The Bible Case for Instrumental Music $10.99 “Bob Ballard has often come to the discussion of instrumental music to accompany singing in worship. In 25 years of Bible College teaching the discussion has surfaced in the classroom often. Being in instrumental churches most of his life, he also has many friends in the non-instrumental churches of Christ. He is now attending both fellowships. Both groups love the Lord and have a desire to follow the scriptures in seeking God’s will and attempting to please Him. This book is an attempt to get dialogue between the two groups. In recent years much progress has been made in bringing fellowship and unity between two groups with the same roots, but have been far apart over a disagreement over the use of the instrument with the signing of the worship service. This book refers to the over 180 places in the Bible where instrumental music is used to praise God. The book tries to arrive at the conclusion a man would derive if he had never read the Bible before and now reads it for the first time, using all the scriptures in the Bible on instrumental music. The motive behind the writing of this book by Bob Ballard is to develop fellowship and unity between brothers.” |

!Viva! Los Straitjackets $17.98 The Shadows/Ventures of the ’90s arrive as a quarter in Mexican wrestling masks, burgundy turtlenecks, black jeans, black Converse and bedecked in silver sun pendants. Live los Straitjackets effect an inscrutable demeanor and rock from a stage uncluttered with monitors. Because they actually listen to each other, the drummer sits in their midst at the stage’s edge. The band is tight, fused and rocking. For me, there is no better guitar-based instrumental rock album of 1997. ~ Tom Schulte, Rovi |

#3 [Bonus Tracks] $12.99 Like Beck in his ’90s prime, Suburban Kids with Biblical Names have no respect for musical boundaries. If they think a mixture of African-styled highlife-guitars, electronic beats, and ukuleles is a good idea for an indie pop song, they won’t hesitate to put it on record. The result? Wonderful. #3 includes former EP A-side “Funeral Face,” and just listen to the opening of “Peter’s Dream”: within mere seconds they combine Kraftwerk-styled percussion with a guitar that sounds exactly like Hank Marvin anno 1960, and it could hardly have sounded more right. On “Seems to Be on My Mind,” the distorted vocals and shuffly beat almost make them sound classic rock cool, before it breaks into a singalong chorus echoing the kind of pop like they used to make between the world wars. And so it goes on and on, genres and styles meet and ultimately converge through the unusually strong pop songwriting that always lies at the core of the album. No song gets boring, ever. Suburban Kids with Biblical Names sure do possess the geeky charm so beloved in indie and lo-fi circles. Classic one-liners like “there’s a Falcon Crest side to everything” and “I wanna turn all their dancefloors into a burning inferno of ba ba ba” are the stuff dreams are made of for any indie pop aficionado. But don’t let the spectacles and the wit fool you. There’s nothing amateurish about the kids’ performance at any point; in fact, the instrumental performances and the creative and crystal clear production are among the most impressive things about this album. Seldom do debut albums come as truly wonderful as this one. [The U.S. edition of the album adds two extra tracks: Love Will" and "Trumpets and Violins".] ~ Anders Kaasen, Rovi |

”Just another one of God’s gifts”: Prince, African-American masculinity, and the sonic legacy of the eighties. $49.99 The popular recording artist Prince is known for his ability to fuse musical styles considered mutually exclusive on the basis of race—funk and new-wave, R&B and hard rock. Prince has also made a name for himself by moving between different identities—sexual savant, devout man of god, androgynous sprite—a strategy that fit the 1980s, an era of shifting identity politics. This dissertation expands on previous scholarly work, which has claimed Prince as a quintessentially “post-modern” figure, by showing how his music manifests a history of the struggle for African-American self-representation. As an artist well versed in American pop history and deeply engaged with the black church, Prince was bringing the liberatory strategies of African-American culture to bear even as he de-constructed gender and sexuality. This dissertation takes a fresh approach to the question of music and identity: by analyzing Prince’s music with an ear for particular genre references, I present a snapshot of racial politics, music, and American society during a time period that few scholars have yet addressed. Musical genre is the discursive arena in which popular musicians navigate identity and history, and in each of my chapters I have focused on how Prince manipulates genre references, taking instrumental idioms as the signifiers of genre and identity. My introduction considers Prince’s use of the guitar, a “white” rock instrument; chapter one deals with keyboard synthesizers, and how Prince blended R&B horn idioms with new-wave music; chapter two discusses the relationship between funk drumming and black identity, exploring Prince’s symphonic transformations of the funk and his ambivalence to hip-hop. Chapter three connects Prince’s vocal styles to gospel music and the cosmology of the black church; and chapter four details how Prince re-integrated horns into his music, engaging with jazz and R&B as a way to reclaim black musical history. ‘Merican [EP] $7.99 After a seven-year hiatus, punk-pop pioneers the Descendents return with ‘Merican, a solid five-song EP that picks up where the band left with 1996’s Everything Sucks. The group’s first release on Fat Wreck Chords, after a short tenure with Epitaph, finds Milo Aukerman, Bill Stevenson, Stephen Egerton, and Karl Alvarez revisiting the timeless lovelorn attack of cherished songs from their past like “Wendy,” “Clean Sheets,” and “Silly Girl” on the disc-opener, “Nothing With You.” Made whole with an infectious chorus, unrelenting rhythms, and a buoyant guitar, the song gives way to the ferocious title cut, which harks back to vintage Bad Religion as it explores the black marks on America’s history, from slavery to Vietnam. But such sociopolitical commentary is rare from the ‘Dents, who downshift to the palatable midtempo number “Here With Me,” which eventually gives way the manic, spastic “I Quit,” a nervous, edgy “Catalina”-like throwback. Only the closing instrumental, a hidden number without an official title, is worth skipping, as it drags in a way that no Descendents number has a right to. ~ John D. Luerssen, Rovi |

1000 Kilometers $16.98 Throughout their long existence, Oregon have consistently performed music that is difficult to categorize. Some of their acoustic ventures, particularly in the group’s earlier days, could be considered “world jazz” or “folk-jazz” due to the unusual instrumentation, avoidance of conventional blue notes, and original pieces. On 1000 Kilometers, there are times when the group actually sounds close to Weather Report in the 1970s, particularly when electronics and Paul McCandless’ soprano are utilized. But there are also performances that sound far from Weather Report, focusing on Ralph Towner’s acoustic guitar, McCandless’ other instruments, and the rhythm team of bassist Glen Moore and drummer Mark Walker. The music constantly keeps one guessing, and although McCandless is generally the lead voice in the ensembles, all four musicians make strong contributions. 1000 Kilometers is a fine effort from a unique band. The improvisation by Paul McCandless on the title track was nominated for a Grammy award in 2007 for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, and Mark Walker’s “Deep Six” was nominated for Best Instrumental Composition. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi |

12 X 5 $13.98 The evolution from blues to rock accelerated with the Rolling Stones’ second American LP. They turned soul into guitar rock for the hits “It’s All Over Now” and “Time Is on My Side” (the latter of which was their first American Top Ten single). “2120 South Michigan Avenue” is a great instrumental blues-rock jam; “Around and Around” is one of their best Chuck Berry covers; and “If You Need Me” reflects an increasing contemporary soul influence. On the other hand, the group originals (except for the propulsive “Empty Heart”) are weak and derivative, indicating that the band still had a way to go before it could truly challenge the Beatles’ throne. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |

2 $19.98 Bump’s second album was due for a 1971 release but never appeared, so its first formal release 40 years on is by default something of a curio. Given the band’s pleasant but not generally remarkable work on that first album, 2 would seem to be more of the same, but there’s a sense that they might have been figuring out a way to develop things just a bit more if they had had the chance. “Winston Built the Bridge” starts off with all the scuzz you could want, which ends up lurking in the background behind the sweet demi-dippy demi-funky song itself, a classic case of accidentally stumbling onto something, at once continuing the just-out-of-the-acid-splash craziness of the previous years but not quite finding what they need to connect. But moments like the sudden break from keyboards to high chorused vocals on “Such Pretty Scenery,” followed later by an extended instrumental break that’s both stentorian and genuinely entertaining, show that the sparks are there. A song like “Let Me Lie,” stripping away the keyboard swirls for the most part for a taut edge, is a nice touch, giving a little more variety for the album, while the easygoing demi-boogie of “Sea of Tranquility” — a perfectly timely reference given the recent moon landings — also gels well enough. Meanwhile, “Boris the Black” lets them go for a full-on indulgence at an album-closing ten minutes, but again, compared to a lot of the little-goes-a-long-way acts of the time, the strip back to a quieter part followed by a rhythmic guitar/cymbal slash and crash with keyboard soloing over the top all holds up entertainingly. When a triumphant solo starts with three minutes to go, it actually feels like something that’s been earned; when psychotic screams crop up in the final minute, it makes for an uneasy ending at best — and a compelling one. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |

2Cellos $12.99 Following in the footsteps of Justin Bieber and Soulja Boy, Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, aka 2Cellos, were discovered through YouTube, after six million people viewed their classical cover version of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.” Now with a major-label deal under their belt, the classically trained musicians face the tough prospect of translating what could be seen a one-trick pony novelty into a full-length album. It’s a task made even more difficult considering that, unlike violinist David Garrett’s forays into classical rock, which add layers of orchestral production on top of his virtuoso skills, the two 24-year-olds’ self-titled debut doesn’t feature any other instruments. Luckily, the pair’s masterful talents, which seem to produce sounds from a cello that otherwise wouldn’t seem possible, more than make up for the lack of background support. Indeed, other than the deliberately sparse reworkings of Johnny Cash’s rendition of “Hurt” and second Jackson interpretation “Human Nature,” its 12 tracks very rarely feel as stripped-back as one might expect, as the duo replicates the twanging guitar hook from Dick Dale’s Pulp Fiction theme “Misirlou,” the crunching riffs of Nirvana’s grunge classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and the lilting piano chords of Muse’s “The Resistance,” using a combination of plucking, bowing, and frantic strumming. While the bombastic treatments of “Smooth Criminal” and Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle” have received all the attention, the whole concept is just as effective on the slower numbers, as they turn Sting’s flamenco-tinged “Fragile” into a mournful Gypsy folk ballad and transform U2’s “With Or Without You” into a poignant instrumental suitable for a soundtrack to a Jane Austen adaptation. The ambitious project only really falters on the one track, which on paper seems best suited to their craft, with their adaptation of “Viva la Vida” sounding surprisingly flat when compared … |

31 Fiddle Favorites $9.99 These 31 fiddle tunes and breakdowns were recorded during an all-night session in the mid-’60s with an all-acoustic combo of dobro, guitar, bass, and Fiddlin’ Mutt Poston’s fiddle. Mixing traditional fiddle tunes and folk songs with an occasional Western swing number (“Take Me Back to Tulsa”) or Tin Pan Alley favorite (“Alabama Jubilee”), Poston’s nimble sawing and sturdy accompaniment make for a solid showcase that is sure to please enthusiasts of country fiddlin’ and old-timey instrumental music. ~ Greg Adams, Rovi |

3D $17.98 When one first glances at the cover of Casey Driessen’s 3D, it’s difficult to know what to expect. Driessen’s red hair is brushed back, and he’s wearing these funky 3D glasses with a “3″ on one lens and a “D” on the other. From this info, one might be prepared for spacey electronic music or perhaps a surrealistic singer/songwriter. But the final clue at the bottom on the cover photo is the head of a fiddle, Driessen’s instrument of choice, which may or may not lead one to guess 3D’s dominant musical style: progressive instrumental Celtic music. Listeners have probably never heard “Sally in the Garden” arranged with drums, programming, and an electric sruti box, though the addition of Jerry Douglas’ dobro, Tim O’Brien’s bouzouki, and Driessen’s fiddle add stable elements. It’s as though the players started with a fairly traditional base of acoustic instruments and then inserted percussion, progressive material, and the occasional electronic element to spice things up. Even on more conservative — instrumentally speaking — tunes like Driessen’s “The Confusion Before Dreams” proves quite compelling, and the vocal numbers, often a distraction on primarily instrumental albums, are fun. There’s a funky take on “Sugarfoot Rag” with Driessen’s ultra-cool vocal and Darrell Scott spunky guitar work. While a number of semi-progressive musicians like O’Brien have gotten lots of credit for pushing bluegrass and Celtic in new directions, the results (as with O’Brien’s dual release in 2005) seem rather tepid compared to 3D. This is fun music that will probably offend a few traditionalists while letting everyone else know that the old music can grow in exciting and unpredictable ways. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi |

6000 Sunset Blvd. $18.98 In the spring of 1953, Tennessee Ernie Ford — then near the peak of his popularity — recorded an amazing amount of transcriptions for RadiOzark at Western Recorders on 6000 Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Twenty-three songs from those sessions are on this important archival collection, which isn’t only of interest to Ford fans or early country scholars. For one thing, the sound, considering the age and source of the original recordings, is amazing — it’s clear and full, on par with studio sessions for commercial releases. Also, Ford is backed by a fine band including pedal steel virtuoso Speedy West, a notable recording artist in his own right who gets an instrumental showcase for his astonishing steel guitar work on Rodgers & Hart’s “Lover.” Also in the lineup are a young Billy Strange on rhythm guitar, Billy Liebert on accordion and piano, George Bruns on bass and trombone, and Harold Hensley on violin and clarinet, with most of the guys also contributing backup vocals. Though Ford was nominally a country singer, the songs selected for this compilation show him to be at home with interpreting many strains of American popular music through his easygoing style, from covers of hits by Eddy Arnold, Bunny Berigan, and Fats Waller to standards like “Try a Little Tenderness,” “There’ll Be Some Changes Made,” and Hoagy Carmichael’s “Up a Lazy River” and “Georgia on My Mind.” These might have been recorded in a professional studio for radio transcriptions, but the result comes off almost like an informal living room/front porch musical get-together, Ford joking around amiably with his band between songs. It should be acknowledged that for all its quality, this is nonetheless not the place to hear Ford at his best or most representative, it being light on the country boogies for which he was most known for playing on his hit records of the period, and heavier on his covers of non-country pop tunes than might be expected. But as good-sounding and well-played… |

61 and 49 $16.98 The sophomore release from guitarist Eldred along with Blasters members John Bazz on bass and drummer Jerry Angel is a rock ? em, sock ? em mix of high-octane rockabilly and rollicking blues drenched in Memphis soul. High-profile guests range from the late Ike Turner (on piano!) in one of his last recorded performances (Turner’s final album was also on the Zoho Roots label), Elvis guitarist Scotty Moore, Los Lobos co-founder Cesar Rosas, and ex-Fabulous Thunderbirds guitar wildman Kid Ramos. They make impressive contributions but this is Eldred’s show as he shifts from the sweet, Hendrix-inspired tone of the instrumental ballad “Ruby’s Blues” to the Chuck Berry/Stones rave-up of “Jimmy, Jimmy,” with Turner’s piano pounding like Jerry Lee Lewis in his prime. Rosas adds Latin flavor to the gospel strains of “This Old Train,” but “I Ain’t Comin’ Back” channels Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Cold Shot” a little too closely for comfort. The recording is crisp, live sounding, and generally filled with sharp, original songwriting that takes some edgy, even extreme chances, such as on “Mr. Newman,” a song about a pedophile from his victim’s point of view. Not exactly the kind of subject matter you’d expect from a roots-rocking guitarist. That lyrical intensity is tempered by some straight-ahead Texas shuffling in the comparatively simplistic “Lookie Here” and the Ramos-enhanced “Louise.” Eldred unplugs and goes solo country-Delta for the Robert Johnson-styled title track, another change of pace in an eclectic album filled with them. The guitarist is a more than adequate singer too, and the fact that he penned all of these tunes, even as derivative as many of them are, shows he’s a triple talent as a player, vocalist, and songwriter. The two backing members create a palpable groove throughout, especially on the Booker T.-influenced instrumental “Ms. Gayle’s Chicken House,” making it obvious why they are given somewhat equal billing as a trio. Eldred’s articulat… |

7th Symphony $13.98 Apocalyptica was a cool concept: four classical cellists playing arrangements of Metallica songs. But that was their first EP, and that was a long time ago. Now they play instrumental hard rock and bring in guest vocalists. The returns have diminished. “End of Me” features former Bush vocalist Gavin Rossdale. Brent Smith of Shinedown shows up for “Not Strong Enough,” a power ballad that sounds like a performance from a televised country music awards show. When the cellos are fed through pedals, the sound can be quite impressive, like a guitar, but five times more room-filling and powerful. The best track is “2010,” which features a guest performance by Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, who drives the music ferociously, like a speeding train straight into hell. ~ Phil Freeman, Rovi |

801 Live $11.99 801 provided Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera with one of his most intriguing side projects. Although the band only played three gigs in August and September 1976, this album captures a night when everything fell right into place musically. That should only be expected with names like Eno and Simon Phillips in the lineup. (Still, the lesser-known players — bassist Bill MacCormick, keyboardist Francis Monkman, and slide guitarist Lloyd Watson — are in exemplary form, too.) The repertoire is boldly diverse, opening with “Lagrima,” a crunchy solo guitar piece from Manzanera. Then the band undertakes a spacey but smoldering version of “Tomorrow Never Knows”; it’s definitely among the cleverest of Beatles covers. Then it’s on to crisp jazz-rock (“East of Asteroid”), atmospheric psych-pop (“Rongwrong”), and Eno’s tape manipulation showcase, “Sombre Reptiles.” And that’s only the first five songs. The rest of the gig is no less audacious, with no less than three Eno songs — including a frenetic “Baby’s on Fire,” “Third Uncle,” and “Miss Shapiro”’s dense, syllable-packed verbal gymnastics. There’s another unlikely cover of the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” while Manzanera turns in another typically gutsy instrumental performance on “Diamond Head.” This album marks probably one of the last times that Eno rocked out in such an unself-consciously fun fashion, but that’s not the only reason to buy it: 801 Live is a cohesive document of an unlikely crew who had fun and took chances. Listeners will never know what else they might have done if their schedules had been less crowded, but this album’s a good reminder. ~ Ralph Heibutzki, Rovi |

88 Elmira St. $13.96 After years of knocking around the Washington, D.C.-area circuit, local guitar legend Danny Gatton finally got to cut his first album for a major label. It was indeed worth the wait, spot-welding blinding speed and immaculate chops that went in a million different directions (jazz, country, rockabilly, blues, you name it) to a musical sensibility that made this all-instrumental album a whole lot more than just yer average fretboard wanking jam-fest. Gatton’s Telecaster really shines on diverse material ranging from Martin Denny’s “Quiet Village” to the roadhouse shuffle “Funky Mama” to the off-the-wall rendition of the theme to The Simpsons. Kudos to Elektra for having the corporate balls to put this out; short, chunky, and middle-aged, Danny Gatton was a bona fide guitar hero for the ’90s, putting the lie to the hard canard that only speedburner metal mega-hair dudes can make the front covers of the guitar mags. ~ Cub Koda, Rovi |

A Curious Feeling $22.98 Tony Banks’ first solo album borrowed faint elements of Genesis’ early progressive sound, making his debut release the strongest in his catalog. Solid keyboard movements lend themselves to mystic, fantasy-like excursions found in tracks such as “From the Undertow,” “Somebody Else’s Dream,” and “The Waters of Lethe,” one of the album’s strongest cuts. Banks manages to capture the wonderment and allure that enveloped Genesis’ Peter Gabriel days in a number of his tracks, yet he filters out the instrumental intricacies, unorthodox time signatures, and complex poetry which enveloped these works to create a milder but equally effective progressive realm, thus generating a fair amount of musical distinction across the album. Banks has refreshingly disposed of any coagulated instrumental pretentiousness that one might have thought would be present, as cuts like “For a While,” “In the Dark,” and the title track verge on a new age sort of keyboard/guitar beguilement. Vocalist Kim Beacon, who has worked with the Walkie Talkies, String Driven Thing, and Thin Lizzy, is quite significant throughout, as is the atmospheric percussion work of Chester Thompson. Later efforts from Banks began to show a drift toward commercial pop, much like Genesis’ material, making A Curious Feeling and, to a lesser extent, 1983’s The Fugitive his most compelling work. ~ Mike DeGagne, Rovi |

A Decade Of Hits 1969-1979 $39.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A Decade of Hits 1969-1979 is a compilation album of The Allman Brothers Band, released in 1991. It is the band’s best-selling album in the U.S., being certified double platinum in 1997. The Allman Brothers Band is an American rock band once based in Macon, Georgia. The band was formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1969 by brothers Duane Allman (slide guitar and lead guitar) and Gregg Allman (vocals, organ, songwriting), who were supported by Dickey Betts (lead guitar, vocals, songwriting), Berry Oakley (bass guitar), Butch Trucks (drums), and Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson (drums). While the band has been called the principal architects of Southern rock, they also incorporate elements of blues, jazz, and country music, and their live shows have jam band-style improvisation and instrumental songs. |

A Heap of Broken Images $16.98 Generally, when a group releases an instrumental and a vocal record simultaneously, it’s the latter that is better appreciated by a larger number of fans. The instrumental selection may get occasional late-night play by a few aspiring DJs, but for the most part it rests untouched inside the case or the sleeve, all but forgotten. However, for production duo Blue Sky Black Death’s debut, A Heap of Broken Images, it is the second disc, the one that features lyrical appearances from Jus Allah, Guru, and Virtuoso, among others, that runs the greater risk of being ignored. Not because it’s a bad collection; it’s just so greatly outshined by the instrumentals. Actually, the term instrumentals is a little deceptive. Kingston and Young God do include spoken vocal samples as well as live singing into their 12-song set, which, added to the guitars, pianos, trumpets, strings, woodwinds, and bass they mix with their drum loops and keyboards, create a fairly stunning effect. It’s lush and harmonious, sprawling through different watery landscapes and ideas, yet there’s a constant undercurrent of pain and isolation that pervades even the less ominous tracks. “Days Are Years” begins with vaguely cacophonous layers that spread out into guitar-led fluvial meanderings, finally ending in a quasi pop song with a “Leaving Las Vegas” bass and repeating vocal line; “Not Here,” with its opening trumpet and piano riff, takes on a darker, more trip-hop feel, and though its jazzy break tries to convince its audience that perhaps there’s a bit of light underneath the murky scum of the pond, as an empty drum loop and forlorn guitar finally bring it to a finish, the realization that the surface is actually very far away suddenly becomes quite clear. It’s depressing, yet the music is so intriguing it’s impossible to stop listenining and to stop looking. Because Blue Sky Black Death prove themselves quite adept at creating descriptive, unique environments on A Heap of Broken Images’ first d… |

A Raining Sun of Light and Love $16.98 Brooklyn-based, semi-instrumental quartet Titan have been unleashing their unholy blend of neo-psychedelic rock and progressive stoner metal on homemade EPs (CD-R basement freakouts) for some time now, so the arrival of a full-length studio album is a cause for celebration. Like Boris, Comets on Fire, and Blue Cheer, Titan don’t concern themselves with genre boundaries. Heavily improvised cacophony can often become the audio equivalent of a traffic jam, but in the right hands it can transcend the endless line of cars and take the listener home by unforeseen paths. A Raining Sun of Light and Love achieves this through the twisted hands and minds of its creators (these guys can actually play), and once you get past the Comus-inspired acoustic intro that’s oddly reminiscent of Ween’s “Squelch the Weasel,” the 45 minutes that follow traverse the annals of rock history like a roller coaster car with a grenade in it. Fat ELP organ runs explode into heavy Sabbath riffing while Rush-inspired time signatures signal the arrival of “Careful with That Axe Eugene”-era Pink Floyd. Feedback washes over Tuvan throat singing, roadside noise morphs into crickets, and bluesy slide guitar and wall upon wall of distortion fall on each of the four tracks like a monsoon, signaling the arrival of one of the most promising metal acts of 2007. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi |

A Space in Time $19.99 A Space in Time was Ten Years After’s best-selling album. This was due primarily to the strength of “I’d Love to Change the World,” the band’s only hit single, and one of the most ubiquitous AM and FM radio cuts of the summer of 1971. TYA’s first album for Columbia, A Space in Time has more of a pop-oriented feel than any of their previous releases had. The individual cuts are shorter, and Alvin Lee displays a broader instrumental palette than before. In fact, six of the disc’s ten songs are built around acoustic guitar riffs. However, there are still a couple of barn-burning jams. The leadoff track, “One of These Days,” is a particularly scorching workout, featuring extended harmonica and guitar solos. After the opener, however, the album settles back into a more relaxed mood than one would have expected from Ten Years After. Many of the cuts make effective use of dynamic shifts, and the guitar solos are generally more understated than on previous outings. The production on A Space in Time is crisp and clean, a sound quite different from the denseness of its predecessors. Though not as consistent as Cricklewood Green, A Space in Time has its share of sparkling moments. ~ Jim Newsom, Rovi |

A Third of a Lifetime $19.98 The first Three Man Army album, despite its confidently trio-based title, actually teamed Paul Gurvitz and Adrian Gurvitz with a number of different drummers, including Buddy Miles, Spooky Tooth’s Mike Kellie, and Vanilla Fudge’s Carmine Appice. Though the Gurvitzes were able at mimicking the cliches of early-’70s hard rock, their material was ordinary to the point of dullness, and their guitar soloing stereotypical almost to the point of unwitting self-parody. A good number of British bands in the Led Zeppelin-Deep Purple spectrum did this kind of stuff better. There were occasional glimmers of something that went outside the genre’s narrowest bounds — a bit of pop harmonizing in “Three Man Army,” acoustic guitar flavorings for “Agent Man” and “See What I Took,” blues-soul organ improvisation in “Midnight,” a strange lyrical grounding for “Butter Queen” (“if your name is Barbara, how come they call you butter queen?” they ask rhetorically). The two best tracks were the least typical — “Together” is much more Beatlesque early-’70s rock with a hippie attitude (and a synthesizer) than it is hard rock, and “A Third of a Lifetime” is a genuinely pretty orchestrated instrumental ballad. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |

African Jazz/Jungle Jazz $17.98 They may have had the word “jazz” in the title, but these two albums, recorded in 1958 (African Jazz) and 1959 (the somewhat slicker and brassier Jungle Jazz) and here combined onto one CD, were cornerstones of the genre that came to be known as exotica. Many of the elements that define the style are on these two instrumental albums, including a sense of cinematic jazz swing; Latin and ersatz tribal rhythms aplenty; easy listening orchestration; echoes of the music of non-North American/European continents in some of the melodies and, for a late-’50s pop recording, exotic instruments employed; a shifting collision and blurring of multiple genres; and a sense of frivolous, irreverent fun. There are even, at points, high trilling vocals and (on “Cairo Bazaar”) almost pre-surf rock electric guitar. It’s true that Les Baxter’s musical references to Africa, Brazil, Cuba, Bali, and jungles and islands the world over might have had more to do with mid-20th century travelog stereotypes of those cultures than the reality of what you’d hear in those places (though he was hardly alone in that regard). Nonetheless, they are key texts in the movement, as they might be called if there’s ever a university course on exotica. And while general popular music scholars would probably not cite them among the prolific, multifaceted Baxter’s top achievements, these are probably the recordings that had more impact within a single genre than any others with which he was involved. [This U.K. CD reissue is filled out with five other tracks recorded between 1951 and 1959, presumably chosen because of their relation to the kind of exotica Baxter developed, though the annotation doesn't give many details about their origins and source releases other than the recording dates and writing credits.] ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |

Ahead Rings Out [Bonus Tracks] $12.98 None of Jethro Tull’s progressive rock tendencies or classical influences followed Mick Abrahams into his creation of Blodwyn Pig, even with the inclusion Jack Lancaster’s sax- and flute-playing prowess. Instead, Abrahams built up a sturdy British blues-rock sound and used Lancaster’s horn work to add some fire to the band’s jazzy repertoire. Ahead Rings Out is a stellar concoction of gritty yet flamboyant blues-rock tunes and open-ended jazz centered around Mick Abrahams’ cool-handed guitar playing, but it’s the nonstop infusion of the other styles that makes the album such a solid listen. After only one album with Jethro Tull, Abrahams left to form this band, and it’s evident that he had a lot of pent-up energy inside him when he recorded each of the album’s tracks. With a barrage of electrifying rhythms and fleeting saxophone and woodwind excursions, cuts like “Sing Me a Song That I Know,” “Up and Coming,” and “Backwash” whip up highly energetic sprees of rock and blues. Most of the tracks have a hearty shot of rock up the middle, but in cuts like “The Change Song” and “Backwash,” the explosive riffs are accompanied by a big band style of enthusiasm, adding even more depth to the material. Andy Pyle’s bass playing is definitely distinct throughout each track and is used for anything but a steady background, while labeling Ron Berg’s drumming as freewheeling and intemperate would be an understatement. It’s apparent that Blodwyn Pig’s style is indeed distinct, releasing a liberated and devil-may-care intensity while still managing to stay on track, but the fact that each cut convokes a different type of instrumental spiritedness is where the album really gains its reputation. Wonderfully busy and even a tad motley in some places, Ahead Rings Out shows off the power and vitality that can be channeled by combining a number of classic styles without sounding pretentious or overly inflated. A year later, Blodwyn Pig recorded Getting to This before Abrahams… |

Ain’t Life Grand $12.99 Widespread Panic’s fourth album features tighter, more song-oriented writing. The searing guitar of the opening tune, “Little Kin,” introduces a grittier album than the previous year’s Everyday. After touring with the first two H.O.R.D.E. tours in 1992 and 1993, the band’s popularity was growing. Their rousing version of Bloodkin’s heartbreak tune “Can’t Get High” earned them radio play. As did their own smoothly melodic “Airplane,” which features lush vocal harmonies. “Blackout Blues” celebrates the hangover with electric guitar screams and a dance-inducing beat, while “Fishwater”’s chaotic percussion intro awakens the soul. The disc also includes two gorgeous instrumental pieces, “L.A.” and the hidden, acoustic guitar track “Waiting for the Wind to Blow the Tree Down in My Backyard.” Ain’t Life Grand increased Widespread Panic’s fan base dramatically and gave them a taste of what continued radio play could mean for the band. ~ Carrie Nieman, Rovi |

Aineen Musta Puhelin (Black Telephone of Matter) $15.99 Best known as one-half of acclaimed techno minimalists Pan Sonic, Mika Vainio also has an impressive r? sum? as a solo artist that stretches back to the early ’90s and his association with influential Finnish imprint S? hk? . Recording primarily under the aliases ? and Philus, and sometimes his birth name (depending on the project), Vainio’s aesthetic mission has been consistently and rigorously defined by an investigation into the materiality of sound. Indeed, just about everything in his catalog evinces a fascination for the physical extremes of frequency range and dynamics, from raw, wrenching bass tones and piercing sine waves to attacking transients and desultory blasts of white noise. Aineen Musta Puhelin (Black Telephone of Matter), Vainio’s fourth album for the Touch label under his name, is similar to past efforts in its ability to wrest dramatic atmospheres from the most errant of sonic gestures. What’s different here, however, is Vainio’s almost complete abandonment of a rhythmic framework to tie those stray elements together. Even as the brittle arctic-industrial grooves of Pan Sonic and ? — reflected in mid-’90s albums like Vakio (1995), Metri (1994), and Olento (1996) — represented the next evolutionary step in techno’s “man-machine” aesthetics, Aineen Musta Puhelin’s ominous electro-acoustic vistas take that idea even further into the realms of the post-human. Largely sticking to a familiar palette of broadband grays and pitch-black silences, along with occasional glints of white-light frequency play, Vainio’s austere approach is loosened a bit on “Swedenborgia” — likely the only track on the album that references an actual instrumental sound. Resembling a musique concr? te-style edit of a doom metal band, Vainio manages to create a remarkably organic, almost improv-like interplay with a few elements (amplified tape saturation, metallic percussion, and a decaying guitar drone) staged through a clever use of basic dynamics processing (volu… |

Airbag/How Am I Driving? $7.99 Once the incredible OK Computer went platinum, proving (at last) to be as impressive to the populace as to the press, Capitol salivated for quick new product, with a new LP two years away. Fortunately for the company that made Sinatra and the Beatles famous, their powerhouse Oxford five had been releasing B-sides in the U.K., on the back of the singles “Paranoid Android,” “Karma Police,” and “No Surprises.” Presto!! Out pops this seven-song mini-LP, basically the LP’s “Airbag” and six B-sides. Mind you, Radiohead are effective judges of their own material. Unlike many U.K. bands, they never serve up a non-LP track so fantastic it should have made the first team. But Airbag is a fine purchase, as their lesser material is still provocative, ambitiously stretching (Thom Yorke and pals take a few chances, such as the spacy instrumental here, “Meeting in the Aisle”), and, as usual, clash several moods together at once. So, if you didn’t buy the expensive English singles, get this. You can’t go wrong with the pile-driving “Palo Alto.” Like the other true standout, “Polyethylene, Pts. 1 & 2,” it deliciously comes off its hinges on a dirty-sounding guitar slash in the chorus (a nerve-racking churn comparable to the Kinks’ smashed-up riff in “You Really Got Me”), triggering a descending, scary guitar trill that oddly echoes the keyboard solo in Frankie “Boom Boom” Cannon’s 1963 number 3 hit “Palisades Park.” Typically traumatic! One loud boo, though, to all concerned, for omitting the fine, gently moving “Lull” (from the “Karma Police” U.K. single). Likewise, where’s the curious, glassy voice-and-piano fragmentary vignette “How I Made My Millions” off the “No Surprises” single? Or the live versions of “Airbag” and “Lucky”? What, there wasn’t room on the CD (snicker)? ~ Jack Rabid, Rovi |

All You Need Is Blood $10.99 The world’s favorite impersonators of Metallica impersonating the Beatles are back with their second release All You Need Is Blood. This time they’ve taken “All You Need Is Love” and replaced the lyrics with metal-themed flair to convert lines like “nothing you can see that can’t be shown” to “nothin’ you can smash that can’t be smashed” in a dead-on James Hetfield imitation. The concept gets heavier, as they encapsulate the Fab Four’s messages of world unity by performing the same song in 13 different versions: English, Portuguese, Estonian, French, German, Hungarian, Hebrew, Italian, Mexican Spanish, Dutch, Polish, Russian, and South Korean. In order to embark on this lofty mission, the band enlisted the help of international Beatallibangers (code for Beatallica fans) to translate the lyrics into their respective languages and then transcribe the song phonetically so lead singer Jaymz Lennfield would be able to pronounce them accurately. From there, Lennfield and studio engineer Flemball Rasmartin faced the unruly task of trying to fit these rough translations, that were often much longer than the originals, into the spacing of the chord progressions. Also, to clever it up a bit, different instrumental bits were created for each track to replace the French National Anthem that introduced the original version, guitar lines were changed from take to take, and differing snippets of random chatter (babbling something about bloodstained sheets) were pasted on the endings. ~ Jason Lymangrover, Rovi |

Amen Corner $16.98 Railroad Earth made its name on the jam band circuit with their hard to classify amalgamation of bluegrass, folk, Celtic, country, jazz, and rock, although the band itself says they’re acoustic rockers. There’s no denying that they rock hard, but on Amen Corner they sound most like a country band with a bluegrass accent. Todd Sheaffer the band’s lead singer and main songwriter has a pleasant country/folk/singer/songwriter voice and a knack for crafting subtle melodies that give the rest of the band — Tim Carbone, fiddle, John Skehan, mandolin, Andy Goessling, guitar, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, penny whistle, and sax, Carey Harmon, drums and percussion, and standup bass man Johnny Grubb — plenty of room to stretch out. Skehan’s mandolin and Carbone’s fiddle play a beautiful harmonic hook to open “The Forecast,” a tune that talks about a coming storm but Skehan’s mandolin sprinkles that track with flurries of shimmering, sunshiney notes. “All Alone” sounds a bit like the Band with a slow, mournful backbeat, lonesome banjo, and Sheaffer’s keening vocal. It sounds like a prayer offered by a man with no hope of being answered by friend, lover or god. Goessling’s dobro adds slow wailing notes to complement the music’s bluesy, hopeless vibe. “You Never Know” sounds like the last song of the night at a dusty honky tonk full of lonely men. It has a sad singalong chorus and the playing remains understated until Carbone’s fiddle and Sheaffer’s wordless yodel drive it home with a jaunty, if desperate coda. “Been Down This Road Before” has a nice bouncy bluegrass feel to counter its melancholy melody with a lyric of lost love staggering through the drunken shadows of the early morning hours. “Right in Tune” is an ode to true love that doesn’t ignore the bumps in the highway, but celebrates the feeling you get when the sun is bright and everything’s in tune. Goessling’s dobro and Carbone’s fiddle lift your spirits with their breezy instrumental flights. The alb… |
