Meadowbrook Musical Arts Center – Gilford, NH 08.25.06 $12.95 Gov’t MuleMeadowbrook Musical Arts Center Gilford, NH 08.25.06 Hammer And Nails. A title apropos for the show opener as it built the framework for a set that is to performance as the Taj Mahal is to architecture. Slackjaw Jezebel, brilliantly played last night, was somehow stepped up a notch tonight as was Many Rivers To Cross. 32/20 Blues is the epitome of down’n'dirty guitar blues and was played fatter, dirtier and nastier than a wallowing hog. Lay Your Burden Down was a towering display of talent and soul. Mr. High & Mighty and Endless Parade rounded out the rest of the set and stepped aside for Blind Man In The Dark to close the set and leave all in attendance mesmerized and cheering for more. Bergen Performing Arts Center Englewood, NJ 07.23.08 $12.95 Gov’t Mule Bergen Performing Arts Center Englewood, NJ 07.23.08 After two restful and well deserved days off, the traveling circus that is Gov’t Mule landed at the Bergen Performing Arts Center and delivered a top shelf show. With Slackjaw Jezebel as the opener, this gig got off to a full tilt boogie with I Think You Know What I Mean in the second slot. Danny fired up Enpty Pages and the band teased the crowd with a She’s So Heavy tease tacked on the end of Monkey Hill. Mid set rocked with Time To Confess and No Need To Suffer, but the last three were a real treat. At the opening of The Letter, Jimmy Vivino was seen behind the Hammond with Danny, but he then took his normal position with guitar slung around his neck for the the set closers Don’t Let It Bring You Down and a brilliant Masters Of War-> Rockin’ In The Free World. With a wicked set one in the bag, set two had quite a lot to live up to. Unring The Bell instantly showed that the band had stepped it up and would not rest on their laurels. Bad Little Doggie was dominating and Far Away was beautiful and haunting, but Thirty Days In The Hole picked the pace up again and rolled fright in to Drums. Warren’s guitar work on New World Blues was dazzling and the combo of Banks Of The Deep End and Mule-> Who Do You Love?-> Mule to end the set left all breathless. Jimmy Vivino returned with the band to deliver It’s My Own Fault and I Can’t Hold Out as the double barrelled encore. ART COMING 7/29/09! What’s the difference between FLAC and MP3? Click here to check it out. We recommend reading up on the file formats before making your purchase. If you don’t see the tracklisting listed below here, click on the image on the above left. |

01011001 $19.98 With Ayreon, Dutch multi-instrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen has built a career around massive prog metal opuses with hordes of guest vocalists. Basically, anybody in metal who can hold a tune has sung for Ayreon at some point. 01011001 features Anneke Van Giersbergen (ex-the Gathering), Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Floor Jansen (After Forever), Tom Englund (Evergrey), Hansi K? rsch (Blind Guardian), Simone Simons (Epica), Ty Tabor (King’s X), and Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation), among many others. These singers are the focal points of their bands, but in Ayreon, they’re merely characters in Lucassen’s rock operas. 01011001 is a sprawling two-disc set that one critic called “the longest CD ever made.” Indeed, the album spans 100 minutes, and feels like 100 years. It’s a perfect fit for the Inside/Out label — pristine production, byzantine songs that feel like full albums, hi-tech synths that wish they were guitars. Lucassen really, really likes his synths; in “Waking Dreams,” he entirely forgoes bass in favor of a percolating ostinato that suggests a beefier Kraftwerk. Electronics also pervade the percussion; “Beneath the Waves” is as if Alan Parsons covered the Beastie Boys’ “So What’cha Want.” Ray gun synths, operatic vocals, fake and real strings, and even Celtic melodies adorn this sonic mansion. Its ambition would be laughable if the record didn’t actually fulfill it often. Admittedly, such fulfillment was purchased at Guitar Center (or its Dutch equivalent); the record is most touching when it strips down to acoustic guitar on the gorgeously compact “Web of Lies.” These two discs, subtitled Planet Y and Earth, are about humanity’s disconnect with itself and destruction of the planet. But that’s really not important. Music this over the top almost defies criticism. Reviewing it is like reviewing the world’s tallest building. It doesn’t care; it just goes on and on. ~ Cosmo Lee, Rovi |

12 Crass Songs $15.98 While in the minds of many punk rock was supposed to be about upending the rules and assumptions that had come to govern rock & roll in the mid-’70s, punk also helped revive the ranting spirit that had informed the best political music and art through the 20th century, from the Situationalists to the Fugs. Among the first wave of British punks, none ranted with greater ferocity and sense of purpose than Crass, who actually were the anarchist firebrands the Sex Pistols pretended to be, though the brutal report of their music was rarely as impressive or as intelligent as their lyrics. Crass were massively influential during their 1977-1984 lifespan and beyond, both as musicians and as activists, and Jeffrey Lewis’ 12 Crass Songs is a surprising example of just how far their ideas have reached. Best known for his witty anti-folk tunes, musician and cartoonist Lewis first heard Crass while he was a college freshman in 1993, and the blunt wit and angry idealism of their songs made a powerful impression on him. As he began performing, Lewis began looking for ways to merge the fury of Crass’ broadsides with his acoustic-based music and he recorded some lo-fi interpretations of some of their tunes in his bedroom. A few years later, Lewis’ efforts have grown into 12 Crass Songs, in which Lewis and a handful of friends (most notably vocalist Helen Schreiner) have taken a dozen tunes by Crass and married them to arrangements that give them a far more melodic spin than they revealed in their original form. While electric guitars pop up here and there (and take center stage on “Big A, Little A”), most of 12 Crass Songs is dominated by acoustic guitar and Lewis’ sweet, slightly nasal vocals, but while he has succeeded in making these songs sound pretty and playful in a way they never were before, he’s also managed to carry forth their message with a surprising accuracy. It was often difficult to understand what Crass were bellowing about on The Feeding of the 5000 or Station… |

1958 Les Paul Plain Top Electric Guitar (Faded Tobacco) $3999 Objects of distinction are seldom recognized immediately, and this was certainly the case when Gibson introduced the newly renamed Les Paul Standard in July of 1958. Having already made several modifications to the base Les Paul Model guitar over the previous two years the Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece being the most notable changes the new Les Paul Standard introduced in 1958 hoped to correct Gibsons waning sales of solid body electric guitars, which had been on the decline ever since 1953 when the company shipped 2,245 instruments.BodyFor the 1958 Standard Plaintop, Gibson decided to arrange the maple top in two bookmatched pieces glued together at the center seam, giving each guitar its very own distinct look and marking the beginning of the guitar worlds fascination with figured maple tops, even though the majority of the tops used in 1958 were considered plain when compared to the tops used one year later and beyond.FinishLegendary Gibson president Ted McCarty and his staff partly blamed the guitars Goldtop finish as the main culprit for the sales slump and decided to forego the finish in favor of new, brighter finish dubbed Cherry Sunburst, which allowed the natural beauty of the maple top to be showcased something that had previously been concealed by the Goldtop finish.Additionally, Cherry Sunburst was the only color other than Gold that was used to finish the new Les Paul Standards in 1958, even though clear differences in the color of vintage examples would suggest otherwise. These variations were due mainly to the inconsistency of the red pigment used by Gibson to paint the sunburst finish, a problem that wasnt corrected until the early 1960s and which caused many of the guitars to fade to some degree of amber, honey or yellow hue. This problem inadvertently led to the creation of many of the finishes used today on numerous Gibson guitars, including Honey Burst, Tobacco Burst, Light Burst, Iced Tea Burst, Lemon Burst, Vintage Sun Burst and, |

Just five years earlier the ES-335s semi-hollow body design was a remarkable innovation and became the perfect guitar for players seeking the gorgeous, round, mellow tones associated with hollow bodies – ideal for jazz and blues – complimented by the edge and sustain of a full-blooded solid body. 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 2 $9.99 Maureen Tucker once said that one of her greatest regrets about her tenure in the Velvet Underground is that the band didn’t record their shows, and while the live tapes that do survive of the group’s performances document an extraordinary band, sadly there aren’t very many of them. 1969: Velvet Underground Live, a two-record set released in 1974, is the best and most compelling (legally released) document of the band’s powers in concert, but given its length (over 104 minutes), when Mercury Records reissued the set on CD in 1988, they opted to send it out as two separate single-disc albums, rather than as a two-disc set. The three long songs that open 1969: Velvet Underground Live, Vol. 2 (they were the whole of side three on the vinyl release) capture the Velvets at their most hypnotically beautiful, easing from the slow but dramatic ebb and flow of “Ocean,” through the lovely melancholy of “Pale Blue Eyes,” into the slow, unbearable build to manic frenzy of “Heroin.” The disc’s second half finds the band in more conventional but no less satisfying form, shifting back and forth between mid-tempo numbers like “Over You” and “Some Kinda Love” and charging rockers such as “White Light/White Heat” (a fine version of “I Can’t Stand It” has been added for the CD issue). While Lou Reed’s passionate vocals and guitar work are front and center throughout, the rest of the band is in equally superb form, especially Sterling Morrison, still the finest foil Reed ever had on guitar, and Maureen Tucker, whose subtle, highly musical drumming is at once minimal and superbly intelligent. If you care at all about the Velvet Underground, both volumes of 1969: Velvet Undergound Live belong in your collection, but Vol. 2 is the one to get if you want to know how much more this band could do than create bracing noise. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

1984 $35.99 At the time of its release, much of the fuss surrounding 1984 involved Van Halen’s adoption of synthesizers on this, their sixth album — a hoopla that was a bit of a red herring since the band had been layering in synths since their third album, Women and Children First. Those synths were either buried beneath guitars or used as texture, even on instrumentals where they were the main instrument, but here they were pushed to the forefront on “Jump,” the album’s first single and one of the chief reasons this became a blockbuster, crossing over to pop audiences Van Halen had flirted with before but had never quite won over. Of course, the mere addition of a synth wasn’t enough to rope in fair-weather fans — they needed pop hooks and pop songs, which 1984 had, most gloriously on the exuberant, timeless “Jump.” There, the synths played a circular riff that wouldn’t have sounded as overpowering on guitar, but the band didn’t dispense with their signature monolithic, pulsating rock. Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony grounded the song, keeping it from floating to pop, and David Lee Roth simply exploded with boundless energy, making this seem rock & roll no matter how close it got to pop. And “Jump” was about as close as 1984 got to pop, as the other seven songs — with the exception of “I’ll Wait,” which rides along on a synth riff as chilly as “Jump” is warm — are heavy rock, capturing the same fiery band that’s been performing with a brutal intensity since Women and Children First. But where those albums placed an emphasis on the band’s attack, this places an emphasis on the songs, and they’re uniformly terrific, the best set of original tunes Van Halen ever had. Surely, the anthems “Panama” and “Hot for Teacher” grab center stage — how could they not, when the former is the band’s signature sound elevated to performance art, with the latter being as lean and giddy, their one anthem that could be credibly covered by garage rockers? — but “Top Jimmy… |

2011 Oasis Contemporary Jazz Awards $12.99 The 11 tracks by ten artists that make up this album of music associated with the Oasis Contemporary Jazz Awards held in San Diego in 2011 would constitute a good hour on contemporary jazz radio, with station identification and commercials added. There are the usual covers of old pop hits, in this case Wayman Tisdale’s version of McFadden & Whitehead’s “Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now” and Steve Cole of the Guess Who’s “Undun.” There are a couple of vocal numbers with Jonathan Butler’s “Feels So Good” and Tisdale’s (again) “Sunshine.” And there are plenty of tunes in which a rhythm track supports an easygoing solo on a guitar or horn for four or five minutes before fading out. The exceptional tracks are the slightly left-of-center ones. L.A. Chillharmonic (a name that deserves an award in itself) presents “Checkin’ You Out,” which uses several different solo instruments. And, with the best saved for last, Kevin Eubanks’ seven-and-half-minute “Adoration” is a lovely duet between acoustic guitar and electric piano. That track might have been categorized as new age, and disc jockeys may be tempted to talk over it, but at least it demonstrates that the “contemporary jazz” category can hold more than one kind of music. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi |

8 Diagrams $14.99 With anticipation so high it caused debate not only among fans but among the group itself, Wu-Tang Clan’s fifth studio record, 8 Diagrams, found itself at the center of attention as 2007 wound down. First there was the announcement of the successful obtainment of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” sample (which was later corrected to “interpolation,” as it was actually played by Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante with help from George Harrison’s son, a Wu enthusiast himself, Dhani). Then Raekwon did a highly publicized online interview in which he accused the RZA of taking a dictatorial stance regarding the shape of the album, calling him a “hip-hop hippie” who was moving the Clan in the wrong direction. Then Ghostface Killah followed suit, also protesting the timing of the release (it had been set for December 4, the same day The Big Doe Rehab was to come out, but was pushed back a week). Finally, RZA responded, diplomatically, thoughtfully, respecting the opinions of the dissenting MCs but standing by his own work. There’s reason for his confidence. Nothing RZA does is haphazard, and 8 Diagrams is clearly something he’s put a lot of thought and energy into. It’s beautifully, impeccably produced, from the soundtrack strings and horns of “Rushing Elephants” and “Unpredictable” to the philosophical samples and guitars that are interspersed throughout — it’s a mood record more than anything else, with no clear-cut single or fan favorites, the kind of thing that deepens and grows with every listen. Suffice it to say, it’s probably not the album anyone would predict from the group after a six-year break, but it is truly RZA’s crowning achievement, the result of both his years with the Wu and in Hollywood, intricate, dark, reflective, and gorgeous. These same qualities, however, can be used to support the less-than-enthusiastic response from Raekwon and Ghostface and fans of the early hard-hitting Wu-Tang of 36 Chambers (which, ironically — o… |

9 $18.98 Norwegian avant-garde quartet Supersilent lost drummer Jarle Vespestad at the end of 2008, and rather than replace him (their music having never been particularly rhythm-driven), they opted to continue on as a trio. However, in so doing they all abandoned their own musical comfort zones to one degree or another. 9 was recorded over the course of three days at Henie Onstad arts center, outside Oslo, and finds each of the three remaining members — Arve Henriksen, best-known as a trumpeter; Helge Sten (electronics, keyboards, guitar); and keyboardist St? le Storl? kken — playing Hammond organ and nothing else. This could be a recipe for ultimate tedium, but it’s not. These guys stray far away from the Jimmy Smith/Larry Young school of Hammond playing, and instead head into a subterranean cave network of near-ambient interplay reminiscent of classic, early Tangerine Dream titles like Zeit and Atem. The disc’s four minimally titled tracks (“9.1″ through “9.4″) offer lots of oozing and throbbing, with just a few hints of melody here and there. Highly recommended even to Supersilent newcomers. ~ Phil Freeman, Rovi |

Action-Refraction $16.98 Bassist Ben Allison’s latest album is a collection of covers, or interpretations, of others’ songs; only one is a jazz standard (Thelonious Monk’s “Jackie-Ing”), and that’s barely recognizable as such. The rock-oriented band, which includes saxophonist/bass clarinetist Michael Blake, guitarist Steve Cardenas (and a second guitarist, Brandon Seabrook, on two tracks), keyboardist Jason Lindner, and drummer Rudy Royston, churns through PJ Harvey’s “Missed,” Donny Hathaway’s “Some Day We’ll All Be Free,” Neil Young’s “Philadelphia,” and Paul Williams’ “We’ve Only Just Begun,” along with classical composer Samuel Barber’s “St Ita’s Vision” and one Allison original, the album-closing “Broken.” The sound, frequently led by Cardenas with Allison providing a rocksteady throb beneath, is somewhere in the neighborhood of rock; “Missed” sounds like Tom Waits’ incorporation of rhumba on 1985’s Rain Dogs, while the Hathaway tune becomes a repetitive vamp with Lindner’s keyboards providing swooping noises and atmospheric static. “Philadelphia” strips the band down to guitar, bass and gently brushed drums, sounding like a Bill Frisell project in the process. “St. Ita’s Vision” brings the keyboards front and center, going for a spacy prog rock vibe reminiscent of early-’70s Tangerine Dream or some Krautrock outfit. “We’ve Only Just Begun” is the closest thing here to true jazz, with melodic extrapolations rather than repetition, rhythmic fluidity, etc. Blake even launches a tenor solo that goes pretty out, with plenty of squeaks and squawks to strip the song of any lingering associations with the Carpenters. “Broken” is another atmospheric slow burner, Lindner’s keyboard sounds reminiscent of Autechre at times. Action-Refraction isn’t a straight jazz album, but it’s more likely to appeal to young jazz listeners than to indie rock fans, though it offers pleasures for anyone with open ears. ~ Phil Freeman, Rovi |

Activity Center $15.98 Where on their last album, 2005? s Fosbury, Tahiti 80 slicked up and focused their sound considerably and made a beautifully shiny modern dance-pop album, on 2009? s Activity Center you can hear right away that the band has shifted directions. ? 24 x 7 Boy? comes charging out of the gate sporting garage rock chord changes, crunchy guitars, and an exciting energy that is both surprising and welcome. Indeed, much of the album has a loose and fun feel that? s inspired by mid-’60s rock and pop, dominated by short, snappy tunes, and brightened up by the frequent use of parping organs, sunshiney vocal harmonies, and tambourines. That? s not to say that the group has made a slavishly obvious ? Sixties? throwback album. There are still plenty of modern textures and sounds everywhere, and there? s a sparse cleanliness to the group? s playing and arrangements that would have them thrown out of any garage. It? s the combination of eras, styles, and sounds, as well as the evocative nature of the song structures, Xavier Boyer? s sweetly heartfelt vocals, and energetic restraint the band utilizes that make the album work. It also helps that Boyer and the group have written their strongest batch of songs yet. There is no filler to speak of, and just about every song would sound great coming out of a jukebox. Or car speakers? or anywhere. The track list plays out like a classic rock check list that touches on doo wop (the lilting “Fire Escape”), laid-back country rock ( “Dream On”), funky horn section rock (“Come Around”), soft rock (“Tune In”), and a lot of catchy, Strokes-y guitar rock. The end result is a complete departure from Fosbury, and the rest of their previous output, too, but it? s a move that will please fans of very poppy, hook-filled tunes played with style, economy, and plenty of energy., Rovi |

An Airplane Carried Me to Bed $27.98 Adam Young? s boyish vocals make him sound like a baby Ben Gibbard, and if Owl City is his Postal Service, then Sky Sailing is his Death Cab for Cutie. Young wrote and recorded An Airplane Carried Me to Bed? s songs in 2006, while he was still spending his days as a metalworker and living with his parents, and about a year before he crafted the sound that eventually resulted in the hit single ? Fireflies.? Instead of Owl City? s bright, bleepy synth-pop backed by faint acoustic strumming, this album puts the guitar front and center, with keyboards occasionally coming along for the ride. The sound is different enough from the Owl City songs to warrant the Sky Sailing name, but Young? s basic approach remains the same not just from project to project, but from song to song. His voice and melodies are sweeter than sweet, and his muse remains love, whether it? s new, lost, unrequited or far, far away. Owl City? s winsomeness twinkles in songs like ? Brielle? and ? Steady As She Goes,? although their acoustic backdrops might sound a touch simpler and more genuine than the electronics of Young? s main project. Most of An Airplane Carried Me to Bed drifts by in a blur of wispy guitars and yearning sighs, with mentions of Audrey Hepburn and ? wintergreen daydreams? popping out now and then. There aren? t many peaks and valleys here, although ? Tennis Elbow? shows hints of Owl City, ? Take Me Somewhere Nice? blossoms from playful electric pianos to accordions on its choruses, and ? A Little Opera Goes a Long Way? shows off Young? s guitar solo skills. Young has a distinct vision for his music no matter what name he releases it under, and Owl City fans will find a lot to like about Sky Sailing. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi |

Guitar cabs: The f5 can be placed within 1-2 inches of the grill cover at a 90 angle pointing directly into the speaker. If the mic is placed closer to the edge of the speaker, you will minimize the higher frequencies and get a warmer, fatter tone. To capture more highs, |

Babysoul $9.12 With his ARTizen Music Group debut Babysoul, 26-year-old Jackiem Joyner is the latest saxophonist in contemporary jazz history to musically chronicle the experience of emerging from the ranks of extraordinarily busy sideman to center stage on his first recording. An instantly engaging, soulful release, Babysoul will astound listeners with its musicality and accessibility. After several years of playing with keyboard greats Marcus Johnson and Bobby Lyle and saxophonist Jaared, co-headlining a 30 city tour in 2004 with Ronnie Laws and jazz and soul singers Angela Bofill and Jean Carne, and opening gigs for everyone from India Arie to Boney James, Spyro Gyra and George Benson, Joyner took a full year off to focus on writing and recording an album that marks his status as a baby coming into the world, a new soul emerging into the music business. Babysoul is more than just a title- it is a true description of his professional re-birthing. Jackiem’s insistent and seemingly limitless invention on the thumpin , finger snapping title track is all about the urgency of getting out there and showing everyone what he s got. Thinking back on dealing with difficult characters on the business side of things along the way, Elevation finds Jackiem in a retrospective place ruminating upon his life so far in the music business while the tune’s ebullient character suggests an inner resolution and dedication to move only onward and upward. The dreamy, ambient closer Innocence strips away the obstacles and gives him a fresh, optimistic mindset towards the future. Considering that this past New Year s Eve, he held his own jamming onstage during the Jazz Spectacular at the Hyatt Regency in La Jolla, California with genre greats Gerald Albright, Richard Elliot, Jeff Golub and Peter White whose graceful acoustic guitar graces Babysoul s sensual, soprano driven first single Stay With Me Tonight it s clearly a gift that comes naturally to Joyner. For this record, I m really tryi |

For veteran guitar heroes, the game is also compatible with previously available Guitar Hero content, with updates that allow players to perform any instrument part and take advantage of new Band Hero features with many of the earlier downloadable songs from the Guitar Hero: World Tour edition of the game. Also building upon the series’ World Tour release, the high-def console editions of Band Hero include a fully featured “GHTM Studio,” allowing players to remix with new samples, patterns, and playing styles. The console disc edition of Band Hero offers more than 65 popular songs. Black Label Society Albums $9.16 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Shot to Hell, Skullage, 1919 Eternal, Kings of Damnation 98-04, Hangover Music Vol. Vi, Mafia, the Blessed Hellride, Alcohol Fueled Brewtality, No More Tears, Stronger Than Death. Excerpt: Shot to Hell is the seventh studio album by Black Label Society. It was released September 12, 2006 and was the band’s only record to have been released by Roadrunner Records. The cover art was originally the three nuns holding shotguns (as seen in the ads handed out at Ozzfest 2006), but the artwork was deemed inappropriate and was changed to three nuns playing a game of pool. The band’s signature skull, featured on their logo, can be seen on the 8 ball on the table. “I never run out of ideas,” Zakk says. “We just came in here and started knocking it out. That’s how you make records.” That take-no-prisoners attitude is all over such snarling tracks as “Concrete Jungle”, “Blood Is Thicker Than Water” and “Give Yourself To Me”, while reflective ballads like “Lead Me To Your Door” and “Sick Of It All” mix moody melodies with screaming guitar solos. “It’s a real cool mix of heavy shit and mellow shit,” Zakk explains. During the recording of “Shot To Hell”, Zakk and crew turned Ameraycan Studios in North Hollywood, CA into a cross between a Guitar Center and a teenage boy’s bedroom. “We had a Mellotron in here, a Hammond B-3, a ton of Marshalls and just about every guitar I own,” Zakk recalls. “It looked like ‘Sanford and Son’ out in the parking lot a whole garage-sale going on with the equipment, you know? And we had pictures taped up on the walls of Randy Rhoads and Jimmy Page, just for inspiration, because you’ve still gotta listen to music with a fourteen-year-old’s ears. Bugera 6260 120W 2 Channel Valve Amplifier Head $1087.99 Our goal with the 6260 head and 6260-212 combo was the tone of a high power super lead amp, with all the virile crunch it takes to detonate the center stage. With 6L6s this design has a very open and glassy tone; with EL34s, it takes on a more compressed and noticeably midrange character. With the master up and using the Clean gain knob for volume, you get pristine, yet fat clean power. Turning the Clean gain up gradually causes the amp to react like a non-master volume amp, and achieves a very natural sounding overdrive — what we call “Texas Clean”.Turning the master and gain up together causes the amp to react like a non-master volume amp.Turning Clean channel gain up achieves a very natural sounding overdrive. The amp will react sharply to changes in volume or attack from the instrument. The Crunch setting is simply the clean channel with more gain from another 12AX7 to create the Rock’n’Roll rhythm sound heard on all your classic rock faves. The Bright switch helps darker sounding instruments cut through and really shines when using a hollow or semi-hollow body guitar. The Lead channel is all about articulate gain and sustain. Copious amounts of harmonics and compression help solos stand out and cut thru the band with ease.Separate master volumes allow for easy rhythm-clean/solo-lead switching with total control over the level of each sound. |

Known locally as “The Deuce”, it is a popular watering hole. Formerly known as “The Brown Jug”, which was opened by Bill Brown there on the corner of Miller and Montford. Prohibition caused its closure in 1921. It reopened in 1933 with the same name, but became the 2 A.M. Club in about 1940.The famous “toilet seat” guitar created by Charlie Deal still hangs behind the bar. Charlie holds the patent for this original idea and transformed numerous donated, oak seats into decent musical instruments. He claimed the idea came to him while he was sitting on one! Charlie was a frequent visitor at the deuce and is sorely missed for his encyclopedic knowledge of Bay Area rock. The night before Thanksgiving is commonly known by locals as “Black Wednesday”, when hordes of Tamalpais High School alums descend upon the bar to reconnect during the Thanksgiving holiday.2 AM Club is also a band currently residing in NYC. |

CS-336 $3399 History Ever since 1958, when Gibson introduced the first semi-hollowbody electric guitar, the timeless ES-335, the companys engineers have been fine-tuning the concept of combining the classic look of a hollowbody with the performance of a solidbody. Debuting in 2001, the CS-336 is the ultimate result of that quest and it is a true Gibson Custom Shop beauty.BodyThe CS-336 delivers the classic look of the 335 with its elegantly tapered figured-top but the Custom Shops engineers have enhanced the CS-336s playability. Although the CS-336 has the same body lines as the ES-335, the model is scaled down to provide solidbody style comfort. And its neck has the slim, "fast" profile of vintage 60s Gibson guitars. To create truly great resonating properties, the back and sides of the CS-336 are a single piece of mahogany that is shaped inside and out like a classic Gibson archtop, but with a solid center beam running the length of the body from the neck tenon to the tail block. The models solid, two-piece maple top is also carved inside and out to the shape and thickness of ES-series archtops, but it, too, has a solid center section that matches up to the center beam of the body. And before each CS-336 leaves the Custom Shop it is checked and adjusted by one of Gibsons state-of-the-art Pleck machines, ensuring the ultimate ready-to-play set-up.Near-perfect Recreation The overall body size is an ultra-comfortable 13-inches wide, 16 inches long, and 1 11/16th-inches deep. The CS-336 has two Gibson 57 Classic humbucking pickups along with the historic Gibson two tone pot, two volume pot, one three-way selector switch control configuration and an ABR-1 bridge. The hardware is nickel, and the bodys top and back have a stylish single-ply binding classic touches, although the Gibson CS-336 is sonically and ergonomically state of the art. Another factor in the CS-336s gorgeous sustain is its one-piece mahogany neck supporting a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearloid d |

Chicago II [Bonus Tracks] $34.98 Chicago Transit Authority recorded this double-barrel follow-up to their eponymously titled 1969 debut effort. The contents of Chicago II (1970) underscore the solid foundation of complex jazz changes with heavy electric rock & roll on the first set. The septet also continued their ability to blend the seemingly divergent musical styles into some of the best and most effective pop music of the era. One thing that had changed was the band’s name, which was shortened to simply Chicago to avoid any potential litigious situations from the city of Chicago’s transportation department — who claimed the name as proprietary property. Musically, James Pankow (trombone) was about to further cross-pollinate the band’s sound with the multi-faceted six-song “Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon.” The classically inspired suite also garnered two of their most beloved hits — the upbeat pop opener “Make Me Smile” as well as the achingly poignant “Colour My World” — both of which remained at the center of the group’s live sets. Chicago had certainly not abandoned their active pursuit of blending high-octane electric rockers such as “25 or 6 to 4″ to the progressive jazz inflections heard in the breezy syncopation of “The Road.” Adding further depth of field is the darker “Poem for the People” as well as the politically charged five-song set subtitled “It Better End Soon.” These selections feature the combo driving home their formidable musicality and uncanny ability to coalesce styles telepathically and at a moment’s notice. The contributions of Terry Kath (guitar/vocals) stand out, as he unleashes some of his most pungent and sinuous leads, contrasting the tight brass and woodwind trio of Lee Loughnane (trumpet/vocals), Walter Parazaider (woodwinds/vocals), and the afore mentioned Pankow. Peter Cetera (bass/vocals) also marks his songwriting debut — on the final cut of the suite as well as the album — with “Where Do We Go From Here.” It bookends both, with at the v… |

Christ Illusion $15.99 The reunion of the original Slayer lineup appears for the first time in the studio since 1990’s Seasons in the Abyss (a record that topped off one of the great four-album stands in metal history: Hell Awaits, Reign in Blood, and South of Heaven preceded it). Drummer Dave Lombardo’s retaking of the drum chair places the band back on the edge, pushing themselves and the genre to look back at where they’ve been and where they go from here. For a band that has been together as long as Slayer has, they have never made concessions and have stubbornly refused to sound like anyone but themselves. Christ Illusion is a raging, forward-thinking heavy metal melding with hardcore thrash; this is what made them such a breath of fresh air in the first place. And while they no longer sound terrifying, that was never their point anyway. Slayer rips through these ten songs, complete with lightning changes, off-kilter rhythms, and riff invention, together with plodding crescendos, sick-as-hell guitar breaks, and dark, unrelentingly twisted-as-f*ck lyrics that reflect a singular intensity. The big themes on Christ Illusion center on the perverse myth of religion and its responsibility for, and cause of, war. One can talk about the power big-money has at stake in the Middle Eastern havoc, but the root, according to some of these songs, is the culture war between two competing myths, Christianity and Islam, that this time out could result in the apocalypse. On the opener, “Flesh Storm,” Tom Araya roars the refrain above the guitars and frantic drumming: “It’s all just psychotic devotion/Manipulated with no discretion/Relentless/Warfare knows no compassion/Thrives with no evolution/Unstable minds exacerbate/Unrest in peace…only the fallen have won/Because the fallen can’t run/My vision’s not obscure/For war there is no cure/So here the only law/Is men killing men/For someone else’s cause.” Elsewhere, such as “Eyes of the Insane,” the story comes in the first person from the poi… |

City of Evil $17.98 Avenged Sevenfold’s first two albums had a clear influence from heavy metal, but the California combo also freely incorporated emo, screamo, and post-hardcore elements. The mixing and matching meant 2003’s Waking the Fallen had as many sighing harmonies as it did harmonized guitar freakouts. And yet City of Evil, the band’s third record and Warner debut, is absolutely rife with the imagery and pacing of classic metal. Look at that artwork. It features a skeletal swordsman flying a steed with steaming nostrils over the urban inferno of the title; tattoos, demons, and a skull with flapping wings adorn the lyric book. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal influence is immediate and prevalent, from the maniacally rippling percussion throughout to the triumphantly whining lead guitars in the chorus of “Blinded in Chains,” or the soaring melody in “Burn It Down” that meets its match in Metallica-styled verses. The downshifts into guttural roars are largely gone, replaced by better-integrated atmospheric stretches or the tighter songcraft of a track like “Bat Country,” which intersects punk and pop influences in a manner similar to My Chemical Romance. At over seven minutes, “Wicked End” is a late-album standout. Vocalist M. Shadows rips through couplets like “We’ve grown in numbers, six hundred sixty-six/War breaks, a sign of the end, eternally expelled/Look to the sky for knowledge, the stars align tonight,” guitarists Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance trade off blistering solos, and there’s a full choral interlude in the center, complete with an angelic host and sighing cellos. Which is all totally metal, and refreshingly unmarred by attempts to fit too many jumbled genres in. City of Evil’s ballads are a little trite, and even its double-bass raging doesn’t necessarily break new ground. But Avenged Sevenfold gets all the pieces right, and sound like they’re having more fun here than in the scattershot approach of the first couple records. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi |

Clocks and Full Stops $31.98 As the unofficial poster girl for perseverance, Welsh-Italian singer/songwriter Marli Harwood has had to deal with more false starts than an athletics track referee, with the release dates of every single one of her five previous albums canceled before they could make it onto the shelves. She finally makes it out of the starting blocks 16 years after embarking on a pop career with her official debut, Clocks and Full Stops, released through the label she originally started out with, Island Records. Apart from the obligatory attempt at Lily Allen-esque ska-pop (“If Love Makes Sense”), its 12 tracks could have been recorded at any period during her numerous difficult setbacks, at times recalling the MOR soft rock of Talk on Corners-era the Corrs (“Fall in Love with Me”), the mainstream country of Shania Twain (“Queen of Fantasy Land”), and the kooky guitar pop of Alisha’s Attic (“Billy”). But as pleasant as the gentle Dixie Chicks-ish ballad “Clock with No Hands” and the twinkling music boxes and angelic harmonies of “The Break Up Song” are, there’s very little here to suggest that her sixth-place finish in 2002’s Fame Academy was a grave injustice. Indeed, not only does the production appear firmly stuck in the late ’90s, but the Cosmo-friendly lyrics, which largely center around heartbreak and the inadequacies of men, don’t seem to have moved on from the kind of scribblings you’d find in a teenager’s diary (“Yesterday we were fighting over scrambled eggs”). And while its simplistic nature sometimes has its charms, it also occasionally appears a little cloying, as on her whistled-led sugary-pop cover version of Henry Priestman’s “It’s Called a Heart”; “The Recipe,” which sounds like an outtake from a below-average Disney musical; and the Eurovision-style singalong of “Planet Pop.” No one can begrudge Harwood’s well-deserved and long-awaited shot at the big time, but Clocks and Full Stops would perhaps have struck a bigger chord had it not been s… |

Cosita Buena $25.98 Orishas, a trio of Cuban expatriates living in Europe, continue to refine their Latin fusion style on Cosita Buena, their fourth album of all-new material. The group began as a Latin rap quartet, releasing its groundbreaking album debut, A Lo Cubano, in 2000, a couple years before reggaeton would begin charting a more or less similar course, fusing tropical rhythms with urban beats and raps. What made A Lo Cubano so groundbreaking at the time of its release was not only its socially conscious world-view, giving voice to a group of thoughtful Afro-Cubans who had left the confines of Cuban society behind in favor of Europe and its cultural openness, but also its fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms and melodies with hip-hop. The problem for some fans of A Lo Cubano, of which there are legion, is that Orishas departed ever further from the Latin rap style of that debut album with each subsequent full-length effort. The socially conscious world-view remained firmly in place, thankfully, as did the group’s Afro-Cuban roots. However, as Orishas refined their musical fusion with each subsequent album — drawing from a wider range of musical styles, and adding more instrumentation and singing to their songs — their propensity for fusion began to supplant their identity as a Latin rap group. That’s certainly the case on Cosita Buena, an album on which the raps of Ruzzo and Yotuel, once front and center, seem increasingly secondary. Front and center on Cosita Buena are Rold? n, whose melodic singing and choruses are the driving force behind most of the songs, as well as the musical productions, which are wonderfully dynamic, featuring everything from hip-hop beats, turntable scratching, horn blasts, fat basslines, and tight rhythms to additional layers of strings and guitar. Moreover, the productions vary from song to song, giving each a different feel; take for instance the standout songs “Cosita Buena,” “Bruja,” “Camina,” “Machete,” and “Hip Hop Conga,” each markedly … |

Excerpt: The CarnavalitoThe Carnavalito (English : Little Carnival ) is a traditional South American dance from the Altiplano and Puna regions that is practiced in relation to religious festivities. The current form of the dance is an expression of syncretism between indigenous and Spanish colonial culture. The Carnavalito was danced in the Americas long before the Spanish Arrived. Today it is still danced in Perú , in the eastern region of Bolivia , in the Northwest zone of Argentina and in Northern Chile . In Argentina it is danced in North of Jujuy , and in center Salta . The music is characterized by the use of instruments such as the quena and the bombo , it’s origin comes from the Huayno , music similar to the Carnavalito.Classification Belongs to the group of the collective great dances. It’s a cheerful dance, it must be done with cheerfulness and innocence, as everybody playing happily.Choreography It is a dance set, dancing in groups or with multiple partners who perform choreographed steps to the beat of the music. The dancers move around the musicians in a row. A woman or a man with a handkerchief (or pennant decorated with ribbons) on the hand is responsible for directing. They all sing the same verse or improvisations.See also (online edition) References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The Chacarera is a dance of Argentinean origin. It is a genre of folk music that, for many Argentines , serves as a rural counterpart to the cosmopolitan imagery of the Tango . A dance form played by contemporary musicians as soloists or in small ensembles of voice, guitar, violin and bombo drum, the Chacarera is often legitimized by a discourse espousing its “origin” in the remote province of Santiago del Estero . Dennis Coffey $14.98 Too rarely, some small justice gets meted out in the music biz; in the 21st century, legendary Detroit guitarist and Motown Funk Brother Dennis Coffey is getting some. Hip-hop and electronic music fans have long sought his seminal recordings for Sussex and his voluminous session dates. His appearance in the 2002 film Standin’ in the Shadows of Motown, his autobiography Guitars, Bars and Motown Superstars, and three different late-2000s compilations re-upped his profile. Dennis Coffey, the guitarist’s debut for Strut, places his guitar front and center in a multi-generational group of musicians from Detroit and elsewhere. Coffey lays his trademark psychedelic soul wah-wah-and-fuzz guitar to 11 tracks. Some new; others being new versions of legendary jams he played on. The set opens with ultra-funky instrumental orgy “7th Galaxy” (with ex-Big Chief guitarist Phil Durr and Motor City session gods Rayse Biggs and David McMurray on horns, and a rhythm section of session masters bassist Tony ? T-Money? Green, drummer Nate Winn, and percussionists Larry Fratangelo and Dennis Sheridan). Other instrumentals include the moody groover “Space Traveler” (with Deadstring Brothers’ Jim Simonson on bass and Eric Hoegemeyer on drums), the big horn and guitar burner “Miss Millie” (with Milwaukee’s Kings Go Forth), and the wah-wah bass and percussion blowout “Knockabout.” These tracks are on a par with Coffey’s legendary “Scorpio” and his Black Belt Jones soundtrack. The vocal tracks are no less spectacular. There is the Parliaments’ “All Your Goodies Are Gone,” with soulster Mayer Hawthorne, and Funkadelic’s “I Bet You,” featuring the Detroit Cobras’ Rachel Nagy and the Dirtbombs’ Mick Collins. Fanny Franklin of Orgone lends her voice to a sultry cover of Wilson Pickett’s slow-burning “Don’t Knock My Love.” Rodriguez’s venomous “Only Good for Conversation” features Paolo Nutini in a knockout performance, and the Bell Rays’ Lisa Kekaula offers a boiling, raw … |

Dick’s Picks, Vol. 1: Tampa, FL 12/19/1973 $22.99 Named after the Grateful Dead’s vigilant vault keeper Dick Latvala, the Dick’s Picks series ultimately encompassed three dozen entries spanning 23 years (1968 — 1991) of live concert recordings. Inside the debut installment are over two hours of highlights from the band’s final 1973 gig (December 19) at the Curtis Hixon Convention Center in Tampa, FL. With a surfeit of options to inaugurate the ongoing project, Latvala cited his desire to disseminate items that were “lesser known” by Deadheads and to reveal the sonic splendor of the opener “Here Comes Sunshine” when asked the reasons that he chose this specific date to christen Dick’s Picks. It was clear that the entire evening could not be presented on two CDs. Therefore, Latvala — with input from a variety of sources, notably bandmember Phil Lesh (more about that in a moment) — selected representatives from the first and second sets. Deadhead purists were initially displeased that the concert had been condensed and/or resequenced. Meaning, they wanted every note. In addition to the sublime “Here Comes Sunshine,” a potent “Weather Report Suite” and “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” are worthy of investigation. The former for its incisive instrumental explorations, while the latter is notable for the conspicuous absence of the typical “Upon the Rio Grande-O/Upon that lazy river” refrain. The late 1973 lineup of the Grateful Dead is minus contributions from Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals) — whose final trimester of pregnancy was not conducive to life on the road. A further point of contention between connoisseurs of the music was the out and out hatchet job done to “Playing in the Band” at the behest of Phil Lesh (bass/vocals). A caveat of including the performance was the removal of his bass solo. The centerpiece of disc two is 50 minutes of vintage, uninterrupted and nonstop musical interaction from participants Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals), Keith Godchaux (keyboards), Bill Kreutzmann (percu… |

Feeding the Wheel $17.98 On Feeding the Wheel, Jordan Rudess has modernized the keyboard sounds pioneers like E. Power Biggs, Rick Wakeman, Gary Wright, Alan Hovhaness, and Keith Emerson broke ground with. The latter-day third ivory player in Dream Theater takes Gary Wright’s Dream Weaver a step or two into the twilight zone. “Headspace” is a nice moody piece, kind of like Edgar Froese outside of Kraftwerk with more activity in the mix. “Quantum Soup” features Steve Morse of the Dregs on guitar solo with Terry Bozzio of Missing Persons playing percussion, the first of eight numbers the ex-Zappa drummer provides the bottom for. Track two has its own evolution, from jazz/progressive rock to a bassy funk eight minutes into the tune, with the 11 minutes of “Quantum Soup” melting nicely into the six minutes of “Shifting Sands.” The spaced notations in the CD booklet are vaguely familiar, that aforementioned Dream Weaver concept a simplified version of this. “We all feed wheels that carry our hopes and dreams to another day” is the sentiment written by Rudess, and those thoughts are unleashed in music which will appeal to fans of Dream Theater and ELP and those who feel Steely Dan is too mainstream. “Revolving Door” could be the theme to Hawaii Five-O turned upside down; strange vocals invade for a few moments on this otherwise instrumental enterprise. The title track can be a bit much except for the staunchest fans of progressive rock, over seven minutes of the piano runs Jordan Rudess learned at Juilliard embellished with high-end production and superb drums. For those who thought Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s “The Nutrocker” wasn’t energetic enough, explore this disc. “Dreaming in Titanium” is like some prelude to music by Prince, while “Center of the Sphere” is part of the artist’s quest, the “search for the ultimate sound” that Rudess speaks of. Bobby Hebb has stated that he has found the lost chord, now he’s trying to figure out what to do with it. Feeding the Wheel is def… |

Firebird V Electric Guitar $1699 There is no mistaking a Firebird Vwith its unique "reversed" zig-zag body design and equally distinct headstock, it is simply one of the most recognizable of all guitar profiles. First introduced in 1963, the Gibson Firebird was the brainchild of legendary automotive designer and visionary Ray Dietrich (Lincoln, Packard), enlisted by Gibson to bolster the guitar lines of the early '60s and help solidify the company's eminent rank among solidbody electric guitar manufacturers. Dietrich's unconventional design was based loosely on both the legendary automobile tailfins of the 1950s and the Gibson Explorer, which had been introduced several years earlier.Neck-Through-Body Construction and Solid Mahogany BodyThe Firebird V's multiple-wood-ply construction is as structurally and aesthetically innovative as any Gibson feature. The neck and center piece of the body are constructed from solid mahogany, as are the two wings that are glued on to each side to form the Firebird's distinct outline. Gluing all the pieces together insures maximum 'wood-to-wood' contact, and allows the neck and body to function as a single unit. This neck-through-body construction results in better tone and unsurpassed sustain, and no loose or misaligned necks. The Firebird V Neck ProfileThe neck on Gibson's Firebird V has the best of both worldsit is a hybrid between the '50s rounded contour and the '60s slim-taper profile. As with all Gibson necks, it is machined in Gibson's rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. Once the fingerboard gets glued on, the restincluding the final sandingis done by hand. Gibson High-Output, Ceramic Mini Humbuckersoday, it is best known as the pickup in the Gibson Firebird, and is a vintage replica of the original mini humbucker with bar Alnico II magnets. The Gibson mini humbucker is authentic in every detail, from its cream-colored plastic mounting and coated enamel wire, to its maple s |
