). These tracks continue the suite with “Epitome, Pts. 7-13,” and it’s still heavy, but plods more than it careens — and that’s a good thing. Guitars and vocals are more prominent in the mix; atmospheres are richly layered and still come off as live; drums and drum machines are active and play off one another for a wider, richer textural palette. Electronic sounds and ambiences are applied more throughly as well. Whereas most of the tracks on 777: Sect(s) pushed the seven-, eight-, and even 13-minute barriers in length, everything here is less than nine, with most cuts coming in between six and seven minutes. The angularity of Vindsval’s guitar playing and the way it engages percussion on “Epitome, Pt. 8″ act almost like counterpoint, building to a thunderous crescendo. Elsewhere, on “Epitome, Pt. 10,” the pace, while midtempo, feels syrupy and slow, as Vindsval’s layered vocals create a choir-like effect which is answered by middle-string guitar riffing in near processional mode. “Epitome, Pt. 7″ be… |

A Vision of Misery [Bonus Tracks] $16.95 After two fine albums straddling the stylistic transition between thrash and death metal, Sadus pretty much committed to the latter with their third, 1992’s A Vision of Misery. Really, they had no choice, given thrash metal’s increasing obsolescence and death’s simultaneous rise. Still, this move nevertheless resulted in one of two conclusions: at best Sadus sacrificed the key thrashing component that had helped make them special and somewhat unique; at worst it exposed them as carryovers from the bygone generation. Under either assumption, A Vision of Misery was hardly some kind of failure, with new compositions such as “Through the Eyes of Greed,” “Machines,” and “Echoes of Forever” epitomizing technical death metal, while not exactly measuring up to genre standard-bearers like Death and Morbid Angel. And, although they certainly lose some of their sharp claws due to the overall denser guitar sound chosen here, it’s actually the band’s increasing reliance on mid-paced tempos and repetitive riffs that winds up dragging down other selections like “Slave to Misery” and the way overlong but otherwise solid “Facelift.” Even so, for fans of Sadus’ habitually inventive arrangements and sharp dynamic shifts, there’s plenty on offer here. And note to the Steve DiGiorgio fan club: his mind-boggling bass licks and impossible tricks are still regularly splattered all over these tracks, even if often crushed deeper in the mix. Unfortunately, DiGiorgio soon accepted an offer to go off on tour with the far more lucrative Death, leaving Sadus in limbo for the next half-decade. Annwn $15.98 Ocrilim is one of (at least) three Mick Barr outfits whose name is an invented word beginning with the letter “O.” The other two are Orthrelm, his duo with drummer Josh Blair, and Octis, a solo project that combines his guitar playing with programmed drums. Ocrilim is also a solo project, but there are no drum machines to be found here. The entire album uses the same instrumentation: two distorted electric guitars (one in each channel) and one (heavily fuzzed-out) bass. Barr’s playing style and solid-state guitar tone are unmistakable, and the seven untitled pieces here could have only been recorded by him, it seems. Like Orthrelm’s Ipecac release OV, this album finds Barr employing a relatively minimal compositional approach, using far more repetition than on Orthrelm’s ultra-dense early recordings. The tracks here, which average about 11 minutes apiece, tend to move gradually through a few distinct sections, with most of these sections involving some sort of repeating, almost mantra-like riff that gradually mutates as it cycles onward. “Annwn, Pt. 1,” for example, repeats (with slight variation) the same abrasive riff for the first seven minutes before shifting into the next one, and then ultimately moves into a climax that is unusually “pretty” and evocative for Barr. “Annwn, Pt. 2″ reveals another (often hidden) inspiration of Barr’s when it veers into a droning, buzzing section reminiscent of early-’90s Scandinavian black metal bands like Darkthrone and Burzum — again showing a more tonal melodic sensibility than he typically does. There are interesting moments like these throughout, but at the same time, this album is packed to the gills with Barr’s essentially alien-sounding music (nearly 80 minutes’ worth), and there is no change in instrumentation, guitar or bass tone, or volume level. As such, listening to this album from start to finish can be a daunting task, and sampling a track or two at a time might be the best way to go about listening to… |
